As an emerging distributed machine learning paradigm, federated learning (FL) only shares model updates between clients and servers, and training data are secured on each client’s device. Due to local data privacy, FL is vulnerable to poisoning attacks, which causes serious degradation in the model performance. In this paper, we analyze the targeted poisoning attacks of FL and reveal that when the data held by each client of FL is independent and identically distributed (iid), the loss of all non-poisoned models on some clean dataset agrees with a normal distribution (ND), while the loss value of the poisoned model deviates from this distribution. Based on this observation, we propose a method named ND_defense to defend FL targeted poisoning attacks. We set a small clean test dataset on the server, compute the loss of each client model on it, detect the abnormal ones with the proposed loss-value-based inspection algorithm, and then only aggregate the benign clients’ models to get the global model. We conducted experiments on three benchmark datasets and compared several state-of-the-art defense methods. The results show that our NDdefense is effective in defending against targeted poisoning attacks.

Photovoltaic/thermal unit (PV/T) is an innovative technology that allows the renewable energy production by cogenerating electricity and heat simultaneously. This technology is seemed promising for the energy supply in many applications, especially for building envelope. In the present work, the performances of two different PV/T solar plants with a Roll-bond and PV/T sheet-and-tube absorbers are compared under the operating conditions of Catane, Italy. The performance assessment of theses PV/T solar plant is ensured by the dynamic modeling of two PV/T in MATLAB software. Moreover, the PV/T energy yields for suppling the energy need of a simple building are evaluated. From results, the comparison of the two PV/T systems proves that the "Roll-bond" configuration provides a higher thermal performance with a maximum fluid outlet temperature of 42.13 °C with respect to the standard one of 40 °C "Sheet-and-tube" configuration). In terms of the PV/T energy yields used for the energy supply of a standard building, it’s observed that PV/T" Roll-bond" system is very promising. It can fully cover the energy needs of the building with a total coverage factor of 76.79%. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Exploring the usefulness of light field super-resolution for object detection

In order to solve the impact of image degradation on object detection, an object detection method based on light field super-resolution(LFSR) is proposed. This method takes LFSR as an image enhancement step to provide high-quality images for object detection without using expensive imaging equipment. To evaluate this method, three types of objects: person, bicycle, and car, are chosen and the results are compared from 5 parts: detected object quantity, mean confidence score, detection results in different scenes, error detection, and detection results from different images sizes and detection speed. Experimental results based on the common object in context(COCO) dataset show that the method incorporated LFSR improves performance of object detection models.

In 2020, the world suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation highlighted the considerable need for systems to detect viruses quickly. Providing an accurate e-health system that detects, monitors, and controls virus spread became necessary. Countries attempt to reduce the virus's spread using basic processes such as quarantine and lockdown. Early virus detection is requested to reduce the threat and decrease the propagation of the pandemic. This paper proposes an attempt to avoid speed-up spreading based on airborne virus detection. The suggested detection based on the SiNW-FET biosensor is not approved as a standardized diagnostic test. To support the airborne detection methodology, a metasurface technology based on Reflector cylindrical antenna with a sensing unit is proposed to detect viruses. The proposal considered the propagation delays and concentration of a virus. Conducted results prove that the receiver's volume is considered a primary key to an accurate detection rather than the virus's concentration. © 2023 IEEE.

The field of education is rapidly shifting toward digital platforms; however, aviation education continues to rely heavily on traditional paper-based manuals. This persistence is largely due to the inherent complexity, scale, and high costs associated with aviation equipment, making digital transformation particularly challenging. In this paper, we utilizing the analysis-by-synthesis method is presented for multi-view 3D reconstruction of solid objects, specifically focusing on aviation tools. To facilitate this research, a custom dataset was generated using Unity, enabling controlled experimentation and performance evaluation. Comparative analysis with existing benchmarks demonstrates that, despite the intricate nature of aviation tools compared to simpler objects. The proposed architecture effectively reconstructs detailed and accurate digital replicas with 97% accuracy. This advancement has the potential to significantly enhance aviation training by providing immersive, interactive 3D content, bridging the gap between traditional training materials and cutting-edge digital education tools.

