This paper deals with a new approach for evaluation of e-learning programs. Based on methods of general measure theory an evaluation model is developed which can be used for assessment of complex logical target structures in context of e-learning programs. Basic idea of presented method is the embedding of aims to be reached in an adapted logical structure which contains the key and sub targets of evaluation. For such structures a measure theoretical scoring model is developed. It is described how to given observation data, obtained with an adjusted assessment checklist, a score value for evaluation of an e-learning program can be computed. The presented model is very versatile. By the measure theoretical background the evaluation method becomes open, comprehensible and traceable.

A differential energy based fault protection in microgrid is presented in this paper. Initially the currents at the respective buses are retrieved and processed through a novel time-frequency transform known as S-transform to generate time-frequency contours. Spectral energy content of the time-frequency contours of fault current signals are calculated and differential energy is computed to register the fault patterns in the microgrid at grid-connected and islanded mode. The proposed scheme is tested for different shunt faults (symmetrical and unsymmetrical) and High Impedance Faults (HIF) in the microgrid with radial and loop structure. The results based on extensive study indicate that the differential energy based protection scheme can reliably protect the microgrid against different fault situations. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper aims to present the design of a cloud computing-based equipment monitoring system (EMS), called CCEMS, for the CNC machine tool industry to illustrate the paradigm shift of EMSs from basing on the Internet to basing on the cloud. In the CCEMS, Graphical User Interface (GUI) plays an important role that allows users to interact with the system for controlling and operating equipment, monitoring equipment performance and statuses, detecting and diagnosing equipment faults, conjecturing production quality and precision of equipment, and so on. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional Web GUIs, this paper proposes a novel Web application implementation framework, called NWAIF, for the CCEMS, by using Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology. Finally, a paradigm CCEMS for monitoring CNC machine tools is constructed and used to validate the efficacy of the CCEMS and NWAIF. Testing results show that the paradigm CCEMS meets the desired functional requirements and the GUIs created by using the proposed NWAIF is superior to traditional Web-based GUIs in terms of shorter response times to complete the testing operations.

This study proposes a virtual-metrology-based control system for conjecturing machining states and suggesting controller operating modes. The two machining state conjecture models were integrated to validate the virtual metrology results using a dual-stage featuring scheme and a two-phase modeling procedure. The featuring scheme is to extract significant features from collecting data for modeling and to minimize the modeling features by using a genetic algorithm. The modeling procedure adopts two quality indicators to evaluate model effectiveness. Two case studies indicate that the system achieves a mean MAPE of precision estimation less than 8.5% and suggests the controller with operating modes in 1 s.

Shape analysis plays an important role in many medical imaging studies. One of the recent shape analysis methods uses the Laplace Beltrami operator which is also used in this paper for hippocampal shape comparison. We proposed a feature vector which consists of size measures and shape descriptors based on Laplace Beltrami eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The aforementioned feature space is utilised for automatic differentiating normal subjects from epileptic patients as well as distinguishing epileptic patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE) from patients with right temporal lobe epilepsy (RTLE). Achieved results are diagnostic accuracy of 93% with 95% sensitivity and lateralization accuracy of 86%. The results are comparable to spherical harmonic based shape analysis results and notably improved in comparison to volumetric analysis results.

This paper studies the finite-time cooperative tracking problem for networked Lagrange systems with a time-varying leader's generalized coordinate derivative. First, a finite-time state feedback control protocol is proposed for each follower by using only local information, under which the states of the followers are shown to converge to those of the leader in finite time. The results of the static feedback design are then extended to those of the dynamic feedback design. The finite-time cooperative tracking problem of networked Lagrange systems over a directed switching communication topology is proposed. With the help of a so-called finite-time consensus-based observer, we show that cooperative tracking of networked Lagrange systems can be achieved in finite time if the leader has directed information paths to each follower at each time instant and the control parameters satisfy certain conditions.

This paper studies the leader-following consensus problem for a group of agents with identical linear systems subject to control input saturation. We focus on two classes of linear systems, neutrally stable systems and double integrator systems. For neurally stable systems, we establish that global consensus can be achieved by linear local feedback laws over an undirected fixed or a switching communication topology. For double integrator systems, we establish that global consensus can be achieved by linear local feedback laws over a fixed communication topology and, with the help of a simple saturation function in the local feedback laws, global consensus can also be achieved over a switching undirected topology. Simulation results illustrate the theoretical results.

Extending CSP to detect motor imagery in a four-class BCI

Brain computer Interface (BCI) provides a direct communication channel from brain to peripheral equipment. Common Spatial Patterns (CSP) is wildly used to extract features for electroencephalogram (EEG). However, basic CSP only suits two-class discrimination and is unable to solve multi-class discrimination problems. This paper proposes a modified CSP method termed Bisearch Common Spatial Patterns (BCSP) to solve a four-class BCI problem. In BCSP, the Fisher's Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is used to discriminate among the four motor imagery tasks. The BCSP can effectively reduce the number of the basic CSP, and thus makes the overall classification procedure more efficient. The Graz BCI data set from the BCI 2008 competition be used to verify the effectiveness of the BCSP. Simulation results show that BCSP has better performance than other extension schemes. © 2012 Binary Information Press January 2012.

In this paper, a heuristic method based on Genetic Algorithms (GA) is proposed to improve the performance of Fuzzy Logic controllers (FLCs) designed for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) model of nonlinear plants by Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) technique. Generally, T-S models might not represent the dynamics of nonlinear plants accurately. Due to this mismatch, sometimes the response of the controlled nonlinear plant is not as desirable as the response of the corresponding T-S model controlled by the same FLC. Despite the fact that there is a flurry of research on the stability of FLCs applied to T-S model of nonlinear systems, the stability matters of FLCs applied to nonlinear systems is still a challenge. It is obvious that the performance of FLCs is entirely affected by the characteristics of membership functions. Thus, by tuning the type or parameters of fuzzy controller's membership functions using GA, the drawbacks caused by model mismatch can be decreased. In fact, the proposed method concerns the applicability of fuzzy PDC controllers to nonlinear plants and does not confide itself to dealing with T-S models. Thus, the improved fuzzy PDC controller is a fine-tuned PDC controller that can compensate the nonlinear plant as well as the corresponding T-S model. In order to verify the introduced strategy, the problem of balancing and swing up of an inverted pendulum on a cart is considered as a nonlinear case study. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the improved PDC. © 2011 Intl Journal of Adv Mechatr.
