Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. A measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair (tt¯) production in association with a photon is presented. The measurement is performed in the single-lepton tt¯ decay channel using proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN at a centre-of-mass-energy of 13 TeV during the years 2015–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹. The charge asymmetry is obtained from the distribution of the difference of the absolute rapidities of the top quark and antiquark using a profile likelihood unfolding approach. It is measured to be A_C=−0.003±0.029 in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. © 2023 The Author(s)

Searches for the exclusive decays of the Higgs boson to an ω meson and a photon or a K⁎ meson and a photon can probe flavour-conserving and flavour-violating Higgs boson couplings to light quarks, respectively. Searc...

Searches for the exclusive decays of the Higgs boson to an ω meson and a photon or a K^⁎ meson and a photon can probe flavour-conserving and flavour-violating Higgs boson couplings to light quarks, respectively. Searches for these decays, along with the analogous Z boson decay to an ω meson and a photon, are performed with a pp collision data sample corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 134 fb⁻¹ collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The obtained 95% confidence-level upper limits on the respective branching fractions are B(H→ωγ)<5.5×10⁻⁴, B(H→K^⁎γ)<2.2×10⁻⁴ and B(Z→ωγ)<3.9×10⁻⁶. The limits for H→ωγ and Z→ωγ are 370 times and 140 times the Standard Model expected values, respectively. The result for Z→ωγ corresponds to a two-orders-of-magnitude improvement over the limit obtained by the DELPHI experiment at LEP. © 2023 The Author

Constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling are set by combining double-Higgs boson analyses in the bb¯bb¯, bb¯τ⁺τ⁻ and bb¯γγ decay channels with single-Higgs boson analyses targeting the γγ, ZZ^⁎, WW^⁎, τ⁺τ⁻ and bb¯ decay channels. The data used in these analyses were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton–proton collisions at s=13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 126–139 fb⁻¹. The combination of the double-Higgs analyses sets an upper limit of μ_HH<2.4 at 95% confidence level on the double-Higgs production cross-section normalised to its Standard Model prediction. Combining the single-Higgs and double-Higgs analyses, with the assumption that new physics affects only the Higgs boson self-coupling (λ_HHH), values outside the interval −0.4<κ_λ=(λ_HHH/λ_HHH^SM)<6.3 are excluded at 95% confidence level. The combined single-Higgs and double-Higgs analyses provide results with fewer assumptions, by adding in the fit more coupling modifiers introduced to account for the Higgs boson interactions with the other Standard Model particles. In this relaxed scenario, the constraint becomes −1.4<κ_λ<6.1 at 95% CL. © 2023 The Author(s)

The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 140 fb−1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The charm quark is tagged by the presence of a charmed hadron reconstructed with a secondary-vertex fit. The W boson is reconstructed from the decay to either an electron or a muon and the missing transverse momentum present in the event. The charmed mesons reconstructed are D+→K−π+π+ and D*+→D0π+→(K−π+)π+ and the charge conjugate decays in the fiducial regions where pT(e,μ)>30 GeV, |η(e,μ)|<2.5, pT(D(*))>8 GeV, and |η(D(*))|<2.2. The integrated and normalized differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W boson decay, and of the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron, are extracted from the data using a profile likelihood fit. The measured total fiducial cross sections are σfidOS–SS(W−+D+)=50.2±0.2(stat)−2.3+2.4(syst) pb, σfidOS–SS(W++D−)=48.5±0.2(stat)−2.2+2.3(syst) pb, σfidOS–SS(W−+D*+)=51.1±0.4(stat)−1.8+1.9(syst) pb, and σfidOS–SS(W++D*−)=50.0±0.4(stat)−1.8+1.9(syst) pb. Results are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculations performed using state-of-the-art parton distribution functions. Additionally, the ratio of charm to anticharm production cross sections is studied to probe the s−s¯ quark asymmetry. The ratio is found to be Rc±=0.971±0.006(stat)±0.011(syst). The ratio and cross-section measurements are consistent with the predictions obtained with parton distribution function sets that have a symmetric s−s¯ sea, indicating that any s−s¯ asymmetry in the Bjorken-x region relevant for this measurement is small.

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the bb¯bb¯ final state is presented. The analysis uses 126 fb−1 of pp collision data at s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, and targets both the gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion production modes. No evidence of the signal is found and the observed (expected) upper limit on the cross section for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production is determined to be 5.4 (8.1) times the Standard Model predicted cross section at 95% confidence level. Constraints are placed on modifiers to the HHH and HHVV couplings. The observed (expected) 2σ constraints on the HHH coupling modifier, κλ, are determined to be [−3.5,11.3] ([−5.4,11.4]), while the corresponding constraints for the HHVV coupling modifier, κ2V, are [−0.0,2.1] ([−0.1,2.1]). In addition, constraints on relevant coefficients are derived in the context of the Standard Model effective field theory and Higgs effective field theory, and upper limits on the HH production cross section are placed in seven Higgs effective field theory benchmark scenarios.

Many extensions of the Standard Model predict the production of dark matter particles at the LHC. Sufficiently light dark matter particles may be produced in decays of the Higgs boson that would appear invisible to the detector. This Letter presents a statistical combination of searches for H→invisible decays where multiple production modes of the Standard Model Higgs boson are considered. These searches are performed with the ATLAS detector using 139 fb⁻¹ of proton–proton collisions at a centre–of–mass energy of [Formula presented] at the LHC. In combination with the results at [Formula presented] and [Formula presented], an upper limit on the H→invisible branching ratio of 0.107 (0.077) at the 95% confidence level is observed (expected). These results are also interpreted in the context of models where the 125 GeV Higgs boson acts as a portal to dark matter, and limits are set on the scattering cross-section of weakly interacting massive particles and nucleons. © 2023 The Author(s)

A search for new phenomena giving rise to pairs of opposite electrically charged muons with impact parameters in the millimeter range is presented, using 139 fb⁻¹ of s=13 TeV pp collision data from the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search targets the gap in coverage between existing searches targeting final states with leptons with large displacement and prompt leptons. No significant excess over the background expectation is observed and exclusion limits are set on the mass of long-lived scalar supersymmetric muon-partners (smuons) with much lower lifetimes than previously targeted by displaced muon searches. Smuon lifetimes down to 1 ps are excluded for a smuon mass of 100 GeV, and smuon masses up to 520 GeV are excluded for a proper lifetime of 10 ps, at 95% confidence level. Finally, model-independent limits are set on the contribution from new phenomena to the signal-region yields. © 2023 The Author(s)

Measurements of joint-polarisation states of W and Z gauge bosons in W^±Z production are presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹ of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The W^±Z candidate events are reconstructed using leptonic decay modes of the gauge bosons into electrons and muons. The simultaneous pair-production of longitudinally polarised vector bosons is measured for the first time with a significance of 7.1 standard deviations. The measured joint helicity fractions integrated over the fiducial region are f₀₀=0.067±0.010, f_0T=0.110±0.029, f_T0=0.179±0.023 and f_TT=0.644±0.032, in agreement with the next-to-leading-order Standard Model predictions. Individual helicity fractions of the W and Z bosons are also measured and found to be consistent with joint helicity fractions within the expected amounts of correlation. Both the joint and individual helicity fractions are also measured separately in W⁺Z and W⁻Z events. Inclusive and differential cross sections for several kinematic observables sensitive to polarisation are presented. © 2023
