This study delves into the Bromo magnitude of the fire incident in Indonesia, a notable tourism destination, uncovering significant gaps in knowledge regarding tourist-induced forest fires. We comprehensively analyze the incident's environmental, economic, social, and tourism impacts. environmentally, the fire caused severe damage to the region's ecosystems, upsetting ecological balances and diminishing air quality. This has far-reaching effects on flora, fauna, and the sustainability of natural resources. Forest fires release a significant amount of pollutants into the air, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and other harmful compounds. These pollutants can significantly degrade air quality, leading to health issues for humans and animals. The forest fire in the Bromo region of Indonesia had a profound impact, both economically and environmentally. The closure of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park drastically reduced tourism, leading to an 80 % drop in hotel occupancy and severe losses for local businesses like jeep rentals, eateries, and souvenir shops. Economically, this resulted in a significant decrease in Non-Tax State Revenue. environmentally, the fire destroyed over 50 hectares of land, severely damaging the national park's ecosystems and affecting biodiversity. The smoke and heat from the fire also led to poor air quality and potential health risks for local residents, as well as adverse effects on nearby agriculture, increasing stress and anxiety in the community. The study emphasizes the urgent need for stringent regulations, effective community engagement, and educational initiatives in forest conservation areas, particularly those attracting tourists. Our findings offer critical insights for policymakers, local authorities, and stakeholders in the tourism sector, highlighting the necessity of balancing environmental protection with the growth of the global travel industry. © 2024 The Author(s)

This study evaluates the flood hazard index in Kuala Langsa Village, Langsa City, Aceh, a region prone to frequent flooding due to its low-lying coastal location in eastern Aceh. It serves as a crucial link between North Sumatra and Aceh provinces. The area's significance underscores the importance of understanding and mitigating flood risks. By utilizing the coupled 1D/2D Hydraulic model, flood hazards are accurately predicted and mapped. The field data collection (as calibration) measures the maximum tidal water level based on information from residents affected by flooding on the land surface under their houses. Hydrological conditions during the December 2017 flood event are simulated using HEC-HMS. Hydraulic conditions are evaluated using HEC-RAS 6.4.1. The research aims to assess the flood hazard index in Kuala Langsa Village under spring tide conditions, considering variations in base flow and flood flow with return periods of 2 and 50 years upstream. The main results show that an FHI >2.62 (high) covers an area of 169.74 ha, 2.62 > FHI >2.23 (moderate) encompasses 172.60 ha, and FHI <2.23 (low) accounts for 222.32 ha. During the Q50 upstream flood, there was an increase in flood extent: low by 61.20 %, medium by 25.32 %, and high by 5.57 %. These findings deepen our understanding of estuary flood mechanisms and emphasize the importance of developing more effective adaptation strategies to reduce flood risks in the future. © 2024 The Authors

Strength and Permeability of Thermally Consolidated Soft Ground

This study investigates the effects of thermal treatment on the mechanical behavior of highly compressible Pak Phanang clay, a soft soil with low strength that typically requires advanced ground improvement methods. Heating is considered a promising technique for enhancing foundation stability, particularly for critical infrastructure. The research focuses on the thermo-mechanical behavior of the clay, emphasizing consolidation and solidification processes that influence load-bearing capacity. Isotropically consolidated undrained triaxial tests were conducted at temperatures of 30 °C, 40 °C, 50 °C, and 60 °C with over-consolidation ratios (OCR) of 1, 2, 4, and 8. The results showed that increasing temperature significantly enhanced both peak deviator stress (qu) and the secant Young’s modulus (E50), with a strong linear correlation: E50=108.70×qu. Dry density increased and organic matter content slightly decreased under thermal treatment, particularly in normally consolidated clay. Excess pore water pressure (EPWP) increased linearly with temperature across all OCR values. Consolidation volume change also increased with temperature but decreased as OCR rose. The coefficient of consolidation (Cv) improved with temperature, leading to faster consolidation, especially in normally consolidated specimens. The coefficient of permeability (k) increased with temperature but declined with higher OCR, with k rising by 14.6%–24.2% from 30 °C to 60 °C in normally consolidated samples. Predictive models for qu and k based on temperature and OCR demonstrated high accuracy. Overall, the findings provide a reliable understanding of the thermal–mechanical response of this clay type, supporting its application in temperature-assisted ground improvement. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The Manggarai Water Gate is a measurement point strategically located to measure Jakarta's flooding magnitude that keeps increasing from year to year. The 2015s gate capacity improvement underscores this importance. This paper applies a machine learning model that utilizes an atmospheric approach to predict the Manggarai water level as output. In the process, optimization is done by comparing three spatial input sizes and performing a sensitivity analysis of the input variables. Using a simple recurrent sequence, the model can predict the water level with a coefficient of determination (R2) reaching 0.7 using 18-hour recurrent data. This study can be used as the basis for further development that can take satellite data lead time advantage that is crucial for the early warning system. © 2021 IEEE.

