Dry-season sources of riverine sediment from the tropical mixed urban-agricultural watershed of the Mun River Basin in northeastern Thailand

Northeastern(NE) Thailand is well recognized as the land for rice cropping and consequently, it is potentially contaminated with chemicals from soil fertilization, pest/weed control, and urban *** Mun River basin in NE Thailand principally is comprised of rice paddies and sedimentation in the river has been pronounced, but the studies on sediment source identification are limited. The current study aims to identify sediment sources in the Mun River basin and discuss possible impacts on ecosystems attributed to exposure to polluted sediment. The assessment relies upon physicochemical properties and heavy metal contents(iron(Fe), manganese(Mn), copper(Cu), chromium(Cr), nickel(Ni),and Zinc(Zn)) in the fine-grained sediment(<63 μm) taken from the Mun River basin and the Chi River in the dry season of 2020-2021. The findings revealed that the heavy metals in the sediment had not accumulated to levels of concern. Most sediment was from natural sources, including Fe-and Mn-rich sediment, Cr-dominant sediment, and Ni-and Cu-rich sediment. Fe-and Zn-rich sediment was, however, found in the urban watershed of Lam Ta Klong, and it could originate from mixed urban sources. Ferich sediment was predominant in the Mun River basin, which and could be a significant sink and source of toxic elements from agricultural and urban discharges. It is suggested that the toxic compounds in the sediment should be consistently monitored, whereas ecological and health risk assessment should be focused on the mobile forms.

Assessing the impact of varying combined fertilizer rates on the yields of potato varieties in central Ethiopia

The main constraints to potato productivity in the study area are low soil fertility and insufficient research-based guidance on the use of blended NPSB fertilizer across various potato varieties. Therefore, the experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of varying rates of combined fertilizer on the yield components and traits associated with tuber yield in different potato varieties and computes the cost-benefit ratio of NPSB fertilizer rates for potato production in Walmara District. The study involved six (0, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kgha⁻¹) NPSB fertilizer levels combined with three potato varieties, arranged in a factorial design with a randomized complete block setup, and each treatment was replicated three times. The outcomes indicated that, except for stem number, the interaction between NPSB fertilizer and potato varieties had a significant impact on all the tested parameters of potatoes. Belete variety resulted in a higher marketable tuber yield (279.48%) and yields of total tuber (223.23%) in 250 NPSB kg ha⁻¹ fertilization than without NPSB fertilizer. Based on partial budget analysis, the highest 254, 741 net benefits of Birr per ha with a 7684.2% return of marginal rate were observed from the Belete variety with the application of 250 kg ha⁻¹NPSB. Additionally, the Gudane variety with 300 kg ha⁻¹ NPSB fertilization had the highest net benefit with a reasonable marginal rate of return (2780%). Therefore, the tentative recommendation of this research was made toward the Belete variety with 250 kg ha⁻¹ NPSB and as a second option Gudane variety with 300 NPSB ha⁻¹ kg fertilization. © The Author(s) under exclusive licence to Society for Plant Research 2025.

As population size grows over time, staple food production also needs to keep up with increased annual demands. In Indonesia, the agricultural sector applies intensification and extensification to maximize rice productivity. However, farm extensification can instead decline productivity, should it sprawl into marginal lands like the study area that has been affected by sea-level rise impact, i.e., surface saltwater intrusion. Therefore, this study set out to differentiate paddies into segments affected and unaffected by salinity based on discernible variation in rice growth stages. These stages were determined using a vegetation index, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), calculated from time-series Sentinel-2 L2A+B image data from 2015 until 2020. The resulting temporal NDVI showed two cropping patterns year-round but with different planting times. In salinity-unaffected paddy segments, farmers began the inundation-transplanting stage in late March and ended the cropping season with fallow in August. Meanwhile, in salinity-affected segments, the cropping stages were the opposite: inundation in early April and fallow in early September. The measurable impact of salinity was apparent at the vegetative-generative stage, where salinity-affected paddies had the highest NDVI of 0.64-0.65, whereas those unaffected had the highest NDVI of 0.7-0.75. These index values indicate an impaired rice growth rate due to salinity effects. Compared with the field-measured data, the NDVI showed 85% accuracy, with a Kappa coefficient of 0.87. Meanwhile, the NDVI-EC correlation test produced R-values of 63-85%. Overall, this research has confirmed that remote sensing image and technology can acquire variable data that explain salinity effects on coastal paddies. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Biomarkers of heavy metals pollution in mangrove ecosystems: Comparative assessment in industrial impact and conservation zones

