Groundwater modeling in nickel mining of Langgikima, North Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi

Nickel mining activities with an open-pit mining system (surface mining) are considered as activities that have an impact on environmental damage. One issue is the impacts on groundwater. Therefore, accurate groundwater flow modeling is significant for the prevention and control of potential environmental damage. The research objectives were to build a conceptual model of the hydrogeology of the groundwater system using numerical methods, to calibrate the model by testing the Parameter Sensitivity Analysis (PSA), and to analyze the pattern of groundwater flow in the study area. The results showed that the aquifer system in the study area is a semi-unconfined aquifer. The lithology of the aquifer layer is dominated by a mixture of clay, silt, sand, gravel, and boulder. Hydraulic conductivities of aquifer layers were 5×10-6 m/sec while the conductivities of the aquitards 1 and 2 were 1.4×10−7 m/sec, 5×10−8 m/sec. Additionally, the recharge of the modeled area was 1,253.35 mm/year. The results of the sensitivity analysis of the model are most sensitive to the decrease in hydraulic conductivity in ultramafic rocks. In contrast the recharge parameter, the model is most sensitive to the addition of recharge values. The groundwater flow pattern generally from the west to the east to the northeast part of the research area.

Krakatau is one of the volcano in Indonesia which has the destructive paroxysmal eruption. Eruption on 1883 was estimated had VEI of 6. The eruption was recorded as one among some most violent volcanic eruption event in the world. Gravity method is one of the geophysical methods that could delineate the subsurface structure base on density variation. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to reconstruct the 3D subsurface structure of the Krakatau volcano especially the approximate location and dimension of the magma chamber. The subsurface model of Krakatau was done by 3D modelling using residual anomaly map. In order to develop the status of magma chamber model, the available information on the geological map of Krakatau and surrounding area was used. Besides that, some information relative to the volcano such as the information derived from earthquake wave attenuation were utilized. The result of the study shows that position its volcano magma chamber is not directly vertical or oblique under the volcano crater and it has multiple chambers which trending northwest-southeast. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Effect of Improvement of Temperature and Gas Amount on Nitrogen Flooding

Oil and natural gas are energy resources with high demand, so it is very important to implement enhanced oil recovery technology in old fields to obtain optimum oil production. The enhanced oil recovery technology that will be discussed on this occasion is more specifically related to the gas flooding method, namely nitrogen flooding. Nitrogen flooding is currently used more often as an alternative to CO2 flooding. However, the limitation of this method is that it is only effective when used in a field with a high depth, because it requires a constant high pressure and temperature so that this gas can dissolve into the reservoir fluid. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a more in-depth study of the nitrogen flooding method, so that its application can get optimal, efficient, and economical results. The results of laboratory research were carried out to study the displacement of crude oil using the high pressure nitrogen injection method. It aims to study the effect of temperature and GOR on crude oil recovery and the solubility process in high pressure nitrogen injection. In addition, the effectiveness of nitrogen injection after water flooding, and the effect of propane slug driven by nitrogen injection were also analyzed. There are nine types of experiments carried out using crude oil 42.3° API which is recombined with natural gas. This experiment used two temperatures, 70° F and 120° F, and three GORs, namely 575 scf/stb, 400 scf/stb, and 200 scf/stb. The reservoir model used was a stainless steel tube 125 feet long and 0.435 inches in diameter, packed with consolidated sand to provide an average permeability of 910 mD. The recovery factor in nitrogen injection is influenced by the gas content in the system. If the gas content is high, then nitrogen injection will result in a higher oil recovery compared to conditions where the gas content is low.

Java Island is highly active tectonic zone and also has a complex geological system as a result of Indo-Australian plate that subducted under the Eurasian plate. This complexity produces many large and destructive earthquakes. Moreover, Java is a most densely populated region in Indonesia. The precise earthquake location can define and evaluate the seismic hazard in the area. In this study, we determined hypocenter location around the central and east Java region by using a non-linear method. We manually picked P-and S-wave arrival time recorded by BMKG network for the time period of 2009 to 2017. We used the minimum 1D seismic velocity model of ak135 to locate the events. We used some criteria for the determination of event location including (i) at least recorded by 4 station which has clear onset P and S arrival, and (ii) has magnitude (MW) > 3. The seismicity in the study area is controlled by subduction and many active faults distributed along the Java Island, also clustered in several areas such as Kendeng thrust, Opak river fault, Kebumen, Banyuwangi, and others. The result of this study indicates the accurately main shallow seismicity zones in central and eastern part of Java region, and also confirm the presence of active inland faults. As further studies, we will conduct 1D velocity modeling and relocate the hypocenters using an updated local 1D velocity model beneath the study area. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Unlocking gold recovery: Optimizing leaching process from tailing sluice boxes with HCl pretreatment and cyanide concentration variations

Tailing sluice box still contains 4.96 gpt of gold. Samples were taken for XRD and SEM-EDX testing. The XRD test results show that quartz is the dominant mineral, followed by clay and feldspar. Quartz mineral content is 46.87%, clay mineral content is 17.76% and feldspar mineral content is 27.80%. The clay mineral content which tends to be high affects the leaching process which makes the reaction take longer. The results of the diagnostic leach test using HCl solution and cyanide solution resulted in 39% Au gain. The results of the HCl pretreatment on the tailings grain size -150, -200, and -270 mesh got Au gain percentage of 23.6%, 29.6%, 44%. Tailings leaching with variations in cyanide concentrations of 500 ppm, 750 ppm and 1000 ppm resulted in gold recovery of 0.8%, 5.8%, and 7.8%. The highest gold gain was at - 270mesh size and 1000ppm cyanide concentration with 72 hours leaching time.

