A numerical study on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with photonic crystals with one-dimensional periodicity has been carried out using the Finite Volume method. The photonic crystals with one-dimensional periodicity consists of 7 alternating layers of and with thicknesses of and, respectively. Electromagnetic field components have been simulated to propagate through the photonic crystal structure, experiencing reflection and transmission at each layer of the structure. The simulation results show the occurrence of absorption precisely at the Bragg frequency by the photonic crystal, which is referred to as the photonic band gap (PBG). A comparison of the simulation results has been conducted using different fluxes, such as the Lax-Friedrichs and upwind schemes, under PBG conditions. The results show smoother absorption using the Lax-Friedrichs scheme. Additionally, the use of a single-layer graphene on the front side of the photonic crystal has shown more perfect absorption compared to without the single-layer graphene. Therefore, the integrated graphene-photonic crystal system can be used as a perfect reflector. The simulation runs well using effective absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) to reduce wave reflections at the edges of the computational window. Based on the simulation results, the Finite Volume method has been proven to be a powerful tool in describing electromagnetic wave propagation through photonic crystal systems with or without graphene. These findings provide a foundational model for fabrication approaches and holds potential for future advancements in sensor technologies, moreover two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. Fine-tuning AI models for enhanced consistency and precision in chemistry educational assessments

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into educational assessments represents a paradigm shift, especially in STEM subjects such as chemistry, which require complex problem-solving and written feedback. This study focuses on the effects of fine-tuning on each of the four AI models—Gemini 1.5, Gemini 1.0, BERT, and XLNet—and their performance on chemistry tasks. The models were implemented using three evaluation methods: Seq2Seq for Sodium Reaction Grading, a Regression Task for Overall Grading, and Attention-Based Grading for Key Steps Grading. The fine-tuning process significantly improved the models' accuracy, precision, and stability. Gemini 1.5 outperformed the other models across all three metrics, with accuracy increasing from 80 % to 89.5 % and TPR from 0.73 to 0.93, whereas Gemini 1.0 achieved TPR gains from 0.69 to 0.89. BERT and XLNet, which had substantially lower baselines, also showed significant improvements, particularly in identifying fundamental steps in the evaluation. These advances highlight the critical role of fine-tuning in refining AI model output to align with expert grading standards, ensuring accuracy and reliability in assessment. The results confirm that fine-tuning is essential in preparing AI models for teaching applications, particularly for complex tasks such as chemistry evaluation, thus enabling scalable solutions. The findings of this study provide further justification for the wider adoption of fine-tuned AI models to improve the reliability, scalability, and effectiveness of grading systems in STEM education. © 2025

Diabetes mellitus (DM) poses a significant global health and economic challenge. Effective diabetes management requires a multifaceted approach that combines clinical and community-based interventions. Community-based interventions are critical to address the growing burden of diabetes. Despite numerous independent studies on community-based interventions for T2DM management and mathematical models, there has been no comprehensive review integrating these two domains. This systematic literature review aimed to fill this gap by examining mathematical modelling in the context of community-based interventions for T2DM management. Following the PRISMA guidelines, relevant articles were identified, screened, and assessed for eligibility using the Scopus, scienceDirect, and PubMed databases. The inclusion criterion was English-language research articles published between 2014 and 2024 that focused on T2DM interventions using mathematical models. Seven articles met the final inclusion criteria and were analysed to answer research questions related to the geographical origin of the data, nature of the intervention, specific mathematical model used, and the main findings of the primary study. This review highlights that mathematical models are critical for optimising community-based interventions, by identifying key risk factors, predicting disease progression, and evaluating the effectiveness of various treatments. By synthesising findings from different geographical and economic contexts, this review highlights the importance of culturally and contextually relevant strategies for diabetes management. The integration of robust mathematical models with community-based approaches promises to develop more effective evidence-based strategies for diabetes management, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Conventional dialysate recycling methods struggle to effectively remove creatinine, urea, and other minor contaminants. This study explores mixed matrix membrane adsorbers (MMMAs) as a novel approach to address these challenges. MMMAs, which integrate adsorbents into filtration membranes, function as both filters and impurity scavengers. Zeolite carbon composite (ZCC) and zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) were incorporated into MMMAs using the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. Characterization by SEM and XRD confirmed the successful synthesis of ZCC and ZTC, retaining the zeolite-Y structure and amorphous nature, with notable differences in particle sizes (680 and 379 nm) and crystallite sizes (0.45 and 0.02 nm). FTIR revealed hydrogen bonding interactions between ZCC and PVP, absent in ZTC. SEM and AFM analyses of the membranes indicated increased hydrophilicity and porosity with ZCC, while ZTC reduced surface roughness. MMMAs significantly outperformed pristine membranes in removing urea and creatinine. The PPK-0.2 membrane achieved superior rejection rates (93.05 % for urea and 98.95 % for creatinine), attributed to microporous entrapment of ZTC and polymer matrix adsorption. In contrast, PPZ-0.2 showed lower rejection rates (84.24 % for urea and 85.79 % for creatinine), relying solely on physical adsorption. These findings highlight MMMAs, especially ZTC-based ones, as promising candidates for enhancing dialysate reuse efficiency. © 2024 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry

