In this paper, a heuristic method based on Genetic Algorithms (GA) is proposed to improve the performance of Fuzzy Logic controllers (FLCs) designed for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) model of nonlinear plants by Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) technique. Generally, T-S models might not represent the dynamics of nonlinear plants accurately. Due to this mismatch, sometimes the response of the controlled nonlinear plant is not as desirable as the response of the corresponding T-S model controlled by the same FLC. Despite the fact that there is a flurry of research on the stability of FLCs applied to T-S model of nonlinear systems, the stability matters of FLCs applied to nonlinear systems is still a challenge. It is obvious that the performance of FLCs is entirely affected by the characteristics of membership functions. Thus, by tuning the type or parameters of fuzzy controller's membership functions using GA, the drawbacks caused by model mismatch can be decreased. In fact, the proposed method concerns the applicability of fuzzy PDC controllers to nonlinear plants and does not confide itself to dealing with T-S models. Thus, the improved fuzzy PDC controller is a fine-tuned PDC controller that can compensate the nonlinear plant as well as the corresponding T-S model. In order to verify the introduced strategy, the problem of balancing and swing up of an inverted pendulum on a cart is considered as a nonlinear case study. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the improved PDC.

Buildings worldwide account for nearly 40% of global energy consumption. The biggest energy consumer in buildings is the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. HVAC also ranks top in terms of number of complaints by tenants. Maintaining HVAC systems in good conditions through early fault detection is thus a critical issue. The problem, however, is difficult since HVAC systems are large in scale, consisting of many coupling subsystems, building and equipment dependent, and operating under uncertain conditions. In this paper, a model-based and data-driven method is presented for robust system-level fault detection with potential for large-scale implementation. It is a synergistic integration of (1) Statistical Process control (SPC) for measuring and analyzing variations;(2) Kalman filtering based on gray-box models to provide predictions and determine SPC control limits;and (3) system analysis for analyzing fault propagation. The method has been tested against a simulation model of a 420-meter-high building. It detects both sudden faults and gradual degradation, and differentiates faults within a subsystem or propagated from elsewhere. Furthermore, the method is simple and generic, and should have good replicability and scalability. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper considers optimized network topology design and distributed control for linear discrete-time systems consisting of subsystems interconnected through states, inputs, and a cost function. By using a distributed control law, which makes use of the communicated states of other subsystems, closed-loop performance is increased at the expense of communication costs. This raises the question of how to find a topology and associated distributed control law with optimal trade-off between communication costs and closed-loop performance. As an answer to this question, we propose an approach to simultaneous optimization of network topology and control law with respect to a cost function which combines a quadratic performance criterion with costs associated to the presence of communication links. The problem is formulated as mixed-integer semi-definite problem (MISDP) where the discrete optimization of the network topology subject to communication constraints and embedded subproblems for structured controller synthesis lead to an upper bound for the combined cost. An example is used to illustrate the method.

The electric power is indispensable for modern life. However, there is a problem of harmonic disturbance when the harmonic power runs into electronic devices. To overcome the problem and realize a stable supply of the electric power is an important issue. In this study, we have developed a voltage-current waveform telemetry system for the remote measurement of the harmonics in the power delivery lines. The system consists of sensors, preamplifiers, a single board computer, and power collectors. Improvements are made on all of these components except the sensors. The power collector is a coil that can be placed around the same power line that we measure. We have designed the power collector by a finite element method(FEM) so that it can provide enough electricity for the computer to work properly. Thus, no other power source such as a battery except the secondary rechargeable battery for the recovery is necessary at the measurement place. The preamplifier in the new system is a single-supply differential amplifier circuit, and the single board computer has an inexpensive SH-3 CPU. Through experiments, we have confirmed that the power collector can provide sufficient electricity and that the new system can successfully measure the waveforms and the harmonics in power delivery systems. © 2011 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper examines robust partially mode delay dependent H ∞ output feedback controller design for discrete-time systems with random communication delays. A finite state Markov chain with partially known transition probabilities is used to model random communication delays between sensors and controller. Based on Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, a novel methodology for designing a partially mode delay-dependent output feedback controller is proposed. Using cone complementarity linearization algorithm bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs) are solved to obtain the controller gains. We also show that the results for completely known transition probabilities and completely unknown transition probabilities can be derived as special cases of our result. The effectiveness of the proposed design methodology is demonstrated by a numerical example. To the best of authors' knowledge, the problem of designing an output feedback controller for a partially known transition probability has not been fully investigated. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.

Detection of gear cracks from vibration data is a difficult task. This paper investigates an alternative to the linear predictor residual fault detection based on the nonlinear adaptive control system concept of frequency estimators. The frequency estimator model takes advantage of the sinusoidal nature of vibration and adapts the system model during operation. The low-computational requirements, no-priori knowledge, sinusoidal-based prediction, and on-line model adaption makes this model ideal for on-line gear crack fault detection. Performance is evaluated through both synthetic and experimental data while comparing to the autoregressive linear predictor model.

A passive image steganalysis method is proposed to universally detect spatial-domain steganography schemes. It is shown to have better performance than universal steganalyzers known to be powerful in spatial domain, including the WFLogSv and the WAM methods. This level of accuracy is the result of improving the WFLogSv steganalyzer by considering a more comprehensive relationship between the singular values of each image block and the linear correlation of the rows and the columns. That is, instead of the closeness of the lower singular values to zero, the energy distribution of the singular values is investigated. An innovative measure is proposed for this investigation, which is inspired from arithmetic mean-geometric mean inequality. Experimental results confirm the supremacy of the proposed steganalysis scheme over its counterparts.

A passive universal image steganalysis method is proposed that is shown to be of higher detection accuracy than existing truly blind steganalysis methods including Farid's and the WAM. This is achieved by improving some weaknesses of Farid's steganalysis scheme in feature extraction, that is, instead of deriving an over-determined equation system for each sub band of the wavelet decomposition, the sub bands are divided into overlapping blocks and an over-determined equation system is constructed for each block. To guarantee the existence of finite answers, the over-determined equation systems are solved in a way different from Farid's by using Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse concept. Further improvement to the performance is achieved by adding diagonal directions and increasing the number of moments. The comparative evaluations confirm the superiority of the proposed method over prevalent blind steganalysis schemes. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents a new pipeline inspection robot that has multiple sensors for inspection of 80-100mm pipelines. The special feature of this robot is realization of driving and steering capability by using only two wheel chains. Compared to popularly employed pipeline robots using three wheel chains, the new design allows simple robot control and easy user interface, specially at T-branch. As another advantage, the flat shape of this robot allows mounting additional sensors on the both sides of the robot. The kinematics and three control modes are described. Finally, the performance of this robot system is verified by experimentation.

Modern control methods are suitable for increasing production capabilities of industrial enterprises by employing information technologies, which are often used for modernization of industrial processes without the need of acquiring new equipment. Therefore, automation of the industrial lines is one of the most important directions of the technological progress, as it leads to improvement and modernization of industrial processes. The technological process of tellurium production includes a number of stages, which require automatic regulation of many parameters with a high degree of precision. In this work, we analyze and propose a unified concept of application of modern automation techniques that can be used to build a three-level hieratical control system intended for improving the quality of product.