Challenging body shaming with grading techniques in the fashion industry

Body shaming remains a prevalent concern in the fashion business, as conventional beauty standards sometimes exclude persons with varied body shapes. This study investigates the effect of pattern grading and motif grading approaches on reducing body shaming, particularly in the context of batik shirt production. The research highlights how various grading systems improve garment fit and cater to a broader range of body shapes, thereby challenging body shaming and promoting body inclusivity. The research examines the impact of grading methods on tailors' engagement, skill level, and self-assurance, showing that these methods enhance garment quality and empower industry professionals. This study employed a mixed-method approach, combining the creation of graded batik shirt prototypes with quantitative analysis using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The research indicates that motif grading maintains the traditional validity of batik designs while facilitating size modifications. Tailors expressed strong interest in adopting grading techniques, and the study proposes inclusive design solutions that effectively address body shaming in a traditional manner. The results suggest that integrating grading methodologies into fashion processes can foster a more inclusive and diverse business. Suggestions are offered for fashion designers, educational institutions, and companies to promote the implementation of grading techniques that accommodate body variation. This research identifies future research opportunities, such as incorporating technology in grading and formulating design methods to mitigate body shaming in the fashion industry. © 2025 The Authors

In 2022, there are 1,524 flood events out of a total of 3,531 disasters occurring in Indonesia. East Kalimantan Province ranked 20th among the 35 provinces in Indonesia with 28 flood occurrences in 2022, resulting in two fatalities. This highlights the urgent need for addressing flood hazard to prevent future casualties. There are some methods that can be used to determine the flood hazard in a region. In this research aims to identify flood-prone areas in East Kalimantan Province and evaluate the effectiveness of different mapping methods. The methodology that compares are the Pairwise Comparison method and Geomorphic Flood Index (GFI). The study's results provide flood-prone area maps of East Kalimantan Province using both methods, recommend the more efficient method for flood-prone area identification, and offer mitigation strategies based on the findings. This research is intended to serve as a reference for selecting the best method for identifying flood-prone areas and for informing policy decisions to mitigate flood impacts in East Kalimantan Province. © Author(s) 2025.

Domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a vital role in limiting the release of microplastics (MP) into the environment. This study examined MP removal efficiency from five centralized and four decentralized domestic WWTPs in Bangkok, Thailand. MP concentrations in wastewater and sludge were comparable between centralized and decentralized WWTPs, despite these decentralized WWTPs serving smaller populations and having limited treatment capacity. The elimination of MPs ranged from 50 to 96.8% in centralized WWTPs and 14.2–53.6% in decentralized WWTPs. It is noted that the retained MPs concentrations in sludge ranged from 20,000 to 228,100 MP/kg dry weight. The prevalence of synthetic fibers and fragments could be attributed to their pathways from laundry or car tires, and the accidental release of a variety of plastic wastes ended up in investigated domestic WWTPs. Removal of MPs between the centralized and decentralized WWTPs was influenced by several impact factors including initial MP concentrations, longer retention times, MP fragmentation, and variations of MP concentrations in sludge leading to different activated sludge process configurations. Sewage sludge has become a primary location for the accumulation of incoming microplastics in WWTPs. The MPs entering and leaving each unit process were varied due to the unique characteristics of MPs, and their different treatment efficiencies. While the extended hydraulic retention period in decentralized WWTPs decreased the MP removal efficacy, the centralized WWTP with the two-stage activated sludge process achieved the highest MP removal efficiency. © 2024 The Authors

