S T E R N We are in a new era – not just because we are in a new century but because we are part of a shifting political and economic terrain in which American culture, taken in its broadest sense, is at once emulated worldwide and disdained. The new global geography of economics, ideas, and political power in the twenty-ﬁrst century demands that we put aside many of our most cherished beliefs about our uniqueness in favor of shared common ground. The interconnectivity of globalization confronts us with realities and complexities that previous generations could ignore or sweep under the cultural rug, and engenders contact with other cultures that makes us acutely aware of the multiplicity and contradictions of our own political, religious, and artistic beliefs. While globalization has led to a greater transfer of ideas, enabling the adoption of previously foreign or unknown design strategies, it has also facilitated the disappearance of local traditions and histories. The pressure to meet the marketplace with expedient razzle-dazzle has never been more irresistible. The architectural landscape of the world is ﬂattening, as modernism sweeps across the globe, overtaking local vernaculars. Architects, encouraged to strike out with acontextual work not rooted in any sense of connection to place or 1 7 R history, ﬁnd themselves trapped in an extreme form of aesthetic narcissism. Globalization can be a distraction and even a threat to architecture ’s continued development as an art form. For one thing, globalization renders architecture more political than ever. Buildings such as the now-destroyed World Trade Center are no longer seen as artifacts but as pawns in the unfolding drama of modernity, and in that speciﬁc instance as a reminder that modernity is not everywhere appreciated. NAGPRA's Effects on Anthropology Education: Views from a College Serving Native American Communities

作者： Kathleen Fine-Dare Mona Charles Dawn Mulhern Charles Riggs Chair of the department of anthropology at Fort Lewis College and co-conducted her college's first NAGPRA consultation sessions. She is currently working on a study of ways that urban indigenous residents of Quito Ecuador make connections to archaeological sites as part of a process of ethnogenesis. Served as director of the archaeological field school and instructor of anthropology at Fort Lewis College since 1998. She is also director of archaeological resources for Fort Lewis College's Office of Community Services. Her recent work has focused on the prehistory and early historic settlements of Southwest Colorado. Assistant professor and NAGPRA coordinator at Fort Lewis College since 2005 following her work at the Repatriation Osteology Laboratory National Museum of Natural History Smithsonian Institution. Her research involves bone histology and patterns of disease in ancient populations in North America and Egypt. Associate professor and director of the cultural resource management certificate program at Fort Lewis College. He previously worked as a project director and as mapping department director at Statistical Research Inc. He specializes in prehistoric architecture and has worked with numerous Southwestern tribes.

Material Models and Immaterial Paradigms in the Rietveld Schroder House

In the interplay between scale models and intellectual paradigms, architectural models construct immaterial ideas. This confluence of material and immaterial in architectural modeling is explored through an examination of Gerrit Rietveld's design for the Rietveld Schroder house (1924). His first wood massing model of the project is often considered to have been created before the idea of flowing space and as an instance of Thomas Kuhn's paradigm shift. Instead, through Gaston Bachelard's concept of paradigm nesting, the model is shown to be integral to Rietveld's design process that used three mutually exclusive notions of mass across different conceptual terrains.

Tolerance Levels of Roadside Trees to Air Pollutants Based on Relative Growth Rate and Air Pollution Tolerance Index

Motor vehicles release carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and particulate matters to the air as pollutants. Vegetation can absorb these pollutants through gas exchange processes. The objective of this study was to examine the combination of the relative growth rate (RGR) and physiological responses in determining tolerance levels of plant species to air pollutants. Physiological responses were calculated as air pollution tolerance index (APTI). Eight roadside tree species were placed at polluted (Jagorawi highway) and unpolluted (Sindangbarang field) area. Growth and physiological parameters of the trees were recorded, including plant height, leaf area, total ascorbate, total chlorophyll, leaf-extract pH, and relative water content. Scoring criteria for the combination of RGR and APTI method was given based on means of the two areas based on two-sample t test. Based on the total score of RGR and APTI, Lagerstroemia speciosa was categorized as a tolerant species;and Pterocarpus indicus, Delonix regia, Swietenia macrophylla were categorized as moderately tolerant species. Gmelina arborea, Cinnamomum burmanii, and Mimusops elengi were categorized as intermediate tolerant species. Lagerstroemia speciosa could be potentially used as roadside tree. The combination of RGR and APTI value was better to determinate tolerance level of plant to air pollutant than merely APTI method. © 2008 Institut Pertanian Bogor

This article discusses the concept of and the definition of the term 'contemporary art.' The discussion focuses on the positive connotations related to the value judgment of calling something a piece of art and to the contemporary relevance of the specific piece called art. The trans-individual principle of 'art as such,' the economic aspects of labeling art, and the social ideal of the artist as entrepreneur are mentioned. The art quality model of several museums is discussed including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, California.

Territoriality and the market system - Adat land vs. state regulations on land matters in Bali

This article discusses in detail the eroding impact of the basic regulation on land matters and Agrarian principles (BRLMAP), and the implications of the modern planning system imposed by the Indonesian state over the Balinese territorial principles of the Adat-customary law. The aspirations underlining market-based practices of the BRLMAP and the communal practices of the Adat became the fundamental cause for the emergence of spatial competition among diverse interests in land acquisition and use. The overriding economic interests promoted by the state and its development partners through Bali's tourist industry, recognition of individual rights, the establishment of a land market, and dominant state control over land, has led to the elimination of the Adat land tenure, disintegration of tanah Adat-Adat land, and weakening of the Desa Adat Institution as the community representative over land matters. These institutions are critical elements, not only to the sustenance of Adat territoriality, but to Balinese culture as a whole. The idea of state systems supposedly balancing the differing development attitudes through 'neutral' professional governance is therefore in doubt. Development capital, the state, and the 'public interest' as represented by the Desa Adat therefore remain a conflictual set of practices, which demand resolution. This paper assesses air flow characteristics in and around buildings under different environmental conditions using computational fluid dynamics modeling techniques. It argues that any "generic" representation of air flow without explicitly stating the quantification of the parameters assumed in deriving those representations (as commonly encountered in architectural design guides or similar publications), may be erroneous and should be used with caution. To illustrate this point, an experimental approach is adopted to select certain air flow phenomena or design guidelines offered in some "representative" publications where the environmental context may not have been explicitly communicated in qualitative and quantitative terms. Demonstrative sets of quantitative values are then applied to the relevant design input parameters within certain assumed environmental context to simulate the air flow performance using an air flow modeling tool CFD-ACE+ (2000). The results from the parametric experimental set-ups demonstrate that any change in the environmental factors can significantly affect the boundary conditions and consequently the indoor air flow in both velocity and distribution pattern. It reinforces the main assertion of this work that it is critical for the building design team to clearly define the performance goals of the project as well as the contextual conditions, covering both the qualitative and the quantitative aspects as comprehensively as possible. This will facilitate a productive design process that will yield clear and accountable solutions accordingly.
