The purpose of this discussion panel is to present the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) human factors research needs to the larger human factors research community. The DOT Human Factors Coordinating Committee (HFCC) serves as a multi-modal team with government-wide liaisons to promote human factors and to address crosscutting human factors issues in transportation. HFCC regularly conducts a survey of the DOT modal agencies and other federal agencies with a transportation focus (e.g., the National Transportation Safety Board) to identify cross-cutting DOT research needs. In this panel, the results of a recent survey will be presented with a discussion of how each modal agency is addressing these human factors areas of interest. Additionally, HFCC representatives from five modal agencies will review their current research efforts, discuss their anticipated future research needs, and address questions from the audience.

We report the distance-dependent fluorescence behavior of Au-DNA conjugates prepared by equilibrating the phos-phine-stabilized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of 10-nm size with the designed rigid spacer double-stranded DNA consisting of thiol-modified target and Cy3-labelled complementary probe of different lengths (5 to 20 nm). The products were immobilized onto a MPTMS (3- mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane)-modified glass substrate and were finally excited with a 532-nm laser source. Fluorescence quenching in both solution and solid platforms was assessed via disulfide bond cleavage between Au and DNA-Cy3 using mercaptoethanol. Successful and effective cleavage revealed by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence profiles was achieved in just only a few minutes.

We quantified the user-perceived quality for a VoIP application running in an encrypted wireless network and we experimentally determined the maximum number of parallel VoIP calls that can be achieved, at the best quality of the speech signal. We studied the behaviour of the application for four encryption mechanisms and for each of them we measured the bandwidth waste due to encryption. We used the ITU-T PESQ score to objectively assess the quality of the speech signal. In this paper we present the test setup and the tools we used for our experiments, as well as our experimental results and conclusions.

The key features of the robot are the indoor operation, low costs and easiness to use and to repair. The main issues solved in the present project are about the autonomous navigation using an algorithm for recognizing the surrounding environmental. There is a construction system within the robot, used for applications that need collection and construction. Any person involved in R&D activities is aware about the importance of testing. Depending on the type of R&D field, test associated costs can vary between 25% of the total costs to 80%. The importance of this activity is not always fully understood nor financially supported. Also, the high pressure put on reducing the time to market (TTM) for new products leads to reductions being made sometimes in the detriment of the testing activities. Therefore the efficiency and speed of the testing processes, in different stages of the product development, has to increase with every intended reduction for the TTM. This paper presents an integrated test platform which targets the testing of electronic control units (ECUs) from the automotive field as well as other industrial controllers and hardware solutions. It includes the hardware test equipment and the software tools developed for this purpose.

We investigate the plasmonic responses of gold nanoparticles (AuNP) coated and uncoated on 40nm gold thin film with surrounding medium having different refractive indices using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) ellipsometry. The bulk sensitivities obtained from the measurements in both the cases are found to have same order of magnitude. However SPR dip in case of AuNP coated gold thin film has been shifted to longer wavelength (near IR) as compare to the bare gold thin film under the same environment and condition. Hence, it could provide a good platform to study biomolecular interaction where the absorption of light by the biomolucules is minimal. By monitor the induced changes in polarization state or phase of reflected light from the sample surface, which depend on surface properties of the sample, we use these changes as a sensor signal and compare that with theoretical simulation. This kind of characterization technique is non-destructive, label free and it has high sensitivity and sub-nanometer thickness resolution.

Edge detection plays a significant role in assessing the capability level of the robot's vision. Accurate edge detection leads to better vision. The work in this paper was conducted by the inspiration of the biological concept of mammalian vision. That is, the retina enriches the edges in the view before passing it to the visual cortex in the brain for further processes. Although many works have been done to investigate surrounding this issue, these works are still limited in compare with that exists in retina. In this study, we investigated the main role of horizontal cells for the retina's network toward building a retina-like robot's vision technique. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed algorithm to provide accurate edges in real-time with less noise.