In an era demanding sustainable consumption, the challenge of single-used plastic (SUP) remains significant. This study delves into the transformative capacity of the Importance-Performance Eduruption method to reshape consumerism and encourage SUP reduction. Drawing on binary choice models, we elucidated the determinants influencing students' willingness to participate in SUP reduction initiatives. Beyond the quantitative metrics, the study highlighted the deep-seated influence of educational methods. Applied learning strategies like Problem-Based and Project-Based Learning emerged as influential touchpoints, aligning students with sustainable habits. Simultaneously, the importance-performance analysis revealed areas needing immediate intervention, notably research-oriented methods. Our findings spotlight the influential role education plays in driving sustainable consumer behavior. By integrating importance-performance insights into curriculum planning and broader policy frameworks, stakeholders can more effectively harness the disruptive potential of education to further the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 12 and create a more sustainable future. © 2024 The Authors

In retrograde gas condensate reservoirs, the accumulation of liquid from natural gas below the dew-point pressure leads to condensate blockage, a significant issue in reservoir damage. Although most of this liquid doesn't reach the level required for production, it hinders the flow of natural gas, affecting its production. This study focuses on the impact of gas injection methods (like methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) and high-temperature steam on an Egyptian retrograde gas condensate reservoir. Various scenarios were tested, involving different temperatures, enthalpy levels, types of injection gases (CO2, N2, CH4), and injection rates. The findings revealed that neither conventional nor thermal gas injection methods significantly increased cumulative gas production compared to simply depleting the reservoir. However, non-thermal gas injection methods boosted cumulative condensate production by 8.6%. Notably, thermal CO2 injection showed a substantial increase, enhancing condensate production by 28.9%. The study found that thermal gas injection does not vaporize condensate more effectively than conventional injection methods under similar reservoir pressure trends. Instead, the primary benefit of thermal injection is in enhancing condensate mobility. Therefore, thermal injection is most suitable for depleted retrograde reservoirs, where a significant amount of non-producible liquid has already accumulated. The research also explored the operational aspects of implementing thermal gas injection in retrograde gas condensate reservoirs. This includes considerations for carbon dioxide recovery units, compressors, storage tanks, corrosion-resistant pipelines and tubing strings, as well as corrosion inhibitors and downhole gas heaters. Effective municipal solid waste management (MSWM) is essential for sustainable urban development, significantly impacting environmental health, economic efficiency, and social well-being. It aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11), which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable by ensuring waste is safely managed from collection to disposal. This study evaluates the performance of MSWM practices across various cities in different regions, updated as of March 2023, to assess the achievement of SDG11. By reviewing published literature and conducting questionnaire surveys and key informant interviews with government authorities and service providers, data on access to managed MSW facilities were collected from 470 cities across various income-level regions to monitor MSWM progress toward SDG11 targets. Clustering algorithms and machine learning were employed to identify patterns and enhance MSWM practices across these regions, focusing on achieving SDG11. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified four clusters based on MSWM performance: high-income, upper-middle-income, lower-middle-income, and low-income regions. The developed decision-tree models provided a comprehensive analysis of effective MSW collection and disposal, achieving accuracies of approximately 75 % and 73 %, respectively. The models highlighted the importance of high collection coverage, proper disposal facilities, and robust institutional frameworks in achieving effective MSWM. The findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions and advanced analytical methods to enhance regional MSWM strategies, supporting the attainment of SDG11. © 2024 The Author(s)
