Bioremediation represents one of the most cost-effective technologies for treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons in contaminated surface soils. A major concern for regulatory agencies when evaluating bioremediation is how to determine acceptable levels for residual organics in soil. Although guidelines have been developed for some organics in soil, limited information is available to define acceptable levels of the metabolites of biological degradation. The products of oxidative degradation are likely to be more water soluble and may also be more toxic. The purpose of the current study was to monitor changes in compound concentration and genotoxicity in soils undergoing bioremediation. The site selected for this study was a former wood-preserving site in the northwestern United States. Soil samples were collected over a 4-year period from two 6075-m2 land treatment units. Conditions for biodegradation were enhanced by the addition of water and nutrients, as well as by frequent tilling to add oxygen. Due to the location of the facility, the temperature was conducive to a more rapid rate of biodegradation for approximately 6 months per year. Soil samples were collected using a grid system and solvent extracted. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were quantified in soil extracts using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and genotoxicity measured using the Salmonella/microsome assay. After 2 years of treatment, concentrations of total and carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were reduced to approximately 10% the concentration in the untreated soil. However, the mean weighted activity of the untreated soil was 293 net revertants per g soil, whereas the extracts of soil collected after 2 years induced a mean weighted activity of 325 net revertants per g soil. Thus, although biodegradation clearly reduced the concentration of total and carcinogenic PAHs in the surface soils, the results from the genotoxicity bioassay indicate that there was a lag in th

This paper develops an objective methodology to test the audio quality of stethoscopes, classifies stethoscopes into five functional categories, and compares the audio performance of each of the five categories. These categories, based on the manufacturers recommended use, are basic assessment, cardiology, disposable, high-end cardiology, and physical assessment. The classification into categories is based on the intended performance of the stethoscopes as provided by the manufacturers. After developing the procedures and running more than 500 tests, the stethoscope with the least amount of loss over the spectrum was chosen from each of the five categories;the five were then compared to one another. Thirty-nine stethoscopes from 11 manufacturers were used in this study. The objective test methodology allows for side-by-side comparison of stethoscopes from various manufacturers that is independent of the manufacturers published test results.

In software engineering domain, SPC is currently utilized only by organizations which have high maturity levels according to the process improvement models like ISO/IEC 15504 and CMMI. In this paper, we present a software tool that we developed to ease and enhance application of SPC especially for emergent organizations. Our tool has facilities to assess the suitability of software processes and metrics for SPC as well as to analyze a software process with respect to its qualifying metrics using SPC techniques like control charts, histograms, bar charts, and pareto charts. In this paper we explain the tool by means of a bug-fixing process of a system and software development organization.

The state of Wisconsin and state of Hawaii are the only states in the nation to have offered MentorNet membership to all public universities and technical colleges. This innovative partnership highlights a new model to launch MentorNet on college campuses. MentorNet, the E-Mentoring Network for Diversity in engineering and Science and an award-winning nonprofit e-mentoring organization, offers a proven effective means to connect students (protégés) in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors with professionals (mentors) in industry, government and higher education. Since mentoring is recognized as an important engagement strategy to encourage women and girls to pursue STEM education and careers, other states can benefit from the story of the Wisconsin and Hawaii collaboration. Hawaii's Maui Economic Development Board and Wisconsin's Milwaukee School of engineering have partnered under a Women in Technology grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service. This grant is to encourage women and girls in rural areas to pursue STEM education and careers. Because students at the Hawaii and Wisconsin partner campuses were enthusiastic about their MentorNet experience, the Women in Technology grant funded a two-year contract to waive membership fees for MentorNet for all four-year and two-year University of Wisconsin system and Wisconsin Technical College system campuses;30 institutions could potentially participate. One of the aims of this program was to encourage more technical/community colleges to partner with MentorNet, broadening the range of mentoring opportunities for the diverse population of students who attend such schools. To promote MentorNet participation in the Wisconsin systems, a collaborative team from Hawaii, Milwaukee School of engineering, MentorNet, the University of Wisconsin system, and the Wisconsin Technical College system held a one-day orientation training in August 2005. The unsteady cavitating flow in a turbopump inducer has been analyzed using CFD simulation results. An accurate three-dimensional detached eddy simulation (DES) code which took into account the cavitating phenomena was used. The three-dimensional code is based on the numerical method for compressible flow using low Mach number flow approximation. The cavitation is modeled by the source/sink of vapor phase in the liquid flow. The code has been applied for cavitating flows in both a 2D cascade and a 3D inducer. The computational results showed similar unsteady behaviors to experimental measurements in terms of the direction in cavity propagations and tendency in cavity developments. Mechanism for the unsteady cavitating flow such as rotating cavitation is investigated by analyzing the numerical results. One model is proposed to describe the reason why the cavity appears to propagate in the forward direction.