Heavy metal contamination from industrial activities in coastal regions can lead to pollution in mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves produce antioxidant compounds to mitigate the impact of free radicals. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cu and antioxidant activity in Avicennia alba and Excoecaria agallocha mangroves from areas affected by industrial activities and conservation areas, Banyuasin, South Sumatra, Indonesia. This study was conducted in September 2023 with sampling locations in the Payung Island area and the Barong River conservation area, Berbak Sembilang National Park. The samples taken included sediment and mangrove leaves. The concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cu was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. Antioxidant activity test using the DPPH test, total phenol using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and phytochemical profile screening using GCMS. Statistical analysis of the correlation between antioxidant activity and heavy metal concentration using the Pearson correlation. The results showed that the highest concentration of heavy metals in sediment and mangrove leaves was found in the area affected by industrial activity, with a range of Pb values of 0.67 ± 0.16–18.70 ± 0.48 mg/kg and Cu values of 3.39 ± 0.20–6.07 ± 0.37 mg / kg. The results of sediment pollution assessment for heavy metals Pb and Cu at Igeo < 0 indicates uncontaminated, 1 < Cf < 3 indicates low contamination, and PLI 0–2 indicates not polluted. While the results of heavy metal bioaccumulation in leaves were BCF < 1, indicates low bioaccumulation. E. agallocha leaves from the Pulau Payung area showed very strong antioxidant activity of 21.63 μg/ml, and the highest total phenol content reached 398.80 mg GAE/g. Analysis of compounds with the highest antioxidant activity identified the presence of esters, aldehydes, alcohols, fatty acids, glycosides, flavonoids, terpenoids, and steroids. During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Excellence, potential, and good prospects make palm oil plantations grow rapidly. Another underlying consideration is the important and strategic role as a activator nor accelerator in development and economy. environmental and social issues become challenging in development's sector, especially in the development of sustainable oil palm plantations. Since the implementations of the certification system for sustainable palm oil plantation's in 2011 and was further clarified in Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture No. 11 of 2015 about Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Certification System (ISPO), the Indonesian Government requires companies to produce palm oil sustainably. This research aims to analysis on the performance of oil palm plantations in environmental management based on ISPO principles and criteria. Research on several palm oil plantations of South Sumetera Province located in Musi Banyuasin Regency. Methods were used by collecting primary data through interviews and secondary data was obtained from data reviews such as company literature. The results of the analysis showed that the effectiveness of policy implementation through the fulfillment of environmental policy components can be fulfilled by most of companies. Meanwhile, in some cases, such as online reporting of land fires has not been fulfilled yet. © 2021 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Synthesis of carbon dots (c-dots) from vechile waste-oil is one of the alternatives for reducing the burden of environmental pollution. This study aimed to develop a green and economical strategy to produce C-dots by using motor oil waste. C-dots were synthesized by heating motor oil waste in the various percentage of sulfuric acid solution (95, 70, 30, and 0% H2SO4). The synthesized C-dot was characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The result showed that the carbon dot produces blue color at 365 nm of UV light. This color was attributed to the oxidation of chemical content in motor oil waste. Therefore, four peaks were obtained at 203 nm, 204 nm, 215 nm, and 210 nm for all samples. Based on FT-IR spectra, the most prominent sample difference was observed at peak 1630 cm-1. The characteristic band of the carbonyl group was identified at the c-dot concentration (70 and 95%) but was not observed in the c-dot concentration (0 and 30%). The presence of carbonyl groups caused the fluorescent color to gradually shift from dark blue to light blue. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
