The purpose of this paper is to utilize Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to perform stereo vision distance detection. However, the stereo vision built by two cameras makes memory space lacking and image process slow under the constraints of FPGA application. In this paper, efficient memory space allocation and hardware calculation for stereo vision detection built in a system on a Programmable Chip (SOPC) based on FPGA are proposed. The hardware for stereo vision distance calculation includes the processing for the images of gray, binary, dilation, erosion, etc, and image geometry method for the vision distance through information of phase differences between two lenses. In addition, the simple hardware algorithm of background image subtraction to capture an object image from a series of image frames is also included. The totally hardware to perform stereo vision distance detection is difficult implementation, but firmware (some calculation in software) is flexible and quick to develop. Therefore, the performance of stereo vision distance detection according to hardware and firmware is compared. Finally, the distance calculation between objects and the lenses is demonstrated by practical experiments. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

This paper investigates the convergence of an iterative distributed model predictive control (DMPC) scheme for linear systems interconnected by dynamics and costs. The DMPC scheme is based on a Jacobi-type iteration and exchange of primal variables. Previous results show that, in the limit, the scheme converges to the Pareto optimal solution but no results on the convergence rate are given. We will first establish a bound on the convergence rate and show that weights used in the scheme and strength of coupling between subsystems have a strong influence on this bound. Subsequently, two approaches to determine the weights are compared. Random numerical examples are used to compare the theoretical bound on the convergence rate with the actual convergence of the scheme.

Pathogen incidence rate prediction, which can be considered as time series modeling, is an important task for infectious disease incidence rate prediction and for public health. This paper investigates the application of a genetic computation technique, namely GEP, for pathogen incidence rate prediction. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional sliding windows in GEP-based time series modeling, the paper introduces the problem of mining effective sliding window, for discovering optimal sliding windows for building accurate prediction models. To utilize the periodical characteristic of pathogen incidence rates, a multi-segment sliding window consisting of several segments from different periodical intervals is proposed and used. Since the number of such candidate windows is still very large, a heuristic method is designed for enumerating the candidate effective multi-segment sliding windows. Moreover, methods to find the optimal sliding window and then produce a mathematical model based on that window are proposed. A performance study on real-world datasets shows that the techniques are effective and efficient for pathogen incidence rate prediction. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, a developed automatic sleep stage classification system with a portable EEG recording device, (Mindo-4s) is implemented by JAVA-based sleep graphical user interface (GUI) in android platform. First, the parameters of the developed sleep stage classification system, including extracting effective sleep features and a hierarchical classification structure consisting of preliminary wake detection rule, adaptive adjustment scheme, and support vector machine, were trained by our existing sleep database, which collected using polysomnogram (PSG), in MATLAB program. Finally, this classification system would be reedited by JAVA language, and the corresponding JAVA-based sleep GUI software was working in android platform and Mindo-4s. The connection between JAVA-based sleep GUI software and the portable Mindo-4s was through Bluetooth communication. The performance of this JAVA-based sleep GUI can reach 72.43% average accuracy comparing to the result from manual scoring. This JAVA-based sleep GUI can on-line display, record and analyze the forehead EEG signals simultaneously. After sleep, the user can received a complete sleep report, including sleep efficiency, sleep stage distribution, from JAVA-based sleep GUI. Thus, this system can provide a preliminary result in sleep quality estimation, and help the sleep doctor to decide someone needs to have a complete PSG testing in hospital. Using this system is more convenient for long-term and home-based daily caring than traditional PSG measurement. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

The control and management problem for large-scale complex urban traffic network is not yet successfully addressed. There are still many difficulties in controlling such large systems, e.g. complexity, high dimension, multiple control objectives, and uncertainties. In the paper, a multi-level MPC hierarchy is proposed to address these difficulties for the control of large-scale urban traffic networks. Under the control hierarchy, a multi-level MPC algorithm is proposed, which includes three levels, the demand balance MPC, the subnetwork MPC, and the intersection controller from top to bottom. A case study is carried out to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the multi-level controller.

The constant increase of life expectancy in the last decades is constantly prompting for new and better solutions to support the overstressed medical system. Solutions for tele monitoring of elder patients in their own homes are seen as one of the key solutions in reducing the financial and human resources demand on a medical system that needs to address a constantly growing number of elder patients with fewer resources. This paper presents an efficient location tracking system design for monitoring elder patients in home environments. This system is designed to be integrated in complex context aware systems, which can provide valuable information and alerts to responsible care takers.

This paper investigates variation of infinite horizon (IH) performance of Model Predictive control (MPC) without constraints as the optimization horizon changes. By exploring properties of the Difference Riccati Equations (DRE), an upper bound and a lower bound of the ratio between variation of IH performance of MPC and finite horizon (FH) optimal cost are obtained. The result shows the dynamic behavior of IH performance of closed-loop MPC systems as the optimization horizon varies. Copyright © 2013 IFAC.

Building simulation models play a vital role in optimal building climate control, energy audit, fault detection and diagnosis, continuous commissioning, and planning. Real system parameters are often unknown or partially unknown and need to be identified through historical data, which are currently acquired by heuristically designed experiments. Without quality sensor data, model calibration is prone to fail, even if the calibration algorithm is appropriate. In this paper, we propose a Fisher-information-matrix (FIM)-based metric to examine the sensor data measurements and how their quality is related to the model calibration quality. It aims to provide quantitative guidance in the calibration cycle of a whole building model that takes as many variables as possible into consideration for the sake of accuracy. Our concerned model is based on well-known physical laws and tries to avoid simplification, thereby leading to a highly discontinuous system with model switches due to the seasonal or daily variation and other reasons. Such a model is implemented in the form of a software package. Hence, no explicit mathematical expression can be given. A key technical challenge is that the complexity of the model prohibits the analytical derivation of FIM, while the numeric calculation is sensitive to sensor noise and model switches. We, hence, propose to adopt an automatic differentiation method, which exploits the operator overload feature of object oriented programming language, for robust numerical FIM calculation. © 2013 IEEE.

Simulator for smart wheelchairs is of great significance for both driver training and algorithm design. A development and simulation platform for wheelchairs is presented in this paper. On this platform, simulations of kinematics, dynamics and sensors are integrated, and a virtual prototype of wheelchair and virtual world are modled also. The sensors include encoders, a laser range finder and a set of Kinect. This platform is implemented in Gazebo and ROS, and is completely open source and freely available. Experiments verifies that this platform can be used as a valid tool for driver training and algorithm design. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