Seismic tomography is a method that is widely applied to obtain seismic velocity structures below the surface. This method is applied to various cases, from global to regional scales, as well as local scales such as in the case of volcanoes, geothermal areas and underground mining. Until now, the grid form that is still widely used is the regular grid form. With a very rigid grid shape, it will be more difficult and inflexible to model the geometry of certain geological models that are very varied, even though mathematically there is no reason to avoid certain grid shapes and sizes. In order to minimize the uncertainty of the subsurface geological model grid, we developed a script to perform seismic tomography where the shape and size of the grid can be made irregular based on the Voronoi diagram. The number of grids in the inversion process can also adaptively increase or decrease based on the number of the raypath data. We then applied it to the synthetic crosshole tomography data and compared the results with the regular grid. With the irregular shape and size of the grid, better inversion results are obtained and are more suitable with the synthetic model.

Luk Ulo Melange Complex is a Pre-Tertiary rock formation consisting of various lithological background and complicated geological structure. Located in Northern Kebumen Regency, this rock is originally interpreted as products of tectonic process caused by paleo-subduction between Indian Oceanic Plate beneath Eurasian Plate in Cretaceous age. According to previous study on geological surface investigation shows that the melange complex is tectonically overlain by Tertiary sedimentary formation. On the contrary, geophysical study of the subsurface condition of the area is still under discussion due to limited of measured data. In order to obtain detailed subsurface image, gravity profiling was measured and interpreted across both Tertiary and pre-Tertiary rock. Frequency domain filter and designed moving average filter were used to separate residual and regional anomaly. The results denote gravity value of residual anomaly varying from -5 to +5 mGal, while regional anomaly is ranging from 150-180 mGal respectively. The preliminary interpretation was developed by taking into account the geological information and also the data that was collected during field campaign. Overall, high gravity anomaly is interpreted as diabase intrusion in the middle of research area. Meanwhile, low gravity anomaly indicated clay rich rock material related to matrix content of Luk-Ulo Melange Complex in the northern area. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

When sewage from manganese washing is disposed of in plains or bodies of water, pollutant waste may be scattered around the area and can cause environmental pollution. Pollution by wastewater from manganese washing results in a decrease in water quality because it contains large amounts of heavy metal elements that are harmful to health, such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). Law No.3 of 2020 concerning Amendment to Law No.4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal mining, emphasizes that all mining business operators are required to carry out good mining practices. Wastewater from manganese washing before flowing out into the plains or surrounding water bodies is first collected in settling ponds for treatment later the released water will be free from pollutants and meet the specified quality standards. The purpose of this study is to analyze the content of heavy metals iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn), and their handling in a manganese washing settling pond. The method used in this study is water sampling, laboratory testing using the AAS method (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry), and data analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, the content of heavy metals iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in the wastewater from manganese washing results exceeds the quality standards stipulated based on PP. No. 82 of 2001. Handling of heavy metal content that exceeds quality standards uses an adsorption method with zeolite activation media. The results of the activation zeolite showed that the content of heavy metals contained in the manganese washing wastewater decreased.

The geochemical method is one of the methods used to know the characteristics of hot spring, and the estimation of subsurface temperature or geothermal reservoir. Analysis of chemical properties of hot springs through thermal chemistry by using trilinear diagram. The methods used are literature study and field observations such as mapping the distribution of hot water spring, titrimetric laboratory analysis, gravimetric, and spectrophotometer for the analysis of hot water spring through the geochemical approach in determining the type of hot water spring. The average temperature of 480C and pH of 7,85, clear color, smelled sulfur and taste salty. The result on the percentage value of the ion content in the hot springs samples that have been analyzed their chemical content, especially the anion content of CI, SO42−, and HCO3− CO32− indicates that hot spring type of Barasanga is a type of chloride. This is indicated by the large chloride ion content ranging from 85.486% to 90.627%.

mining sector in the economic structure of South Kalimantan Province: direct and indirect impacts

Supporting sectors for sustainable economic development in a region can have a direct impact on GRDP and indirectly have an impact through strong backward and forward linkage to other economic sectors. Analysis of backward and forward linkages can be performed using input-output tables that describe the role of each sector in the regional economy. The abundance of coal resources in South Kalimantan Province makes the mining sector the largest contributor to GRDP. Coal is an export commodity that has a very large percentage of the total regional export value. The enormous impact on GRDP, both in terms of business fields and final demand, is not accompanied by strong linkages to other economic sectors. The existence of the mining sector is unable to stimulate production growth in the backward sector and is unable to fulfill the final demand of the forward sector. Restrictions on coal exports to fulfill domestic energy resource needs are able to make the mining sector of South Kalimantan Province a key sector to support sustainable regional economic development.
