The amount of waste in Indonesia is estimated to reach 68 million tons in 2019, of which 9.52 million tons is a plastic waste. With this amount, Indonesia is ranked second in the world as the largest producer of plastic waste. One area that suffers from plastic waste is the coastal area. This plastic waste is difficult to decompose and cause environmental problems. Likewise, it happened on the Tambaan coast in Tambaan sub-district, Panggungrejo subdistrict, Pasuruan city. Currently, accumulation of plastic waste is evident throughout the coastal area. The accumulation of scattered plastic waste and its proximity to the residents' settlements has become a hotbed of mosquitoes and caused a pungent smell. The Serving Doctoral program at Universitas Brawijaya offers a solution to process plastic waste into fuel oil such as diesel, kerosene, and premium. The technology used was Muryani's distillation from Wlingi, Blitar Regency. The technology can change certain types of plastic waste to produce fuel. Karang Taruna Bina Hang Tuah was acted as a reliable partner to assist the implementation of the technology on site. This study aims to strengthen the capacity of Karangtaruna in Tambaan Village to be more concerned about the environmental problems of Tambaan beach by processing waste that has been polluted by plastic waste. The results of plastic waste treatment showed that 10 kg of dried plastic waste can be transformed into diesel, premium and kerosene with the efficiency value of 60%, 35%, and 15%, respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The shortfin scad is a pelagic fisheries resource that plays an important role in the economy of the South Sulawesi marine fisheries sector. Besides its use for consumption by local communities, shortfin scad are also used as bait in the tuna fishery and exported frozen. Over the past five years there has been a decline in catches caused by uncontrolled exploitation. To date, there is still no control over the exploitation of shortfin scad, and it is feared the sustainability of shortfin scad as a fisheries resource is threatened. This research aimed to analyse specific aspects of shortfin scad biology for this population, including sex ratio, size at first maturity, and growth pattern. The study was conducted in the waters off Makassar, in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, using direct observation with a survey method. Fish samples were obtained from catches landed by fishermen at the Paotere fishing harbour in Makassar City. Sampling was conducted from early April to early August 2017. The shortfin scad sample obtained comprised 201 male fishes and 169 female fishes. The results showed that the sex ratio of the shortfin scad (male:female) was 1.1:1.0. The shortfin scad reached first maturity at a fork length of 18.24 - 19.54 cm for males and 16.45 - 17.24 cm for females. The Gonad Maturity Index (GMI) of male fish was dominated by immature gonad classes (GMI I and GMI II), while for females GMI III and GMI IV dominated the sample, indicating that females mature earlier than males. Male and female growth patterns were allometric positive with b>3, indicating that the gain in weight was faster than the increase in length. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Sungkur ship is used to catch fish and shrimp in the coastal waters of Tanah Laut Regency. The ship is operated actively in a push manner. This research aimed to: (1) Analyze the Sungkur ship enforcement arm during the fishing operation (2) Analyze the Sungkur rolling ship movement in regular wave beam seas conditions. The research was conducted in March-May 2018. The research used an experimental method of the fishing operation. Analysis of data through simulation and numerical using naval architecture formula and the results interpreted descriptively. Equipment that is used includes Sungkur fishery, camera, stationery, measuring instrument, water pass, slide, yarn, pendulum, GPS, stopwatch and computer. The results of study showed that the main dimension value ratio of sample ship L/B = 4.68-7.0, L/D = 5.0- 1.2, and B/D = 1.0-2.0. GZ enforcement arm during operation of the Sungkur ship was above the minimum standard value that has been set IMO that is equal to 0.675. Rolling highs at 14.4° with a wave height of -0.46 m and the lowest rolling at -14.4° with a wave height of 0.46 m. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Status of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) handlines fisheries based on length of maturity

Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is one of large pelagic potential and economical species from the family of Scombridae. Production of yellowfin tuna from several potential fisheries areas (WPP) in Maluku was reported in the condition of overfishing. Meanwhile, tuna fisheries have been the potential resource for export demand. It is therefore, the status of yellowfin tuna fisheries should be monitored regularly following the regulation of PERMEN KP no 4 year 2017. The aims of this study were to measure the size of maturity of yellowfin tuna during October to December 2018 and utilize the empirical relationship to estimate optimum length and maximum length reached during this period. Observation on yellowfin tuna was conducted by joining local fishers from Kawa village, West Seram Regency. Handlines were occupied to catch yellowfin tuna around Banda Sea. From the catch sizes ranged from was 34cm to 168cm, the length maturity (Lm) of yellowfin tuna is 107.2cm of total length for female and 112.9cm for male. From the empirical relationship, the optimum length (Lopt) of yellowfin tuna during October-December 2018 was 120.5cm and maximum length (Lmax) was 181.4cm. This study showed that 90% of yellowfin catch was immature which indicated a recruitment overfishing. Only 2.4% of mega-spawners were caught during this study and indicated growth overfishing. Indication of an overfishing of the yellowfin tuna fishery contradicted to larger size of first maturity found. This contrary is discussed and balance fishing strategy is proposed as the idea to maintain the population of yellowfin tuna.

The decree of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and fisheries No. 2 of 2015 has disturbed many fishermen in Indonesia, including Scottish seine fishermen. In that decree, the government concludes that the Scottish seine is not selective in catching fish and tends to disrupt the sustainability of small pelagic fish resources. This study aimed to analyse the biological aspects of fish caught with Scottish seine nets during the west monsoon season in the waters of Mamuju, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study was carried out from January to March 2016 with a case study of 1 unit during 30 fishing trips. The data collected included the type of fish caught, the weight and length of each fish by species. Data on fish taxa and size were analysed graphically and descriptively. The composition of the fish caught during the study was: shortfin scads (38%), bigeye scads (18%), sardines (14%), mackerel tuna (9%), Indian mackerel (7%), torpedo scads (6%), white trevally (3%), and other species (5 %). The length of shortfin scads, bigeye scads, sardinella, and mackerel tuna ranged from 9.9 - 18.2 cm;8.5 - 19.5 cm;10 - 12.5 cm;and 10-15 cm, respectively. In general, the fish caught were still classified as immature and not suitable for capture. To support sustainable fishing, it is necessary to limit fishing in the period from January to March. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Fish population dynamics are determined by the balance between population increase resulted from growth and addition of new individuals (recruitment), and population decrease due to fishing mortality and natural mortality. It is important to understand fish resources condition, including their change pattern caused by pressures on coral reef fisheries resource in coastal area of Ternate Island. This research aimed to analyze mortality and exploitation rate of several reef fishes that caught at coastal area of Ternate Island. Stock assessment method was used to determine the mortality and exploitation rate of some reef fishes. study results showed that the fishing mortality of the sample species was lower than their natural mortality, while the exploitation rate results also showed the same condition those found in mortality rate, where the fish with high growth coefficient tended to have high mortality rates.

Eddies occur almost everywhere in the oceans and play an important role in ocean circulation. They represent a large part of the ocean’s kinetic energy and may indicate their transport and mixing of temperature and salinity. This study investigates the relationship between eddies, sea surface height (SSH), and sea surface temperature (SST) in the Indian Ocean in April 2020. We carry out the analysis using monthly average data for currents, SSH, and SST from the data portal Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) together with wind data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) / National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) for April 2020. From the results of this study, we found that two eddies occurred in Aceh waters (coordinates (93°E,5°N) and (98°E,6°N)) in the northern hemisphere. The two Eddies occur with minimal SSH contours in the middle. The direction of the eddies appears in the form of a current counterclockwise movement. Because it occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, the current movement is deflected to the right, resulting in upwelling. The occurrence of a cold SST in the middle of the eddies confirms the appearance of the two eddies.

The coral reef fisheries activity at the coastal area of Ternate Island may impact the coral reefs' resources and ecosystems in this region. Management and utilization of the coral reef fishery resources that are not accompanied by an understanding of the structure and function of each component of the ecosystem can increase disturbance to the ecosystem, and adversely affect the structural components of the coral reef ecosystem in the coastal area of Ternate Island. Management and utilization of the coral reef fishery resources that are not accompanied by an understanding of the structure and function of each component of the ecosystem can increase the amount of disturbance to the ecosystem, and adversely affect the structural components of the coral reef ecosystem in the coastal area of Ternate Island. The lack of information and understanding of the ecosystem structure and function makes harvest controls impractical in fisheries management. Spatial management, such as MPAs, community marine tenure, and comprehensive marine zoning, within restrictions on destructive and inefficient fishing gear, may lead to reversing the decline in coral reef fisheries and the associated ecosystem. The urgent need to reform coral reef management focuses on the interconnected system as linked social-ecological systems.
