The successful development of cassava industry will provide economic benefits and create job opportunities for the community. Promoting cassava food products will provide more options for alternative food for society and thereby, it is expected that food diversity will promote food security. Based on the urgency, this research aims to examine the financial feasibility of cassava farming and cassava-based food manufacturers. The results show that business units are financially feasible. However, there were some opportunities to generate more profit for small farmers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Some business units that successfully diversify the output earned more profit margin. The research suggests that livelihood diversity through value addition strategy needs to be taken into account. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Food security is a condition in which food is available to every individual at any time, both physically and economically. In line with the Sustainable Development Goals, the Indonesian government has made efforts to improve food security, especially rice as main staple food. This study aims to know the form of purchased rice of household in urban and rural areas and to examine the relationship between household residences on decisions about where to purchase rice in a sustainable development era. This study uses micro data of 1047 households, consists of 486 urban households and 561 rural households. The data was collected through web survey in August 2020, then it was analysed by using descriptive method. The results showed that households in urban and rural Indonesia had quite different decisions in purchasing rice. The rice purchasing in modern places, such as supermarkets and minimarkets, is mostly carried out by urban households. Meanwhile, rice purchasing in non-modern places, such as markets and rice millings, is mostly performed by rural households. In addition, households in the rural area also prefer to buy uncooked rice from rice milling and farmers, and some households do not buy rice since they have owned rice fields. The number of household who buy cooked rice is larger in urban than in rural. Urban household is more widely on where to purchase rice than rural households. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This study examines consumers’ willingness to pay for local rice product among the commercialize importing activities. Indonesian citizens as rice consumers confirm the highest interest in local rice while having less knowledge of rice type differences across the markets. The bidding price results in three rounds of auction determine the increasing nominal for local rice type after passing through tasting session and getting more information about both rice types. Most consumers highly evaluate both cooked rice and uncooked rice through the swelling and variety. Meanwhile, rice consumers who noticed rice looks at first prefer to pay for great quality specifically in rice color according to the evaluation of the attributes. © 2023, The Authors. The influence of social capital on the small-holders empowerment of livestock farming in Sragen Regency

The empowerment of smallholders is part of sustainable agricultural development to increase production. This study aims to identify the characteristics of beef cattle farmers and social capital, and also to determine the effect of social capital on the empowerment of smallholder beef cattle farmers in Sragen Regency. The study was conducted in June 2021 in Plupuh District by using purposive sampling method to determine the location and the respondents. The number of respondents was 100 smallholders who had at least 1 year of experience in raising beef cattle. Data were collected through direct interviews with the smallholders and were analyzed descriptively by using multiple linear regression analysis together with the F test and R2 test in order to determine the effect of social capital on empowerment. The results showed that most of the respondents had a low level of education, and the majority of the respondents' occupations were laborers. It also showed that the respondents had a side job as a smallholder and the status of livestock ownership was their own. Subsequently, the regression analysis obtained Y = 4.517 – 0.525X1 + 0.617X2 +0.153X3 - 0.186X4 + 0.550X5 and it is interpreted that all social capital variables consisting of willingness, openness, encouragement, activeness, and participation simultaneously affect the empowerment of beef cattle smallholders. In the coefficient of determination test (R2), the results obtained is 0.321 which implied that the social capital variable had an influence of only 32.1% on the empowerment of beef cattle smallholders, while the remaining 67.9% was influenced by other variables not included in this study. Therefore, it was concluded that social capital only had an effect of 32.1% on the empowerment of livestock smallholders.

The local livestock knowledge system is seen as the contributor to agricultural and rural development but not all local knowledge has the opportunities to be explored, customized, and applied to follow developmental dynamics. This research aimed to analyze the local livestock knowledge system of Peranakan Etawa (PE) goats from its elements, roles, management, and knowledge dissemination. This study was conducted in Kaligesing Subdistrict, Purworejo Regency, Central Java using qualitative methods. The data were obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation. Participants were determined purposively which consisted of smallholder farmers. The data validity was checked using triangulation of data sources and methods. Data analysis included data collection, data reduction, data presentation, data interpretation, and data collection. The results indicated that the PE goat farming local knowledge system elements existed by the integration of traditional and scientific knowledge systems that were distributed and applied by the farmers' community as a source of livestock knowledge. Management and dissemination of local knowledge use the combination of traditional and modern patterns.

The study aimed to analyze the potentials of Positive Deviance (PD) approach in addressing the problems of Peranakan Etawa (PE) goat farm. By using a qualitative approach, this research was conducted in the Kaligesing Sub-district, Purworejo Regency, Central Java. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and observation. Participants were determined purposively, which include elements of smallholder farmers and the other stakeholders such as extension worker and the staffs of Agency of Agriculture Livestock Marine and Fisheries of Purworejo Regency. The results showed that the PD approach has a possibility to be applied in driving behavioral change that leads to the livestock management as agribusiness practices. It is powered by a situation where the livestock problem was not solely in the form of technical barriers. The existence of PD and the support of local leaders such as village heads as well as the commitment of small farmers themselves are necessary in order to successfully imply the agribusiness practices.

This research aimed to discover the dynamics and the peasants' household rice consumption pattern in Central Java. This research employed a qualitative approach, with the interview and focus group discussion being the techniques of data collection. The research location was selected purposely by taking two regencies constituting the main rice production centers in Central Java: Grobogan and Cilacap. The results show that peasants' household rice consumption pattern in Central Java was affected by the unhulled rice price, planting pattern, and profit-sharing system. The unhulled rice price affected planting pattern because when the unhulled rice price was low or predicted to be lower in the next harvest season, the rice-rice-rice planting pattern would change torice-rice-palawija (secondary crop). Rice would be stored as consumption reserve and marketed gradually as the price increased gradually. If the price condition increased, rice would be marketed by taking the reserve for household consumption. Farmers had a local principle that 'rice is a source of life;selling rice means selling the life.' Local wisdom of profit sharing, such as 'maro','bawon', 'pemajek', 'mrapat', and 'mrotelu', to areas, the populations of which were tenant farmers, ensured that the rice consumption could be fulfilled through the profit-sharing system.

Young generation's perception on the agricultural sector

The future agricultural sector is required not only to maximize the management of natural resources but also to manage human resources as the main actors driving and maintaining its existence amid the decreasing interest of the young generation in the agricultural sector. The agricultural sector is prone to high uncertainty due to global climate change. This research sought to identify young generation's perception on the agricultural sector. This study was a descriptive research using survey on 120 farmers' children (called as Taruna Tani) in Sragen Regency, Indonesia with direct interview through questionnaires as primary data. The results showed that most youths had fairly good perceptions in terms of income, social status, and work convenience in the agricultural sector, but not in terms of career development and warranty of future life. The youth concerned with the lack of careers and warranty of future life if they work in the agricultural sector. However, today's young generations are very potential to be prepared for being the human resources to develop agricultural development in the future. Therefore, some efforts are needed to encourage the youths to work in the agricultural sector through socializing and educating them about agriculture and introducing technology and cultivation innovations to anticipate the impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector.
