Optimization of Biomass-Fueled Vertical Corn Drying: Efficiency, Energy Balance, and Sustainability

This study investigates the thermal performance and energy efficiency of a biomass-fueled vertical dryer utilizing candlenut shell biomass for corn drying. The objective is to evaluate drying behavior under continuous and discontinuous operation modes at different temperature settings. A custom-built dryer was developed and tested at 45°C, 50°C, and 55°C, and energy input, drying time, and efficiency were recorded. Statistical analyses, including paired t-tests, were conducted to examine the significance of operational differences. Results show that continuous drying at 50°C and 55°C significantly improves drying efficiency, reaching above 66%, and reduces drying time compared to discontinuous modes. Candlenut shells performed well as a renewable fuel, offering stable combustion and minimal ash production, outperforming traditional fuels such as rice husks and corn cobs in similar drying conditions. Energy analyses indicated balanced energy use, while future work should address post-drying quality characteristics and automation. These findings suggest that candlenut shells are a viable, sustainable alternative for efficient post-harvest thermal processing, particularly in rural agro-industrial settings.

In machining process, the cutting temperature and cutting force produced is an important parameter need to be control or reduce. The cutting temperature and cutting force will effected the tool life thus effected the tool cost. Metalworking fluids are essential coolants and lubricants used in material removal and deformation processes to improve manufacturing *** Research will look the effect of cutting speed to specific cutting energy in workpiece on Turning Process using SCCO2 as the coolant. The results of the analysis on this study will compare the results from simulations using Autodesk Software Simulation of mechanical 2016 with the results of the journal as a reference. From theoretical calculations, the cutting forces decrease while the cutting speeds increase. Then the specific cutting energy will decrease with the increase of cutting speed. The specific cutting energy is. 1,805 J/mm3 to cutting speed 50 m/min, 1,765 J/mm3 to cutting speed 65 m/min and 1,733 J/mm3 to cutting speed 80 m/min [8]. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The purpose of this study is to modify the water pipe in the mini boiler into a spiral pipe, with a pipe length of 196.8 cm. With the aim of increasing the efficiency and temperature produced by mini boilers. In addition, it is also to determine the shape and length of the pipe that is better for use in mini boilers. The results of the test show the temperature rise that passes through the superheater pipe. In the spiral pipe model there is a temperature increase of 10.92 °C, with a steam inlet temperature of 277.62 °C. While the temperature of steam coming out of the superheater pipe is 288.54°C. This shows a temperature increase of 16.6°C, with a superheater pipe steam temperature of 267.4 °C and a steam temperature of 284 °C from the previous pipe model. Testing for heating water, until it becomes steam in the mini boiler is carried out for 90 *** temperature value of the spiral pipe model is better than the previous pipe model. And the efficiency value obtained in the mini boiler using the spiral pipe is 15.055%, while in the previous study only 5.73%. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Polymer-based dampening layer application to improve the operating shock tolerance of hard disk drive

This paper discusses a passive vibration control method to improve the shock tolerance of hard disk drives (HDDs) in operating condition (op-shock tolerance). Past works in improving the HDDs’ op-shock tolerance includes (i) parking the head when shock is detected, (ii) installing a lift-off limiter, (iii) structural modification of the suspension, and (iv) installing an external vibration isolation. Methods (i) and (iv) have practical issues, method (ii) works only on single shock direction, and method (iii) requires major engineering design/manufacturing work. Compared to these works, this paper proposes a method which has no practical issues and without requiring major engineering design/manufacturing work. The proposed method is to apply a polymer-based dampening layer on the backside of the baseplate with the purpose of increasing the damping ratio of the 1st bending mode of the baseplate. The location of the dampening layer on the baseplate is first determined by modal analysis and then fine-tuned by non-op-shock tests. The op-shock tolerance improvement is confirmed by op-shock tests where 2.5″ HDD with the dampening layer on the baseplate can withstand a 300G 0.5-ms shock without failure while unmodified HDD can only withstand 250G 0.5-ms shock without failure. © 2022, The Author(s).

