This paper proposes the impedance matching circuit which keeps input impedance constant by using boost converter and resonant rectifier. In the simulation, the results confirmed characteristic of this circuit and achieved high power factor such as almost 1.0. The proposed circuit is able to reduce total harmonics distortion (THD) by 13%. Experimental result shows that input power factor is almost 1.0. The THD reduces 71.3% compared with simulation result of diode rectifier.

The requirement for new flexible adaptive grippers is the ability to detect and recognize objects in their environments. It is known that robotic manipulators are highly nonlinear systems, and an accurate mathematical model is difficult to obtain, thus making it difficult make decision strategies using conventional techniques. Here, an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for controlling input displacement and object recognition of a new adaptive compliant gripper is presented. The grasping function of the proposed adaptive multi-fingered gripper relies on the physical contact of the finger with an object. This design of the each finger has embedded sensors as part of its structure. The use of embedded sensors in a robot gripper gives the control system the ability to control input displacement of the gripper and to recognize particular shapes of the grasping objects. Fuzzy based controllers develop a control signal according to grasping object shape which yields on the firing of the rule base. The selection of the proper rule base depending on the situation can be achieved by using an ANFIS strategy, which becomes an integrated method of approach for the control purposes. In the designed ANFIS scheme, neural network techniques are used to select a proper rule base, which is achieved using the back propagation algorithm. The simulation results presented in this paper show the effectiveness of the developed method.

In this paper, the envelope-constrained H∗ filtering problem is investigated for a class of discrete time-varying stochastic systems over a finite horizon. The system under consideration involves fading measurements, randomly occurring nonlinearities (RONs) and mixed (multiplicative and additive) noises. A novel envelope-constrained performance criterion is proposed to better quantify the transient dynamics of the filtering error process over the finite horizon. The purpose of the problem addressed is to design a time-varying filter such that both the H∗ performance and the desired envelope constraints are achieved at each time step. By utilizing the stochastic analysis techniques combined with the ellipsoid description on the estimation errors, sufficient conditions are established in the form of recursive matrix inequalities (RMIs) reflecting both the envelope information and the desired H∗ performance index. The filter gain matrix is characterized by means of the solvability of the deduced RMIs. Finally, a simulation example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed filtering design scheme. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Short lived chest pain episodes of post PCI patients represent the most common clinical scenario treated in the Accidents and Emergency Room. Continuous ECG monitoring could substantially diminish such hospital admissions and related ambulance calls. Delivering community based, easy-to-handle, easy to wear, real time electrocardiography systems is still a quest, despite the existence of electronic electrocardiography systems for several decades. The PATRIOT system serves this challenge via a 12-channel, easy to wear, easy to carry, mobile linked, miniaturized automatic ECG device and a Cloud platform. The system may deliver high quality electrocardiograms of a patient to medical personnel either on the spot or remotely both in a synchronous or asynchronous mode, enhancing autonomy, mobility, quality of life and safety of recently treated coronary artery disease patients.

Modern societies increasingly rely on automatic control systems. These systems are hardly pure technical systems; instead they are complex socio-technical systems, which consist of technical elements and social components. It is necessary to have a systematic approach to analyze these systems because it is growing evidence that accidents from these systems usually have complex causal factors which form an interconnected network of events,rather than a simple cause-effect chain. We take railway Train control systems(TCS) as an example to demonstrate the importance of the socio-technical approach to analyze the system. The paper presents an investigation of recent high-speed railway accident by applying STAMP – one of the most notable socio-technical system analysis techniques, outlines improvements to the system which could avoid similar accidents in the future. We also provide our valuable feedback for the use of STAMP.

This paper presents a vision-based fingertip writing digits detection and recognition system using a CMOS camera and FPGA implementation. It is a real-time signature detector, since the image process algorithms are all executed in Verilog code. The experimental results show that the system can successfully recognize fingertip-numeral-writing with a accuracy rate of 95.8%.

Visitors utilize the urban space based on their thermal perception and thermal environment. The thermal adaptation engages the user’s behavioural, physiological and psychological aspects. These aspects play critical roles in user’s ability to assess the thermal environments. Previous studies have rarely addressed the effects of identified factors such as gender, age and locality on outdoor thermal comfort, particularly in hot, dry climate. This study investigated the thermal comfort of visitors at two city squares in Iran based on their demographics as well as the role of thermal environment. Assessing the thermal comfort required taking physical measurement and questionnaire survey. In this study, a non-linear model known as the neural network autoregressive with exogenous input (NN-ARX) was employed. Five indices of physiological equivalent temperature (PET), predicted mean vote (PMV), standard effective temperature (SET), thermal sensation votes (TSVs) and mean radiant temperature (T mrt) were trained and tested using the NN-ARX. Then, the results were compared to the artificial neural network (ANN) and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The findings showed the superiority of the NN-ARX over the ANN and the ANFIS. For the NN-ARX model, the statistical indicators of the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE) were 0.53 and 0.36 for the PET, 1.28 and 0.71 for the PMV, 2.59 and 1.99 for the SET, 0.29 and 0.08 for the TSV and finally 0.19 and 0.04 for the T mrt.

This paper studies how to optimize the energy usage of home appliances in the demand response framework from the consumer's perspective. The loads of major home appliances are divided into three categories: fixed loads, regulate-able loads, and deferrable loads. For efficient usage of the home appliances, an integrative optimization of the three category loads is needed. The paper investigates the relation of the integrative optimization and individual optimization of each category load. A regression-based learning strategy is employed to learn HAVC energy consumption model for development of more efficient DR policy. The study is conducted through an integrative computational experiment approach that combines a home energy simulator and MATLAB together for demand response development and evaluation. The paper examines how the integrative demand response of the residential home appliances are affected by dynamic pricing tariffs, seasons, and weather. Case studies are conducted by considering home energy consumption, dynamic electricity pricing schemes, and demand response methods.

This paper presents a new multiphase-multilevel inverter configuration for open-winding loads and suitable for medium power (low-voltage/high-current) applications such as 'More Electric Aircraft'. Modular structure comprised of standard dual three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) along with one additional bi-directional semi-conductor device (MOSFET/IGBT) per phase and two capacitors with neutral point. The additional switches and capacitors are introduced to generate the additional voltage levels in outputs of the VSI. An original modified single carrier five-level modulation (MSCFM) algorithm is developed in this work and overcomes the complexity of standard space vector modulations, easy for real implementation purposes in digital processors. Proposed six-phase multilevel inverter configuration generates multilevel outputs with benefit in comprises with standard multilevel inverter topologies. Further, the complete numerical model of the proposed AC converter along with pulse-width modulation (PWM) is developed with Matlab/PLECS simulation software's. A set of observed results is presented in balanced working condition and always shown good agreement with the theoretical developments.
