Measurement of capacitance and electrical potential of plural points for estimation of permittivity distribution

Recently, a method for estimating permittivity distributions was reported. The method combined a numerical technique (Finite Element Method) with Genetic Algorithm (GA). However, methods for estimating the distribution of permittivity have not yet been established. The purpose of this study is to obtain experimental data in order to improve the estimation method. We measured capacitance and electrical potential of plural points when an acrylic rod is placed in various positions within a measurement system. © 2013 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper presents a neural networks based traffic light controller for urban traffic road intersection called EOM-MNN Controller (Environment Observation Method based on Multiple Neural Networks Controller). Traffic congestion leads to problems like delays and higher fuel consumption. Consequently, alleviating congested situation is not only good to economy but also to environment. The problem of traffic light control is very challenging. Traditional mathematical methods have some limitations when they are applied in traffic control. Thus, modern artificial intelligent ways have gained more and more attentions. In this work, EOM is a very interesting mathematical method for determining traffic lights timing that was developed by Ejzenberg [4]. However, this method has some implications in which multiple neural networks were proposed to improve such problems. The solution was compared with the conventional method through scenario of simulation in microscopic traffic simulation software.

This paper presents the model predictive control of Hilare-type robot on a slippery 3D terrain having known ground conditions, while avoiding wheel slip. The controller is developed based on the dynamic model of the Hilare-type robot on a 3D terrain. So, the terrain's gradient appears in the dynamic model, and is fedback in real-time for more precise trajectory tracking. Nonlinear model predictive control incorporates constraints such as maximum affordable longitudinal and lateral wheels static friction, to avoid slip and control input saturation. The Hilare-type robot is simulated while moving on a slippery hill with known static friction. The simulation exhibits accurate trajectory tracking of the autonomous mobile robot on a slippery 3D terrain having known surface conditions, while eliminating wheel slip.

Building maps of unknown environments is a critical factor for autonomous navigation and homing, and this problem is especially challenging in large-scale environments. Recently, sensor fusion systems such as combinations of cameras and laser sensors have become popular in the effort to ensure a general level of performance in this task. In this paper, we present a new homing method in a large-scale environment using a laser-camera fusion system. Instead of fusing data to form a single map builder, we adaptively select sensor data to handle environments which contain ambiguity. For autonomous homing, we propose a new mapping strategy for building a hybrid map and a return strategy for selecting the next target waypoints efficiently. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm enables the autonomous homing of a robot in a large-scale indoor environments in real time.

In this study, we focused on the interoperability and authentication of medical devices in the context of telemedical systems. A recent standard called the ISO/IEEE 11073 Personal Health Device (X73-PHD) Standards addresses the device interoperability problem by defining common protocols for agent (medical device) and manager (appliance) interface. The X73-PHD standard however has not addressed security and authentication of medical devices which is important in establishing integrity of a telemedical system. We have designed and implemented a security policy within the X73-PHD standards. The policy will enable device authentication using Asymmetric-Key Cryptography and the RSA algorithm as the digital signature scheme. We used two approaches for performing the digital signatures: direct software implementation and use of embedded security modules (ESM). The two approaches were evaluated and compared in terms of execution time and memory requirement. For the standard 2048-bit RSA, ESM calculates digital signatures only 12% of the total time for the direct implementation. Moreover, analysis shows that ESM offers more security advantage such as secure storage of keys compared to using direct implementation. Interoperability with other systems was verified by testing the system with LNI Healthlink, a manager software that implements the X73-PHD standard. Lastly, security analysis was done and the system's response to common attacks on authentication systems was analyzed and several measures were implemented to protect the system against them.

This work presents the performance of the wellknown program ATP-Alternative Transient program applied to the simulation of continuous windings of transformer under the incidence of a voltage surge. The motivation for this analysis lies in the fact that once ATP is widely applied for circuit simulation in several conditions, it is expected that it can also be applicable to this problem that is of significant importance for transformer designer. If so, thanks to wide ATP availability designers will have available an easy and user friendly tool for helping in their designs. Basis of analysis is in new experimental data obtained by the authors as well as some other data presented in previously published paper, in which experimental data have also validated applicability of the TLM- Transmission Line Modeling Method for the same problem, known as a classical one for concerns of voltage insulation for transformer designers.

