In this study, the dynamics and control aspects of a spherical rolling robot's lateral motion are investigated. An approximate, simplified to a single plane, mathematical model is derived using Lagrange equations to check stability of the system. Utilizing the fusion of sensor data, a precise orientation measurement is achieved. Document focuses on a synthesis of a PID controller reducing sideway oscillations that occur in motion of a spherical robot with internal pendulum mechanism.

This work presents an algorithm for automated real-time ramp detection using 3D point cloud data in the context of shared-control powered wheelchairs. Limitations in the interfaces available to those with severe motor impairments can make basic maneuvering tasks with powered wheelchairs difficult. Although a significant amount of work has been done on obstacle detection and avoidance, much less attention has been given to algorithms for the safe and reliable detection of ramps and inclines;even though navigating these structures is an important part of urban life. We provide an algorithmic solution for accurately detecting traversable inclines for applications with powered wheelchairs using the Point Cloud Library (PCL) within the Robotics Operating System (ROS) framework. All algorithms are implemented first in simulation and later evaluated on data obtained from indoor and outdoor urban environments. We measure the performance of our algorithm with systematic testing on several different ramp structures, observed from varied viewpoints. Results show that our algorithm is successful in detecting the orientation, slope, and width of traversable ramps with up to 100% accuracy and an average detection accuracy of 88%.

We have carried out experimental and numerical analyses for reconstruction of permittivity distribution using a pair of long distance small size electrodes and additional arc electrodes. A reconstruction method for permittivity distribution that uses a genetic algorithm and numerical analysis (finite element method) based on measured capacitance has been proposed and investigated. However, the conventional method had a problem in accuracy. In this paper, the reconstruction method has been improved by using a Parameter-free Genetic Algorithm(PfGA) based on measured capacitance and electric potential. In addition, we have evaluated the fitness function with PfGA. © 2016 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

The barcode technology has undergone many dramatic changes during the past few years. This is due to the increased need for encoding more data into the barcode. One of the latest developments in the barcode technology is color barcode, developed by Microsoft's High Capacity Color Barcode (HCCB). With four or eight colors, color barcodes are now used extensively in certain areas such as airports, print advertising and mobile phones compared to the 2D black and white barcodes such as Quick Response (QR) code and data matrix. This paper provides an overview of six papers related to color barcode and later introduces an algorithm developed to encode data using binarization and grouping of bits to form a color barcode and also to decode data from color barcode.

This paper presents an LQR-based output-feedback integral control design for voltage regulation of a buck DC-DC converter in continuous-conduction mode (CCM). The averaged state-space model is first transformed to normal form, with the new states being the output and its derivative. A state-feedback LQR design is then designed, following which the derivative term in the control design is approximated using a high-gain observer (HGO). Even without an integrator, i.e., PD control, the voltage error can be practically stabilized, while asymptotic stability is achieved with integral (i.e. PID) control. The design is experimentally verified using the Power Pole board designed by Hirel Systems and the University of Minessota configured as a buck converter, the dSPACE DS1104 board used for the control implementation. The controller's performance is compared against a traditional PID design (based on desired gain-crossover frequency and phase-margin) that is implemented in analog hardware. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed control method results in satisfactory voltage regulation performance under widely varying input voltage variations and load changes.

In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

In this paper, a worm drive actuator (WDA) is proposed and design considerations for the development of its experimental prototype is presented. The WDA is basically a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). It consists of multiple stator-worm and a centrally positioned wheel. As the name suggests, in both mechanism and structure it mimics the mechanical worm drive gear. However, while the worm gear has threads wound on its worm and wheel, those of the WDA contain appropriately shaped, radially magnetized permanent magnets (PMs). This project is an extension of a linear actuator based on the magnetic screw concept. The authors hope for adoption of this technology in mechatronics applications, namely robots and industrial machines, where direct-drivable actuators that can support complex joints, in addition to providing multiple degrees of freedom (DOF) are desirable. Three-dimensional (3-D) finite element analyses (FEA) computed for the linear version of this device show a high force density capacity of up to 6 MN/m 3 . Estimates show that torque capable of being delivered to the wheel by a single stator-worm could be up to 10 N.m.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

The optimization of transient stability of grid transmission system is the strongest and the weakest point of power transmission grid. Considering the protection of transmission system, relay operation adjustment is discussed for the emergency situation of cascade failure, island operation of power generating unit and load shedding of connected load with independently operating power generating units. Cascade condition of power transmission grid and auxiliary power supply for the startup of tripped generators by independently operating generators and non-conventional power generators by organizing favorable transmission grid configuration and economic and social impact of blackout condition is discussed.

Spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that results in loss of functions, causes muscle, joint and bone deficits, moreover it increases the muscle tone level. FEScycling is an alternative rehabilitation process to conserve the musculoskeletal system affected by the injury in the functional state. The aim of this study is to get the legs bilaterally synchronized by FES and compare MMG signal responses. The preliminary protocol consists of five consecutive contractions. The first and the last contractions were discarded and the three intermediate contractions were analyzed. A ratio between MMG values of muscle responses during propulsion and return of pedalling phases was calculated for each cycle and each leg. The applied FES profile consisted of pulse and burst on time of 250 us and 5 ms and frequencies of 1000 Hz and 20 Hz, respectively. Results showed that greater MMG RMS values tend to occur during the propulsion phase than in the return phase. MMG Z axis of RLL and MMG X axis of LLL were the axes that presented the greatest ratios. The MMG RMS signal showed that greater values tend to occur during the propulsion phase than in the return phase of the same thigh.