Background: Propolis from Sulawesi's stingless bees (Tetragonula biroi) contains antioxidants, more flavonoids than propolis from Apis bees, and the antibacterial ability. Objective: to examine the antibacterial properties of Propolis Nanoemulsion Extract (PNE), which is extracted from the Celebes Stingless Bee (T. biroi), in relation to the periodontopathogen bacteria such as Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), and Provotella intermedia (Pi). This investigation also examines PNE's phytochemistry, particle size analysis (PSA), and zeta potential. Methods: The maceration process with 96 % ethanol was used to create PNE from Celebes stingless bee (T. biroi), which was then subjected to zeta potential measurement and PSA. Phytochemical analysis was used to identify phytochemical constituents in the PNE (T. biroi). Diffusion zone, minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were used to assess antibacterial efficacy against Aa, Pg, Pi, and Fn. Furthermore, the statistical analysis was used to extract the data. Results: Phenols, alkaloids, and flavonoids were identified;however, triterpenoids and saponins were not. Between 151.28 and 182.2 diameter nanometers (***) was the range of the PNE's diameter. At 1.56 % propolis (T. biroi) concentration, the MIC, MBC, and diffusion zone analysis performed better than at 0.76 %, with a significant difference (p:0.01;p < 0.05) to Aa, Pg, Pi, and Fn. Conclusions: The highest antibacterial activity against Aa, Pg, Pi, and Fn as periodontopathogen bacteria is demonstrated by alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenols in PNE from Celebes (T. biroi) at a concentration of 1.56 %. © 2025 The Authors

Biomarkers of heavy metals pollution in mangrove ecosystems: Comparative assessment in industrial impact and conservation zones

Heavy metal contamination from industrial activities in coastal regions can lead to pollution in mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves produce antioxidant compounds to mitigate the impact of free radicals. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cu and antioxidant activity in Avicennia alba and Excoecaria agallocha mangroves from areas affected by industrial activities and conservation areas, Banyuasin, South Sumatra, Indonesia. This study was conducted in September 2023 with sampling locations in the Payung Island area and the Barong River conservation area, Berbak Sembilang National Park. The samples taken included sediment and mangrove leaves. The concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cu was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. Antioxidant activity test using the DPPH test, total phenol using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and phytochemical profile screening using GCMS. Statistical analysis of the correlation between antioxidant activity and heavy metal concentration using the Pearson correlation. The results showed that the highest concentration of heavy metals in sediment and mangrove leaves was found in the area affected by industrial activity, with a range of Pb values of 0.67 ± 0.16–18.70 ± 0.48 mg/kg and Cu values of 3.39 ± 0.20–6.07 ± 0.37 mg / kg. The results of sediment pollution assessment for heavy metals Pb and Cu at Igeo < 0 indicates uncontaminated, 1 < Cf < 3 indicates low contamination, and PLI 0–2 indicates not polluted. While the results of heavy metal bioaccumulation in leaves were BCF < 1, indicates low bioaccumulation. E. agallocha leaves from the Pulau Payung area showed very strong antioxidant activity of 21.63 μg/ml, and the highest total phenol content reached 398.80 mg GAE/g. Analysis of compounds with the highest antioxidant activity identified the presence of esters, aldehydes, alcohols, fatty acids, glycosides, flavonoids, terpenoids, and steroids. We propose a new statistical modeling method to analyze functional relationship between predictor variables and correlated response variables, and apply it for modeling the number of HIV and AIDS cases influenced by early-age marriages and contraceptive users. The proposed method is LS-Spline BNNBR that is a Biresponse Nonparametric Negative Binomial Regression (BNNBR) based on least squares spline (LS-Spline). To validate the proposed method, we compare it with classical method, namely Ordinary Least Square Biresponse Parametric Negative Binomial Regression (OLS-BPNBR). The results show that the LS-Spline BNNBR method provided deviance value of 7.542334 which is smaller than that of OLS-BPNBR method, namely 7.993935. Thus, the proposed method has better prediction fit than the classical method. • This study discusses new statistical modeling method for the number of HIV and AIDS cases influenced by early-age marriages and contraceptive users where the response variables are correlated with each other. • The model estimation results show that the number of HIV and AIDS cases in Indonesia will decrease if the early-age marriages percentage increases and the contraceptive users percentage decreases. • The results are useful to provide a scientific basis for making policies to control the number of HIV and AIDS cases in Indonesia. © 2025 The Authors