In this short paper, we present the devised solutions for the subject identification and relapse detection tasks, which are part of the e-Prevention Challenge hosted at the ICASSP 2023 conference [1] [2] [3]. We specifically design an ensemble scheme of six models - five transformer-based ones and a CNN model - for the identification of subjects from wearable devices, while a personalized - one for each subject - scheme is used for relapse detection in psychotic disorder. Our final submitted solutions yield top performance on both tracks of the challenge: we ranked 2 nd on the subject identification task (with an accuracy of 93.85%) and 1 st on the relapse detection task (with a ROC-AUC and PR-AUC of about 0.65). In electric power transmission and distribution systems, the use of overhead lines instead of underground cables is preferred by power utilities mainly due to the lower construction cost and the easier maintenance access. On the other hand the equipment used in overhead lines is stressed by several factors, such as weather conditions, lightning, vegetation fires, etc. In particular, vegetation fires under the overhead transmission lines could have catastrophic results for the installed equipment and can cause long-lasting electricity interruptions. In this study, condition assessment results are presented for eighteen 150 kV composite insulators exposed to a forest fire event, occurred in the August 2021, in the island of Rhodes, Greece. The evaluation of the fire effects on composite insulators was performed by employing several macroscopic and microscopic diagnostic techniques including visual inspection, hydrophobicity classification, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and optical microscopy analysis. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

DAMPER: A Dual-Stage Medical Report Generation Framework with Coarse-Grained MeSH Alignment and Fine-Grained Hypergraph Matching

Medical report generation is crucial for clinical diagnosis and patient management, summarizing diagnoses and recommendations based on medical imaging. However, existing work often overlook the clinical pipeline involved in report writing, where physicians typically conduct an initial quick review followed by a detailed examination. Moreover, current alignment methods may lead to misaligned relationships. To address these issues, we propose DAMPER, a dual-stage framework for medical report generation that mimics the clinical pipeline of report writing in two stages. In the first stage, a MeSH-Guided Coarse-Grained Alignment (MCG) stage that aligns chest X-ray (CXR) image features with medical subject headings (MeSH) features to generate a rough keyphrase representation of the overall impression. In the second stage, a Hypergraph-Enhanced Fine-Grained Alignment (HFG) stage that constructs hypergraphs for image patches and report annotations, modeling high-order relationships within each modality and performing hypergraph matching to capture semantic correlations between image regions and textual phrases. Finally,the coarse-grained visual features, generated MeSH representations, and visual hypergraph features are fed into a report decoder to produce the final medical report. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of DAMPER in generating comprehensive and accurate medical reports, outperforming state-of-the-art methods across various evaluation metrics. The Snake game, a classic in the gaming world, gains new dimensions with the Snake AI competition, where two players controlled by AI algorithms can now compete simultaneously in the same game session. This competition holds significance in advancing our understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. In the 2020 and 2021 Snake AI competitions, popular algorithms, using graph-based search or heuristic strategies, demonstrate competitive performance, such as the A* algorithm, Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS). Contrary to these heuristic approaches, the Rolling Horizon Co-evolution Algorithm (RHCA), characterised by its core principles of rolling horizon evaluation and co-evolution, maintains two populations, one for each player, to co-evolve with each other without reliance on heuristics. RHCA has been verified its effectiveness in a two-player spaceship game. In this paper, we extend the RHCA application to the two-player Snake AI game, comparing it with other state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, we introduce various obstacles to create different complex scenarios, ensuring a comprehensive analysis. Experimental results reveal RHCA’s superior and stable performance, especially in resource-constrained and complex scenarios. Furthermore, an analysis of RHCA’s behaviours across maps with diverse obstacle scenarios highlights its ability to make intelligent decisions in competing with state-of-the-art methods. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2024.