Prospective area of Solok geothermal lies in step over transtensional between two segments, Suliti and Siulak, Sumatra faults. Geological structure in this prospect area shows structural pattern controlled by "oblique divergent strike-slip fault system" (releasing bend) as a proceed of embraced movement from Sumatra fault and establishes "dilation zone" between those two segments, forming negative flower structure in direction of NW-SE and N-S. The pattern of geological structure is predicted to control the availability of solok geothermal system which in this case related to presence of surface manifestation. The electric vehicle showcases a promising development in the future. Recently, the most reliable power storage for such a system is a Li-ion battery. The performance of this battery, however, relies on the thermal management system implemented on the vehicle. Albeit having a sufficient performance for the current state of an electric vehicle, enhancement is necessary to make sure that the future requirement is within the remit of the cooling system. One of the simple but powerful enhancements is by employing a mini-channel cold plate. In this study, the performance of a serpentine mini-channel cold plate in various Reynolds numbers (Re) was investigated experimentally. The results illustrate a better mean of cooling of high Re flow, indicated by the lower surface temperature and higher heat transfer coefficient up to 2.1 W/m2·K. Additionally, the performance was then compared to the pressure drop to represent the efficiency of the pumping power requirement of such a system. The highest h/ΔP is observed at Re = 2130.33 which correspond to the mass flow rate of 0.5 LPM. It was found that although having a higher heat transfer coefficient, the efficiency is much lower due to pressure drop rise as the mass flow rate increases.

The needs of having strong and light material for many construction is increasing. Aluminum is one of materials that fulfill this requirement with other advantages such as corrosion resistant and easily formed. Generally, hardness of aluminum and its alloys is lower than ferrous metal such as iron and steel. Aluminum hardness improvement can be conducted by heat treatment namely artificial aging. Artificial aging in aluminum alloy type 2024 T3 in this study was conducted in 2 phases that is solution treatment in 500 °C for 1 hour and continued with artificial aging process in 180 °C by holding time 2, 4 and 6 hours. From the conducted research, it was found that there was hardness improvement on aluminum type 2024 T3 in line with the increasing of aging time. The gained microstructure was getting smooth which means the precipitation hardening process was getting perfect. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The aim of Nickel-Tungsten coatings on the material of carbon steel is to improve the wear resistance of the material. However, with the elevated contact temperature due to friction force in the surface area of sliding may alter the wear resistance of Nickel-Tungsten layers. If the elevated temperature is quite high to reduce the hardness performance of Nickel-Tungsten layers, the layers may be degraded more quickly. In this work, Nickel-Tungsten was deposited on the surface of medium carbon steel in the process of flame powder spray coating with layer thickness of about 0.2 mm. The wear test was conducted using linear reciprocating ball-on-plat with varying surface temperature of about 30°C up to about 250°C. The wear rate and wear mechanism of Nickel-Tungsten layer is investigated. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This investigative research aims to convert urban non-organic waste fuels such as plastic waste into energy using fixed bed pyrolysis technology. Pyrolysis fixed bed (PFB) is one of the most efficient technologies for converting various types of undegradable solid waste into thermal energy and liquid fuels with high efficiency. The study was conducted on a lab-scale PFB reactor with dimensions of 15 cm and 55 cm in diameter and bed height respectively. The reactor is equipped with a cooling and decomposition system to accommodate liquid and gas products. Reactor temperature variations using an external heater were tested and quartz sands were selected as a bed material to improve the temperature function of the PFB reactor so as the maximum quality and quantity of liquid product were obtained. The fuel properties of the derived oil were tested including their physical properties, calorific value, elemental measurement (CHNOS) analysis. The results of the study showed that the increase in temperature resulted in an increased pyrolysis performance which was indicated by the increased volume and liquid caloric value. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

High performance polysulfone (PSf) membrane has been prepared for treating of batik palembang wastewater. Many investigations attempted the use of polysulfone (PSf) membranes to filtrate dilute contaminant in textile wastewater. The matrix membrane is a mixture of PSf which is produced by adding inorganic materials to obtain a polymer that functions to manufacture the membrane by increasing hydrophilicity and impurity resistance. MMM were fabricated from a dope solution containing PSf/LiCl/DMF at different additives composition. Antifouling properties of membranes could be enhance with 0.0 - 10 wt.% LiCl that has been added into dope solution. Pure water permeation flux analysis (PWP), AFM and FESEM. From the results of research on FESEM, the PSf / LiCL membrane showed a fairly symmetrical cross-sectional structure containing two layers. The layers of the tiny finger-like structure on the edge of the perforated fibers and the holes like the larger fingers are mixed with the macrovoid layer in the middle section. PWP flux is not proportional to mean rough outer surface but higher water permeation. Therefore, PSf/LiCl exhibited a better performance that resulted a much lower fouling tendency than the naked membrane in batik Palembang wastewater treatment. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
