Techno-economic analysis of green hydrogen production by a floating solar photovoltaic system for industrial decarbonization

This study proposes a conceptual design of green hydrogen production via proton exchange membrane electrolysis powered by a floating solar photovoltaic *** system contributes to industrial decarbonization in which hydrogen blending with natural gas is proposed as an approach to smooth the energy *** proposed design addresses the challenge of supplying a continuous flow-rate of green hydrogen,which is typically demanded by industrial end *** study particularly considers a realistic area required for the installation of a floating solar photovoltaic *** enable the green hydrogen production of 7.5 million standard cubic feet per day,the required structure includes the floating solar photovoltaic system and Li-ion batteries with the nominal capacities of 518.4 megawatts and 780.8 *** is equivalent to the requirement for 1524765 photovoltaic modules and 3718 Li-ion *** assessment confirms the technical viability of the proposed concept of green hydrogen production,transportation and *** the present commercialization is hindered by economics due to a high green hydrogen production cost of USD 26.95 per kg,this green hydrogen pathway is expected to be competitive with grey hydrogen produced via coal gasification and via natural gas steam reforming by 2043 and 2047,respectively.

Smartphones have attracted attention in the structural health monitoring community due to their embedded multisensory platforms suitable for crowdsourcing innovation. Despite their advantages, smartphone sensors are originally designed for user utility rather than technical engineering applications (e.g. vibration analysis and modal identification). Sampling jitter is among those problems adversely influencing smartphone performance as a scientific device that can be used for characterising civil infrastructure dynamic characteristics. With inconsistencies in the sampling period due to jitter effects, the identified modal frequencies of a structure can deviate from the actual value, which is artificially introduced by smartphone clock errors. In this study, the authors formulate the statistical characteristics of the smartphone sampling period through kernel distribution and apply a digital reconstruction remedy to the sampling jitter problem. Through introductory simulations of a sine wave and physical implementations through shaking table tests equipped with smartphones, the efficiency of kernel distribution diagnosis and the signal-reconstruction remedy is presented. Following the simulation and laboratory applications, the proposed techniques are applied to vibration monitoring of a steel pedestrian bridge in terms of the auto power spectral density and short-time Fourier transform of single-output signals. The results show successful rehabilitation of accelerometer data from smartphones, removing jitter-induced errors to a significant extent and accordingly improving the identification accuracy currently in a single-output setting. © 2023 Emerald Publishing Limited: All rights reserved.

This paper presents the design and the development of multi-string I-V curve tracer for photovoltaic (PV) strings. It uses a capacitive load and double pole relay to measure the I-V characteristics of a multiple PV strings simultaneously. The prototype is developed using a PIC18F4550 micro-controller and a graphical user interface GUI designed using Microsoft's Visual Studio software. The I-V characteristics of the PV string are displayed on LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and computer. The performance and functionality of the proposed I-V curve tracer have been tested using four PV strings. The experimental test shows that the proposed I-V tracer can measure and display the I-V characteristic of each PV string smoothly in the normal and shading conditions. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. The implementation of carbon capture and storage in the petrochemical industry is one of the means of *** research focuses on a comprehensive technical analysis of the deployment of post-combustion carbon capture and storage based on monoethanolamine absorption in the petrochemical *** olefin complex petrochemical industry in Tuban,Indonesia,is the basis for the analysis,which includes a steam cracker,polyethylene,polypropylene,and raw pyrolysis gasoline hydrotreating units,with capacities of 1000,940,600,and 570 kilotons/year,*** total energy consumption is about 16024.53 GJ/h,and the CO_(2) emissions are about 1.6 megatons/*** on these plant systems,comprehensive technical analyses of the implementation of carbon capture and storage in that industry were performed using Aspen HYSYS®simulation *** analysis was carried out to determine the total CO_(2) captured,energy intensity,monoethanolamine consumption,and net CO_(2) captured in various scenarios based on the number of absorber column stages,absorption pressure,and desorption *** CO_(2) storage site is about 100 km away and is transported by an onshore pipeline with a supercritical phase of CO_(2).The optimal net CO_(2) capture value is achieved by setting up a 50-stage absorber column with a pressure of 1 barg and a temperature of 110℃ at the top of the desorber column,resulting in a CO_(2) capture yield of 86.4%and an energy intensity of 12.6 GJ/ton CO_(2).Under these conditions,the net CO_(2) captured in the scenario based on gas power plants’electricity is 0.225 megatons/year,while in the scenario based on gas power plants incorporating 30%biomass electricity,it is 0.544 megatons/*** increased use of renewable energy in carbon capture and storage facilities,more net CO_(2) is *** study can be applied to various cases of post-combustion carbon capture and storage implementation in the industrial sector,especially in the

Extensive research efforts are currently devoted to developing and improving conventional technologies for water treatment. Membrane-based water treatment technologies are among the most preferred options due to their commercial success, simple operation, low energy and space requirements, and high separation efficiency. Despite the advances made in membrane-based technologies, fouling remains a critical challenge. Fouling occurs upon the accumulation of unwanted impurities on the membrane surface and within the membrane pores which results in a significant decline in the membrane permeate flux. To alleviate the operational challenges from fouling, surface modification to develop antifouling membranes appears to be an effective technique. A comprehensive review of the surface modification techniques for the development of antifouling membranes is provided in this paper. Chemical surface modification techniques (grafting and plasma treatment), physical modification techniques (blending, coating, adsorption, and thermal treatment), and combined physical and chemical modification techniques have been discussed. Moreover, the challenges related to surface modification and the future research directions are addressed.

