Since the fall of 2000, Michigan Technological University's undergraduate Enterprise program (***) of cross-disciplinary problem solving and product generation has created active learning environments for undergraduate students across campus. Teams of students from a variety of disciplines are given an opportunity to work in a business-like setting to solve real-world engineering problems supplied by industry. Through participation in the program, Enterprise students are able to develop technical competence as well as an understanding of the practical application of skills and knowledge in areas such as communication, business, leadership, teamwork, global competition, and entrepreneurship. Michigan Tech strongly believes that in order to increase the number of students who select to enroll in technical programs, students must be introduced to engineering and science while they are in elementary and secondary school. The hands-on educational model of the Enterprise program has been very successful in generating an excitement about engineering and science at the undergraduate level, so expanding this model to the K-12 system would seem to be a natural progression. Michigan Tech is in the process of working with high school teachers in local school districts to create an Enterprise-like model that builds upon the success of the undergraduate program, yet is tailored for the secondary learning environment. A joint team of MTU and high school faculty and administrators have been working together to develop a precollege-enterprise experience designed to introduce and involve students in engineering and technology. Project based, contextual learning experiences will be the foundation of the program, and are intended to increase the technological awareness of the future workforce. Our goal is to develop and implement a model at the regional level that can be readily transferred to the state and national levels. This paper will summarize the process used

Primary objectives for the International Space Station (ISS) in support of the Vision for Space Exploration include conducting research to counteract the harmful effects of space on human health, test new space technologies, and learn to operate long-duration space missions. In pursuit of these objectives, NASA is interested in closer cooperation between the ISS operational community, scientists, and engineers. To develop the exploration vehicles for missions to the moon and Mars, NASA must test materials, foods, and medicines to ensure their performance in the space environment. These results will enable important decisions on the materials to be used for future space vehicles. Another critical factor for the success on future missions beyond Earth orbit is the capability for repairs of equipment. On the ISS, the practice of crewmembers performing repairs in microgravity will increase our understanding of the repair processes in space;when these capabilities are needed during future space exploration missions, we will have the knowledge and experience to perform them. The ISS is a unique and irreplaceable training ground for building the operational knowledge required to safely conduct future exploration missions, and the growing links within the science, engineering and operations communities are reinforcing the value of that training. Current interactions between the communities that support the ISS have already produced many synergies that are significantly accelerating NASA's advancement towards future exploration missions in support of the Vision.

It is well known that the quality of service provided by a telecommunication network as measured by the probability of blocking decreases rapidly when the incident traffic exceeds the design limits of the network. A higher probability of blocking results in reduced throughput and loss of revenue for the service provider. This paper presents a mechanism that introduces priority in a telephone system with the objective of providing a defined grade of service to priority traffic carrying a higher price tag. The non-priority traffic carries a lower price tag and a lower grade of service. The proposed pricing scheme maintains the overall revenue associated with the network at a constant level over a wide range of incident traffic. © 2006 IEEE.

To ensure te ongoing safe operation of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-3 Orion life-support oxygen system, a system review was completed that included a failure modes and effects analysis combined with an oxygen hazards and fire risk analysis. Though the RAAF P-3 Orion oxygen system has been operational for many years, the results of these analyses clearly identified many deficiencies in the current system configuration, thus demonstrating the value of the formal analysis approach. Design, procedural, maintenance, and material issues were all identified and addressed in the course of this process. This paper provides a brief summary of the analyses performed, the results obtained, risk tables generated, and their use leading to the recommendations for changes incorporated onto RAAF P-3 Orion aircraft that resulted from this work. The Italian Space Agency (ASI) recently decided to put together a satellite subsystem development phase Cost and Time estimating Parametric Model. The model is based on the Complexity Index theory developed by David Bearden applied at subsystem level to a number of ASI satellite programs. For each subsystem technical data as well as cost and schedule data related to the development phases (phase C/D) was collected. The complexity index for each subsystem was them obtained and IRLS (Iteratively Re-weighted Least Squares) regressions were applied to obtain functions that linked the complexity to cost and separately, to development time. The obtained functions were packaged in Excel using visual basic. When using the model to obtain an estimate, the continuous input technical attributes can be specified as distributions in order to generate complexity index distributions and therefore, cost and development time estimate distributions. A treatment consisting of resistance heat treatment and artificial aging was developed to improve the product strength and press formability of Al-Mg-Si alloy sheets having paint bake hardenability used for automobile body panels. In this treatment, the sheets are re-solution heat-treated by resistance heating and water quenching just before the press forming. The formed sheets are artificially aged just after the press forming to increase the product strength. In the experiment, Al-0.60%Si-0.74%Mg (A6061) alloy sheets were chosen. The solution heat treatment of the sheets was sufficiently accomplished by the rapid resistance heat treatment, and the press formability of the sheets was improved. The hardness of formed products is increased by the artificial aging and paint bake hardening. It was found that the present heat treatment is effective in improving the product strength and press formability of the Al-Mg-Si alloy sheets having the paint bake hardenability.

The problem of failure occurrence in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) tends to increase according to their complexity leading to time-consuming tasks as the localisation and repairing. The occurrence of failures during the exploitation stage can deeply modify the FMS performances or its availability. We want to investigate the maintenance integration into a control-monitoring framework, from the control system's early design stage to the maintenance policies execution, so as to improve production time and minimize unplanned costly breakdowns of FMS. This paper proposes a modular and hierarchic control-monitoring-maintenance architecture (CMM) for FMS based on Petri nets with objects (PNO). These efforts acts as a basis for the control architecture of a robot-driven flexible cell, connected to the Ethernet-TCP/IP. © 2006 IEEE.

This work is about different optimal solutions for the unit commitment problem in the Venezuelan hydrothermal power system, disregarding the transmission system. The centralized cost-based maximum net social benefit solution, the oligopoly solution and the unregulated monopoly solution are formulated and analyzed. The oligopoly is studied via Nash-Cournot equilibrium, obtained iteratively considering both price-maker and price-taker firms. The price-demand curves are created using a price-demand elasticity parameter. The hydro plants can be of the run-of-river type or can have a regulation period, like in the case of Guri. In latter case the future profit is represented by a fixed volume of water to be turbined in the day ahead. Since integer variable are necessary to simulate the shut-down, start-up process a mixed integer commercial programming application is employed.
