Talise Valangguni and Tanamodindi Village are among the areas that affected by 28 September 2018 earthquake. This fact-based on our findings about ground surface deformation, the liquefaction and normal fault surface rupture effect. We then make further observations to record the existing hazard characteristics and delineate the affected area to see the hazards configuration to geological factors. The results showed there were 5 liquefaction areas with about 0.13-1.29 km2. The liquefaction effect characteristics that we found are fracture, downlift-uplift, wavy surface, sudden stagnant water, and lateral spreading. Liquefaction sites in this area are identical in seasonal river routes and strongly influenced by lithological, hydrogeological, and earthquake. The sediment deposits are dominated by saturated sand, which can experience significant infiltration, worsening the soil strength size. As a result, this area is susceptible to liquefaction effects when strong earthquakes occur. Meanwhile, normal faults are ± 1.5 km long, oriented west-east, where the southern block has decreased between 5-30 cm. We suspect that this fault existed before the earthquake and appear on the surface after the quake, contributed by shocks and gravity. We hope that this information can be used as a reference for spatial planning for Palu City in disaster mitigation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The acquisition of seismic reflection involves generating and recording seismic wave field on/near the surface of the earth. Success of producing high quality seismic data depend on choice of seismic sources. There are commonly seismic sources for land seismic surveys such as explosive sources, vibrators and Accelerated Weight Drop (AWD). In some cases, the use of explosive sources often faces many problems, especially related to the costs, permission and environmental issues. The use of vibrators is also similar, facing problems such as the availability of access roads, permits and the environment impact. The use of AWD seems to be a solution as an alternative seismic sources when explosive or vibroseis cannot be used for some reasons. In this research, we have designed and built a mechanical seismic source named AWD250V1.0. This hand-made AWD prototype was developed for shallow seismic surveys. To evaluate the performance of this tool and to improve the design of the prototype, a field tests have been carried out. The test was conducted in Ciparay village, Bandung Regency, West Java. The survey area is mostly paddy field with the near surface covered by clay and highly seismic attenuation. The purposes is simply whether AWD can work properly or not while maintaining data quality and safety standards. In addition, the test is intended to find out how deep penetration of seismic waves using this source. Seismic recorders used were 96 channels with interval between receivers was 10 meters. Findings showed that the deepest reflection can be seen around 450 millisecond or approximately 400 meters. To sum up, the device is work well and is able to produce good quality of seismic sources. The prototype can also meet design criteria that are repeatability, portability, economical and environmetal friendly. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The Lembang fault considering vulnerable because of the site is near downtown Bandung. The west Lembang segment is the rural area of Cibodas. The two opinions is emerging, become normal fault or strike slip fault, based on recent earthquake (2010 onward). The geology data show the structure is observed by the outstanding topographic extended about 20 km, with volcanic rock very dominant. The seismology data is analysed for year 2011 in Mw less than 3, and classical fault plane solution is obtained. The gravity data is better acquired than 0.1 mGal, with elevation precision better than 60 cm. The upward Continuation, and second vertical derivative, is applied on data, as well as modelling 2.5D. The section is presenting in one section only, while data is getting in larger area. The seismology data show mostly for event is strike slip although in several parts having event normal. The gravity data is not ideal as graben like structure but rather locally low about 10 mGal amplitude. The combining the two methods suggested the slip zone or sag pond is more possible for the local anomaly. Besides, the Lembang fault is extended toward north rather to west or south. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

We present a shear-velocity model for the Tangkuban Parahu Volcano (TPV) using ambient seismic noise tomography. We used data from a three-month 55-temporary netwok deployed between October 2021 and February 2022. We cross-correlated the vertical components at each station to extract an empirical Green's function, to generate group velocity maps within the periodicity range of 1 to 6.5 s. We then construct a three-dimensional model of shear-wave velocity to a depth of 5 km below the summit. Our analysis revealed distinct patterns of high and low velocity values, associated with the presence of the old Sunda caldera, unmapped local structures, and surface geothermal manifestation around TPV. We identified low velocity zones indicative of shallow reservoirs and pathways for magma migration from the subsurface to surface crater. Additionally, high velocity zones observed, correspond to cooled magmatic bodies.