This study reports on the fabrication and characterization of a copper oxide (CuO)-based photoactive cell. Copper was thermally evaporated onto two substrates and post-treated using chemical and thermal treatments to obtain different semiconducting types of CuO. Absorption measurements were conducted to obtain the bandgaps of CuO, which were found to be 1.51 eV and 1.21 eV, for the chemically and thermally treated CuO, respectively. Finally, a chronoamperometry test was conducted to confirm the photoresponse of the cell, which showed a doubling of output current values under light conditions compared to dark conditions. © 2023 IEEE.

Global warming and climate change have become pressing environmental challenges, primarily caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, disrupting the natural balance of radiation and leading to rising global temperatures. The consequences of global warming include more frequent and severe heatwaves, changes in precipitation patterns, and increased risks of urban flooding. This research focuses on sustainable stormwater management as a strategy to mitigate urban flooding and adapt to climate change. The study area is the city of Güzelyurt in Northern Cyprus, characterized by a flat topography and limited stormwater infrastructure. The existing stormwater network is insufficient and prone to failures during rainfall events. The research compares the effectiveness and efficiency of two approaches: a traditional approach that involves resizing conduits, and a sustainable approach that implements Low-Impact Development (LID) strategies. LID strategies aim to mimic natural hydrological processes and include measures such as green infrastructure, permeable pavements, rainwater harvesting systems, and vegetative swales. By implementing these strategies, stormwater runoff can be controlled, mitigating the risk of flooding, improving water quality, promoting groundwater recharge, and reducing the demand for freshwater resources. The study utilizes the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software to design the existing stormwater management network and simulate different scenarios. Through the evaluation of performance and analysis of results, the research results demonstrate that the implementation of LID strategies effectively doubled the existing rainfall handling capacity of the stormwater drainage system from 20 mm/h to 40 mm/h. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Seismic design codes are the standards that provide resistance for the structures against the potential seismic forces that the structure may face. One of the provisions in the seismic design codes is the strong column-weak beam (SCWB) requirement. It suggests that at that the sum of the flexural strength of the columns at a joint should be greater than those of the beams at the same joint. This requirement aims to prevent column yielding during an earthquake and avoid story mechanisms in moment frames. Although the seismic design codes suggest a minimum column-to-beam strength ratio, previous research has shown that this ratio may not be sufficient to provide desired collapse mechanisms for all conditions. Also, it has been observed that the column-to-beam strength ratio distribution along the height of the frame structures affects the understory and damage distribution. This study investigated the effect of different column-to-beam strength ratio distributions on the drift distribution of the reinforced concrete moment frames. For this purpose, different frames were considered with different numbers of stories and bays. OpenSeesPy framework was used for numerical modeling. To evaluate the seismic response of the model frames, nonlinear time history, and nonlinear static analyses were used. The results showed that the column-to-beam strength ratio distribution significantly affects the distribution of inter-story drift ratios. A geospatial analysis of flood risk zones in Cyprus: insights from statistical and multi-criteria decision analysis methods

Over the past few decades, flood disasters have emerged as the predominant natural hazard in Cyprus, primarily driven by the escalating influence of climate change in the Mediterranean region. In view of this, the objective of this study is to develop a geospatial flood risk map for the island of Cyprus by considering 14 flood hazard factors and five flood vulnerability factors, utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) and remotely sensed datasets. A comparative assessment was conducted for hazard mapping, employing statistical methods of frequency ratio (FR) and FR Shannon’s entropy (FR-SE), and multi-criteria decision analysis method of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP). The main findings indicated that the FR method exhibited the highest predictive capability, establishing it as the most suitable approach for flood hazard mapping. Additionally, vulnerability factors were aggregated using F-AHP to generate the vulnerability map. The resulting flood risk map, which is the product of flood hazard and flood vulnerability, revealed that 9% of the island was located within highly risky regions, while 13.2% was classified as moderate risk zones. Spatial analysis of these high-risk areas indicated their concentration in the primary city districts of the island. Therefore, to mitigate future risks within these cities, an analysis of potential expansion zones was conducted, identifying the best-suited zone exhibiting the lowest risk. The generated flood risk map can serve as a valuable resource for decision-makers on the island, facilitating the integration of flood risk analysis into urban management plans. © The Author(s) 2024.
