Within the last decade, e-commerce has increased at an extraordinary level. The widespread use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (VAVs) in the logistics sector can reduce traffic density, improve delivery time, and can provide contactless delivery. This work proposes a new hybrid VAV, that combines the benefits of vertical take-off and land vehicle and a fixed-wing aircraft. It can carry multiple packages, which can decent automatically towards the recipients. This approach eliminates time-consuming landing maneuvers of the VA V for delivery. This work focuses on the design of the vehicle, and the challenges of the transitions from VTOL to aircraft modes and vice versa with a Model Predictive controller. © 2021 IEEE.

In recent years popularity of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems has been increased rapidly. There have been various research projects on the robotics and control community on these systems. In this work, a general UAV platform that can be used for education as well as research has been proposed. This system has embedded computers and various sensors such as IMU, camera, LIDAR sensor to implement various control algorithms. To emphasize the usefulness of the system, an embedded visual tracking algorithm has been developed and presented. In experiments, the quadrotor UAV could be able to successfully track the marker under Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control, with the help of the on-board vision computer. © 2017 ACM.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are seeing widespread use in military, scientific, and civilian sectors in recent years. As the mission demands increase, these systems are becoming more complicated. Omnidirectional camera is a vision sensor that can captures 360° view in a single frame. In recent years omnidirectional camera usage has experienced a remarkable increase in many fields, where many innovative research has been done. Although, it is very promising, employment of omnidirectional cameras in UAVs is quite new. In this paper, an innovative sensory system is proposed, that has an omnidirectional imaging device and a pan tilt zoom (PTZ) camera. Such a system combines the advantages of both of the camera systems. The system can track any moving object within its 360° field of view and provide detailed images of it. The detection of the moving object has been accomplished by an adaptive background subtraction method implemented on the lowered resolution images of the catadioptric camera. A novel algorithm has also been developed to estimate the relative distance of the object with respect to the UAV, using tracking information of both of the cameras. The algorithms are implemented on an experimental system to validate the approach. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

There is an emerging need of intelligent vehicles on indoor environments such as university campuses, airports or shopping malls. These intelligent vehicles can help elderly, disabled, or people with heavy luggage. This paper describes an intelligent vehicle that can be used indoor as well as outdoor areas for this purpose. Finding the exact location for indoor robots is not an easy task, since Global Positioning system (GPS) is not available indoors. In this work onboard sensors such as motor encoder and steering-wheel encoder were used to obtain localization estimates. The errors are determined to be low even when the vehicle travels long distances. © 2017 ACM.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are seeing more widespread use in military, scientific, and civilian sectors in recent years. This study presents algorithms for the visual-servo control of an UAV. The helicopter has been stabilized with visual information through the control loop. Unlike previous study that use pose estimation approach which is time consuming and subject to various errors, the visual-servo control is more reliable and fast. The model involves the camera speed and visual sensor blocks. Visual sensor block consists of the camera model and feature extraction blocks. Various simulations are developed on MATLAB, in which the quadrotor aerial vehicle has been visual-servo controlled. In order to show the effectiveness of the algorithms, experiments were performed on a model UAV which suggest successful performance.

Speed, agility, maneuverability, range and efficiency of birds and insects are far beyond the conventional flying mini vehicles. There are various research works to create vehicles that imitate these amazing creatures. In this paper, a wing mechanism is designed for a micro aerial vehicle using four flapping wings. In this system, a four-bar mechanism is preferred as the wing mechanism. In order to obtain flapping motion from rotation of the motor, a crank rocker mechanism is used by connecting the shortest link to the fixed link. Flapping range (swing angle) is determined by obtaining dead-center positions. It is chosen as large as possible since it is related to the lift force. Optimization of transmission angle is made in order to transmit torque from the input link to the output link with a minimum loss. The link length ratio is computed by deciding swing angle and angle between dead center positions. While computing the ratio of lengths of the links, deviation of transmission angle from 90° is attempted to be adjusted to a minimum level. The dimensions of the wings are determined with respect to the lift force. The prototype vehicle has been designed and manufactured with the obtained results.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for military, scientific, and civilian sectors are increasing drastically in recent years. The quadrotor platform has been used for many applications and research studies, as well. One of the limiting factors that prevents further implementation of the quadrotor system into applications, is the way quadrotor moves. It needs to tilt along the desired direction of motion. By doing this it can have necessary acceleration towards that direction. But tilting has the undesired effect of moving the onboard cameras' direction of view. This becomes an issue for surveillance and other vision based tasks. This study presents the design and control of a novel quadrotor system. Unlike previous study that uses regular quadrotor, this study proposes an alternative propulsion system formed by tilting rotors. This design eliminates the need of tilting the airframe, and it suggests superior performance with respect to regular quadrotor design. The mathematical model of the tiltable-rotor type quadrotor and designed control algorithms are explained. Various simulations are developed on MATLAB, in which the proposed quadrotor aerial vehicle has been successfully controlled. Comparison of the proposed system to regular quadrotor suggests better performance.

In recent years quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles are being used in various different studies. A regular quadrotor has fixed rotors. This inability to tilt its rotors lead to limited success in trajectory tracking due to controlling 6 DOF systems only with 4 input parameters. There are some studies on tilt rotor and tilt-roll rotor quadrotors that can compensate for versatile conditions. Some of these proposed quadrotors are able to hover and position hold at user defined desired angles unlike regular quadrotors. This study presents the design and control of a novel quadrotor system that can tilt its rotors independently so that it can adaptively update its rotor angles and speeds to compensate for more chaotic and realistic scenarios. After deriving the mathematical model, the designed control algorithms are explained by comparing with the latter studies' abilities. Proposed quadrotor with adaptive control is compared with regular and non-adaptive tilt-roll rotor type multicopters, in various simulations. The results show that the proposed design has clear advantages in certain situations, especially when environmental limitations and hardware inconsistencies and inefficiencies exist.
