Congestion management is one of the most important issues for secure and reliable system operations in deregulated electricity market. This paper presents a cost/worth analysis approach for optimal location and sizing of Distributed Resources (DRs) to mitigate congestion and increase security of the system. In order to reduce the solution space a priority of candidate buses is formed, then optimal location and sizing problem is discussed. To increase the accuracy of results, load duration curve is constituted and based on this curve different load levels are incorporated into this study. Proposed method considers economical factors such as congestion rent, deferred upgrading investment and DR costs. The proposed method is illustrated using IEEE Reliability Test system (RTS) and the impacts of considering different parameters such as load growth rate and different load levels are studied. Obtained results show that the proposed methodology is capable of finding the best location and optimal size of DR that can reduce congestion in the transmission system. ©2010 IEEE.

A simple two-neuron model of a discrete Hopfield neural network is considered. The local stability is analyzed with the associated characteristic model. In order to study the dynamic behavior, the Pitchfork bifurcation is examined. In the case of two neurons, one necessary condition for yielding the Pitchfork bifurcation is found. In addition, the stability and direction of the Pitchfork bifurcation are determined by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

This paper proves the uniform continuity of the value function for exit time optimal control problems of hybrid systems with autonomous and controlled transitions. By extending conditions already used for purely continuous systems the paper provides the ground for numerical algorithms for dynamic programming of hybrid systems. Transversality conditions for the continuous dynamics at the guard set boundaries ensure that the continuity property of the value function is not altered by a discrete transition of the hybrid system.

Inattentive and impaired drivers are a major cause of road accidents. Especially when impaired by drugs, fatigue or physical handicaps, the skill levels, driving habits, capabilities and decisions of a human driver are adversely affected. In such cases, the ability of a driver to safely operate a vehicle may be augmented considerably by well tuned and driver adaptive warning and assistance systems. Data from 105 drivers were collected in the Drive Safe project on an approximately 30 km route containing both city and highway traffic. The data was used to develop methods for determining inattentive/impaired drivers. This paper is on a lane keeping driver assistant system that is activated once such an inattentive/impaired driver who cannot perform a good task of lane keeping by himself is determined. Robust, parameter space based and velocity scheduled control design techniques carried out in the COMES toolbox are used for designing the lane keeping controller. A camera based image processing algorithm for lane detection and tracking is used. The image processing algorithm and the lane keeping assistant control system are evaluated first using offline simulations and then using more realistic, real time hardware-in-the-loop simulations. While a relatively simple linear model is used for lane keeping controller design, evaluation of the designed controller also uses the high fidelity, high order, realistic and nonlinear vehicle model in Carmaker HiL. A PC is used for processing video frames coming from an in-vehicle camera pointed towards the road ahead. Lane detection and tracking computations including fitting of composite Bezier curves to curved lanes are carried out in this PC. A dSpace microautobox is available for obtaining the lane data from the PC and the Carmaker vehicle data from the dSpace compact simulator used and calculating the required steering actions and sending them to the Carmaker vehicle model. This work develops a novel virtual production control system (VPCS), which is allocated on a manufacturer side to adjust production pace of a supplier using a short-term demand plan for reducing inventory level. In addition to remotely monitoring production progress of a supplier, the proposed VPCS allows manufacturers to pre-schedule the latest outputs using an integer programming model, to simulate the short-term plan by a stochastic colored timed Petri Nets, and to adjust the production pace of the supplier via the plan. An industrial case study shows that the supplier inventory was reduced by 13.8% over that of the real inventory level with an order-fill rate exceeding 99.6% using the proposed VPCS. © 2010 IEEE.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a neurological disease that affects millions of individuals in the world. Majority of TLE patients suffer from refractory seizures. Determining abnormal/damaged regions of the brain that harbor seizure focus is a critical step towards treatment of TLE patients. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a non-invasive method that we use in this work to determine damaged regions of white matter in the brain. To this end, we apply two methods, voxel based morphometry (VBM) and fiber tracking. We use these methods along with two anisotropy maps (EAR and FA) extracted from the DTI data. We use DTI data of 31 subjects (12 normal subjects and 19 TLE patients) for testing and evaluation studies. The VBM method shows that TLE is associated with reduction of both of FA and EAR values in several regions within the temporal lobes. The tractography method shows abnormal diffusion characteristics in three fiber bundles (fornix, uncinate fasciculus, and cingulum). The results show that the EAR maps are less sensitive to noise than the FA maps and the EAR values change more than the FA values in TLE. ©2010 IEEE.

Digital image copyrights and image authentication draw a great attention specially in critical image communications. This paper presents a proposal for a new encoder-decoder, which we call SecEncoDeco, for securing JPEG images. An extra stage of security is embedded in the traditional JPEG codec. This security stage uses the Secure Hill cipher technique. This encryption technique has many advantages over the traditional Hill cipher. The Safe Time of the Secure Hill cipher is deduced and presented in detail. Implementation of the proposed method is built based on MATLAB. Complete evaluation for the proposed codec is performed which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed secure codec for image copyright protection.

The aim of this study is to assess the functional connectivity from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Spectral clustering algorithm was applied to the realistic and real fMRI data acquired from a resting healthy subject to find functionally connected brain regions. In order to make computation of the spectral decompositions of the entire brain volume feasible, the similarity matrix has been sparsified with the t-nearestneighbor approach. Realistic data were created to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm and comparing it to the recently proposed spectral clustering algorithm with the Nystrom approximation and also with some well-known algorithms such as the Cross Correlation Analysis (CCA) and the spatial Independent Component Analysis (sICA). To enhance the performance of the methods, a variety of data pre and post processing steps, including data normalization, outlier removal, dimensionality reduction by using wavelet coefficients, estimation of number of clusters and optimal number of independent components (ICs). Results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm for functional connectivity analysis.

The hybrid minimum principle (HMP) gives necessary conditions to be satisfied for optimal solutions of a hybrid dynamical system. In particular, the HMP accounts for autonomous switching between discrete states that occurs whenever the trajectory hits switching manifolds. In this paper, the existing HMP is extended for hybrid systems with partitioned state space to provide necessary conditions for optimal trajectories that pass through an intersection of switching manifolds. This extension is especially useful for the numerical solution of hybrid optimal control problems as it allows for algorithms with significant reduction of computational complexity. Algorithms based on previous versions of the HMP solve separate optimal control problems for each possible sequence of discrete states. The extension enables us to consider the optimal sequence as subject of optimal control that is varied and finally determined during a single optimization run. A first numerical result illustrates the effectiveness of an algorithm based on the extended HMP.

An algorithm for hybrid optimal control is proposed that varies the discrete state sequence based on gradient information during the search for an optimal trajectory. The algorithm is developed for hybrid systems with partitioned state space. It uses a version of the hybrid minimum principle that allows optimal trajectories to pass through intersections of switching manifolds, which enables the algorithm to vary the sequence. Consequently, the combinatorial complexity of former algorithms can be avoided, since not each possible sequence has to be investigated separately anymore. The convergence of the algorithm is proven and a numerical example demonstrates the efficiency of the algorithm.
