Enhancing field-scale bioremediation of weathered petroleum oil-contaminated soil with biocompost as a bulking agent

The field-scale cleanup of weathered petroleum oil-contaminated soils from the Minas Oil Fields in Indonesia was investigated using landfarming bioremediation technology. Sawdust produced from palm fronds, trunks, and bushes was used as a bulking agent, fermented with manure from cow, goat, and chicken dung as amylolytic and cellulolytic source microflora. Petrophylic bacteria known for their capability to degrade PAH were used as augmented microflora along with stimulated local indigenous microflora overgrown onsite. The findings demonstrated that, albeit at varying rates, the inoculum of native and augmented microflora raised the total colony-forming units (CFU) and the rate at which total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) were degraded in all contaminated soils treated in the soil bioremediation facilities (SBF). After 150 days of bioremediation operation, the bioremediation process for petroleum oil-contaminated soil effectively eliminated 165.79 kg of TPH from 2565 cubic meters of contaminated soil, with a recovery cost of 161 USD per cubic of treated soil. The initial average TPH concentration in the soil was 64,799 ± 9373 mg/kg and decreased to a lower concentration of 163 ± 74 mg/kg after bioremediation was completed. Both native and augmented petrophilic microflora showed significant growth over tenfold, with an average number of colonies at the initial stage of the bioremediation process ranging from 5.9 × 10⁵ to 6.6 × 10⁶ CFU per gram of soil. We show that a practical and affordable bioremediation technique is the onsite production of petrophylic microflora (both native and augmented) and compost from locally available biomass waste. © 2024 The Authors

Mechanical properties of hydraulic concretes with partial replacement of Portland cement by pozzolans obtained from agro-industrial residues: A review

The search for alternative material sources to conventional ones has had a significant impact on the construction sector today, driven by the implementation of sustainable development policies on a global scale. Alternative cementitious materials, such as agricultural industry by-products, have been introduced to ensure the efficient use of renewable natural resources while promoting a balance between the technical and economic aspects of infrastructure projects. This article provides an overview of research conducted on the use of pozzolans derived from agro-industrial by-products, such as rice husk ash (RHA), palm oil fuel ash (POFA), and sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA), which have a high content of amorphous silica. This silica reacts with calcium hydroxide during the hydration process of Portland cement, leading to the production of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel with cementitious properties. Investigations have explored the improvements these pozzolans provide in terms of compressive, flexural, and tensile strength in concretes where conventional Portland cement has been partially replaced by these materials. The influence of temperature and grinding processes used in their preparation was also determined, with optimal temperatures for obtaining amorphous silica ranging between 600 °C and 700 °C. Additionally, the optimal replacement levels for enhancing the mechanical properties of concrete were found to range between 10 % and 20 %. © 2024 The Authors

Climate change has affected the whole world and caused disasters, include drought. Since Tana Mbanas village in Central Sumba District is the driest remote area in eastern region of Indonesia, gender inequality has affected in daily life of people in the village instead of other social and environmental problems. This research aimed to evaluate how gender mainstreaming implemented in drought disaster risk reduction in Tana Mbanas village in Central Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The result of the research is expected to become a mirror that reflects Sumba island gender and development issues. The research took place in Tana Mbanas village in Central Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, and conducted by qualitative method with purposive data sampling. The steps taken in the research were observation, data collecting by questionnaire and in-depth interview to respondents, and literature review. It was reported that Tana Mbanas village people has given water management assistance by village fund, conducting water management counselling, saving water, and harvesting rain systems in every household. This research meets conclusions that: (1) Several programs and planned actions in water supply system and infrastructure development have become initiatives of government agencies of village authorities, BPBD and Public Work Agency of Central Sumba Regency;(2) People demonstrated vulnerability to drought as well as lack of water supply and also water resources;(3) Strong efforts should be conducted to educate people and increase women capacity in coping issues of poverty, drought, and lack of water supply;and (4) Government agencies and other private institutions have to build women capacity as their participation in enhancing gender equality and mainstreaming gender. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The problem of flooding in Central Vietnam in general and the lower Ba River in particular is one of the natural disasters that frequently threatens people's lives and socioeconomic development in the ***,climate change is becoming ever more prominent and hotter,making extreme natural disasters more unusual and *** this research,MIKE-FLOOD—a model that connects a 1-dimensional(1-D)MIKE 11 Hydrodynamics(HD)model with a 2-dimensional(2-D)MIKE 21 HD model—was used to set *** model was calculated for three floods:(1)flood in October 1993,(2)flood in November 2003,and(3)flood in November 2007;these are floods with high frequency and relatively large *** results show that the 1993 flood rose and receded *** flood peak inundated an area of 22,600 ha,accounting for 52%of the natural *** flooded areas deeper than 1,2,3,4,and 5m were 16500,11,000,7000,4200,and 2200 ha,*** the center of Tuy Hoa city,the flooded area at the time of maximum water level was almost 100%.