In the fall of 2009, a college of engineering and applied science at a public, Rocky Mountain region university embarked on a new inclusive excellence initiative called Broadening Opportunity through Leadership & Diversity (BOLD). The BOLD Center is a new K-16 organizational structure to increase the performance, representation and retention through graduation of students who are underrepresented in engineering, including women, students of color, low income and first generation college attendees. A BOLD Center focus of concern is the declining retention rate of women that has dipped below that of men recently in our College. A survey consisting of 41 questions was distributed to all undergraduate engineering women in the college that incorporates scales from the Assessing Women in engineering (AWE) assessment and from the Academic Pathways of People Learning engineering Survey (APPLES). Five research questions were posed in the survey design: • Do women express a loss of interest during their program? • Is there a chilly climate for women in the college? • Do women?s self-efficacy levels change during the program? • Do academic performance levels play a role in women?s retention in engineering? • Do women have an adequate support structure in the college? The survey generated 116 responses from 2 solicitations, with women students represented from every major across all four undergraduate years. An unintended outcome was that the sample largely consists of women with high grade point averages. Thus, this paper offers insight on top performing women?s self-efficacy and their views on the college climate, the benefits from various support systems - advising, mentoring, social and financial - and the existing programming and initiatives that can play a role in their achievements. The results indicate that women students are interested and efficacious with respect to obtaining an engineering degree, and that the college climate is, on average, warm and accepting. Howev

We propose a new method for obtaining narrow-band electrocardiographic potential (ECG) and respiratory variation in infants through their underwear. This method is based on capacitive coupling involving the electrode, the underwear, and the skin. In order to detect ECG signal and respiratory variation individually, a differential separation filter is introduced. The filter divides an input signal into a high frequency component for narrow-band ECG detection and a low frequency component for respiratory variation detection. To evaluate the proposed method, a pilot measuring device was made and tested. As the results, we confirmed the following: (1) Respiratory variation signal obtained with our device was highly correlated (r = 0.995) with that measured simultaneously with a commercial pneumotachograph. (2) Our pilot device succeeded in measuring narrow-band ECGand respiratory variation respectively in 13 of 15 and 11 of 15 measurements of infant aging 53 to 187 days. (3) R-R interval extracted from the narrow-band ECG was 25 times more precise than that calculated from photoplethysmogram. (4) Heart rate variability extracted from the narrow-band ECG was 100 times more precise than that calculated from photoplethysmogram. These results reveal that the proposed method appears promising for application to bedding of infants and neonate as a non-invasive and awareness-free approach for ECG and respiratory variation monitoring during sleep.

Visualization of construction progress helps construction project managers to study spatial aspects of as-built and as-planned performances, identify progress discrepancies, better utilize resources and equipments in different locations and make timely corrective decisions. This needs as-built performance model to be generated and superimposed over as-planned allowing progress discrepancies to be visualized. In this paper we discuss methodology of generating, analyzing and visualizing progress with D4AR (4 Dimensional Augmented Reality) models using daily construction photographs and 4D as-planned model. We use three construction cases to illustrate how the as-built progress models could be sparsely reconstructed using daily site photographs and how the reconstructed model is superimposed over the as-planned model. We also demonstrate how the D4AR model is applied in these ongoing construction projects. As a result of this research, automatic and more frequent visual progress data collection, analysis and reporting will become possible. Copyright ASCE 2009.

Several researches have tried to provide a means to analyze the second heart sound (S2) in an attempt to understand the functional mechanisms in its genesis and for diagnosis purposes. In this work we tested Time-Frequency Representation (TFR) for simulated S2 selecting and applying classical and modern TFRs such as the Spectrogram, the Wigner-Ville Distribution, the Time Varying Autoregressive (TVAR) model, the Scalogram, and the Hilbert-Huang Spectrum (HHS) by Empirical Mode Decomposition. Two performance measures are proposed, the first one based on local 2D correlations (ρ) between the ideal and the estimated TFRs images, while the second one based on time moments of the TFR images to provide the normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE). Under no noise conditions, the TFRs by HHS and the TVAR modeling, by the Burg algorithm, resulted in a ρ average of 0.788 and 0.812, and NRMSE of 0.172 and 0.195, respectively. Therefore, based on the lowest NRMSE, HHS was considered the TFR with the best performance. Afterward, HHS was applied to real S2 acquired at the aortic and pulmonary focal points.