Design of Dual Space Inquiry framework for facilitating flexible learning in digital technology era

Mixed learning that offers flexibility is a current requirement. However, the challenge lies in ensuring that these approaches effectively accommodate interactive and practical elements, especially in physics education. This research aims to design a conceptual framework of the Dual Space Inquiry for facilitating flexible learning in basic physics course. An educational design research (EDR) approach was used to develop and validate the Dual Space Inquiry framework comprising three phases: analysis and exploration;design and construction;and evaluation and reflection. This research involved 253 students and 20 experts and practitioners. The findings highlighted the urgency of implementing a mixed learning framework that combines face-to-face and online learning methods in physics education contexts to optimize learning outcomes. These results became the basis for the design of the Dual Space Inquiry Framework which emphasizes flexibility, humanism, and student-centered. Furthermore, the results of expert and practitioner judgment showed that the framework's validity is in the high category (v-values=0.770). Based on the results, it is concluded that an approach that combines online and offline learning with inquiry activities integration in a balanced manner is recommended for optimal learning outcomes for physics education. The Dual Space Inquiry Framework, with its high validity, is a valuable framework for lecturers in physics and other science fields to enhance learning quality and adapt to the digital technology era. © 2024 The Author(s)

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) represents a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, contributing substantially to morbidity and mortality rates. We propose a new method for modeling CHD risk by considering the influencing factors, namely age, fatty food consumption and anxiety using Penalized Spline Nonparametric Logistic Regression (PSNLR) approach to analyze the CHD and non-CHD risks affected by these influencing factors. The proposed method gave results a percentage of model classification accuracy of 94.31 % and the value of area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.96. This means that the proposed method is a powerful method in modeling the CHD risk and it can effectively identify the nonlinear relationship between influencing factors and CHD incidence. This research supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 3, especially the target of reducing deaths from non-communicable diseases such as CHD through improving disease prevention and treatment. The use of more accurate models in identifying risk factors also contributes to efforts to improve overall public health and strengthen health care systems. • A cross-sectional survey on influencing factors of CHD risk was conducted at the Airlangga University Hospital. • For analyzing relationship between influencing factors and CHD risk, we used PSNLR method. © 2025

This study was conducted specifically to GIS mapping based on Nonparametric-Geographically Weighted Spline Regression (NGWSR) Estimation Model for the factors that affect the open unemployment rate (OUR) in Kalimantan. Observational data in this study were categorized into 56 regions based on the Regency/City scale in Kalimantan. The variables used in this study consisted of the open unemployment rate, the labor force participation rate, population density, human development index, expected years of schooling, and regional minimum wage. This study utilized the spatial analysis of the NGWSR model with the geographic weighting of the Gaussian and Bisquare kernel functions. The NGWSR model was considered capable of providing a solution to the geographically weighted spatial regression for the unknown regression curve. Regarding to the result of this study, NGWSR with geographic weighting of the Bisquare kernel function was considered as the best model. The model criteria were based on the coefficient of determination and RMSE. The results of the significance test of model parameters for 56 Regencies/Cities data in Kalimantan had succeeded in mapping the area into 14 categories based on the significant variables of each region. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing.