The society often faces a communication barrier with the deaf and mute community due to the lack of sign language translators. Hand gestures are used as a sign language to communicate between the ordinary people and the deaf people. However, the existing way to learn sign language is ineffective and inconvenient. The number of mobile translator applications for the Malaysian Sign Language on the market is less. The proposed system contains a sign detector mechanism using Support Vector Machine (SVM) to detect and interpret Malaysian Sign Language. The software used in this project were IntelliJ IDEA and Android Studio. This project's development consists of four main phases: dataset acquisition, dataset trainer, shape classification, and sign recognition. Each character is tested ten times to measure the performance of the developed system. The application is performed using an Android smartphone and successfully tested with character A to Z in a normal light condition with a maximum distance of 0.7 m. The successfully testing rate of this developed system is 90%. This application allows people to easily communicate with the deaf community because it is user-friendly and does not require an internet connection. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Marine pollution by various debris is rising in the context of increasing urbanization, industrialization and worldwide trade. Here, we review marine macro-litter with focus on sources, abundance, distribution, and impact on aquatic wildlife, human health, and the economy. We observe that about 75–80% of marine litter originates from land-based sources, including poorly managed landfills and improper disposal. Macro-litter ingestion by marine life is of growing concern, in particular concerning the presence of plastics and associated pollutants, e.g., bisphenol A and phthalates, in fishes. These pollutants are accumulated and transferred to human via seafood. Marine plastic pollution induces a substantial rise of economic costs due to the decline of ecosystem services. Mitigation of marine plastic pollution should be done by following the ten Rs principles of refuse, rethink, reduce, re-use, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, repurpose, recycle, and recover. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

A novel double-coating technique was employed to encapsulate levofloxacin (LVF), a potent antibacterial drug, using the particles from gas-saturated solutions (PGSS) process to achieve extended release. The primary coating utilized glyceryl tristearate (GT), a lipid with a high melting point (72 °C), followed by a secondary coating with trimyristin (TM), a lipid with a lower melting point (52 °C). For comparison, a single-coating approach was also explored, using the biocompatible polymer poly-(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). The resulting particles were characterized for their shape, size, and LVF encapsulation efficiency, with confirmation of LVF entrapment provided by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis. The particles, with an average diameter of 95.3 ± 16.5 μm, exhibited an encapsulation efficiency of up to 92.1 ± 2.5%. Furthermore, in vitro release studies revealed that the double-coated microcapsules effectively suppressed the initial burst release and provided controlled, extended release of LVF (t30D = 36.3%), demonstrating the efficiency of this encapsulation method for prolonged drug delivery.

This study explores the energy potential of rubber sludge, highlighting its calorific value (13.92–22.15 MJ/kg) and significant organic content, making it a promising feedstock for renewable energy. Techniques such as pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion, combustion, and gasification can effectively harness this potential. Comparative analysis indicates that rubber sludge has an energy recovery potential comparable to or even higher than lignite. Thermochemical processes, including hydrothermal liquefaction and gasification, offer benefits such as reduced waste toxicity and volume, alongside energy and material recovery. However, challenges such as high costs, technical difficulties, and potential pollutant emissions persist. Cost–benefit analyses indicate economic feasibility under specific conditions like high conversion efficiency and favorable policies. Current global practices in rubber sludge management vary, with countries like Denmark, Germany, and Sweden implementing advanced treatments, while others face challenges in coordination and technology. Future research emphasizes improving conversion technologies and integrating hybrid energy systems to enhance energy recovery and reduce environmental impact. The study underscores the importance of life cycle assessments in optimizing the sustainability of rubber sludge-to-energy processes and advocates for innovative approaches through Design Thinking to develop tailored solutions.