Krakatau is one of the volcano in Indonesia which has the destructive paroxysmal eruption. Eruption on 1883 was estimated had VEI of 6. The eruption was recorded as one among some most violent volcanic eruption event in the world. Gravity method is one of the geophysical methods that could delineate the subsurface structure base on density variation. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to reconstruct the 3D subsurface structure of the Krakatau volcano especially the approximate location and dimension of the magma chamber. The subsurface model of Krakatau was done by 3D modelling using residual anomaly map. In order to develop the status of magma chamber model, the available information on the geological map of Krakatau and surrounding area was used. Besides that, some information relative to the volcano such as the information derived from earthquake wave attenuation were utilized. The result of the study shows that position its volcano magma chamber is not directly vertical or oblique under the volcano crater and it has multiple chambers which trending northwest-southeast. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Java Island is highly active tectonic zone and also has a complex geological system as a result of Indo-Australian plate that subducted under the Eurasian plate. This complexity produces many large and destructive earthquakes. Moreover, Java is a most densely populated region in Indonesia. The precise earthquake location can define and evaluate the seismic hazard in the area. In this study, we determined hypocenter location around the central and east Java region by using a non-linear method. We manually picked P-and S-wave arrival time recorded by BMKG network for the time period of 2009 to 2017. We used the minimum 1D seismic velocity model of ak135 to locate the events. We used some criteria for the determination of event location including (i) at least recorded by 4 station which has clear onset P and S arrival, and (ii) has magnitude (MW) > 3. The seismicity in the study area is controlled by subduction and many active faults distributed along the Java Island, also clustered in several areas such as Kendeng thrust, Opak river fault, Kebumen, Banyuwangi, and others. The result of this study indicates the accurately main shallow seismicity zones in central and eastern part of Java region, and also confirm the presence of active inland faults. As further studies, we will conduct 1D velocity modeling and relocate the hypocenters using an updated local 1D velocity model beneath the study area. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Luk Ulo Melange Complex is a Pre-Tertiary rock formation consisting of various lithological background and complicated geological structure. Located in Northern Kebumen Regency, this rock is originally interpreted as products of tectonic process caused by paleo-subduction between Indian Oceanic Plate beneath Eurasian Plate in Cretaceous age. According to previous study on geological surface investigation shows that the melange complex is tectonically overlain by Tertiary sedimentary formation. On the contrary, geophysical study of the subsurface condition of the area is still under discussion due to limited of measured data. In order to obtain detailed subsurface image, gravity profiling was measured and interpreted across both Tertiary and pre-Tertiary rock. Frequency domain filter and designed moving average filter were used to separate residual and regional anomaly. The results denote gravity value of residual anomaly varying from -5 to +5 mGal, while regional anomaly is ranging from 150-180 mGal respectively. The preliminary interpretation was developed by taking into account the geological information and also the data that was collected during field campaign. Overall, high gravity anomaly is interpreted as diabase intrusion in the middle of research area. Meanwhile, low gravity anomaly indicated clay rich rock material related to matrix content of Luk-Ulo Melange Complex in the northern area. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Research on the Palu earthquake in the period of August to October 2018 has been carried out in the Palu Koro Fault (PKF) zone with a hypocenter of 5-20 km. This study aims to determine the fractal dimensions of these earthquakes based on the relationship between logarithmic frequency and earthquake magnitude correlation introduced by Gutenberg-Richter. Statistical correlation between logarithmic frequency and earthquake magnitude was calculated using the inversion approach. Based on the calculation results obtained fractal dimension value of 1.0378, which describes the seismicity pattern at a depth of 5-20 km. It indicates that the earthquakes triggered by the movement in rupture segments which seen as points along the PKF zone. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

CO2 injection into the hydrocarbon reservoir affects the subsurface mechanics and hydraulic condition. The injection has to be performed in a way that there will be no reservoir and/or top seal failure. In such case, a simulation of the injected fluid propagation needs to be performed to see its possible impact to the top seal and existing major faults. We use finite element method to perform this injection simulation. In this research, we use open source software Finite Element Heat and Mass Transfer Code (FEHM) to simulate CO2 injection processes into reservoir. Subsurface geological model was constructed in a dimension of 3000 m (easting) x 3000 m (northing) x 2000 m (vertical). Vertically, it consists of four layers which represent upper layer (400 m), top seal (200 m), reservoir (900 m), and basement (500m). The grid around the reservoir rocks is refined to give more detail results. The open hole injection is set at 850 - 890 m depth, 1500 m easting and 1500 m northing. The material is assumed to be isotropic. The initial pressure and temperature increase as a function of depth with a pressure gradient of 0.00981 MPa/m and a temperature gradient of 0.025 degrees C/m. A vertical fault is modelled at 600 m eastern to the injection well. Injection process is carried out with 6 kg/s of CO2 injection with simulation time for ten years to see its impact to the fault. A vertical fault is The modelling results show that the CO2 injection will not reactivate the fault at 10 years. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.
