This paper presents for the first time experimental results on the peristaltic PDMS pump with perfect dynamic valves for both gas and liquid. Micropump consists of the three peristaltic-type actuators and the micro channel connecting with chambers and the inlet/outlet port. Micropump is fabricated by SU8 mold process and the two-step curing process for the irreversible bonding of PDMS layers. The diameter and the thickness of the actuator diaphragm are 1 mm and 98 μm, respectively. The total size of micro pump is about 5 mm x 5.5 mm. The dynamic gas and liquid valve actions of the single actuator are observed to verify effect of the fluidic mass and viscosity of the working fluid. Perfect peristaltic motions and robust pumping actions of the micro pump are confirmed by the flowrate test of micropump with the air and the ink.

Quartz piezoelectric weigh-in-motion (WIM) sensors are potentially appealing because of their low sensitivity to temperature fluctuations, according to information gathered from previous installations in other states. These installations also called into question the durability of the quartz sensors. Some sensors stopped producing a signal even though the sensor installation did not exhibit physical distress. After design changes were made, it was necessary to reevaluate the quartz sensor before any major investment in this technology in Texas. This research was undertaken to evaluate the performance and durability of quartz piezoelectric WIM sensors. To perform this evaluation, researchers instrumented two sites with quartz sensors and collected truck weight and sensor condition data to analyze the accuracy and durability of these sensors. The results of this research show that the sensors meet or exceed the weight accuracy specified by the ASTM specification for Type 1 highway WIM systems. The data further show that the truck weights produced by the WIM system are stable over time with minimal variation due to temperature change. There have been no sensor failures or degradation of the installations to date.

A new class of high brightness and luminance efficiency of poly[2-{4-[5-(3-(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-yl]phenyl}-1, 4-phenylenevinylene] (C10PhOxa-PPV) was synthesized by Gilch polymerization. The weight average molecular weight (Mw) and the polydispersity of C10PhOxa-PPV were found to be 2.7104 and 2.6, respectively. Double-layer light-emitting device with an ITO/PEDOT/C10PhOxa-PPV/Al was fabricated and characterized. The maximum brightness, and luminance efficiency of C10PhOxa-PPV showed values of up to 8.3cd/A and 4,426cd/m2, respectively.

There will be many challenges including the support of new mission navigation approaches such as formation flying and rendezvous in deep space, low-energy and low-thrust orbit transfers, precise landing and ascent vehicles, and autonomous navigation. Innovative strategies and approaches will be needed to develop and field advanced navigation capabilities.

This paper deals with a pyrolyzed polymer as a kind of carbon materials obtained by pyrolysis of polymers. Through the combination of micromachining of polymers and following pyrolysis process, we can obtain pyrolyzed polymer MEMS structures for various applications. This work focuses on pyrolyzed polymer as an absorbent of nitrogen dioxide sensor. The resistance of the developed sensor was dramatically decreased when the sensor was exposed to the NO 2 mixture gas. Through evaluations of dependence on pyrolysis temperature and operating temperature, it is found that higher pyrolysis temperature and higher operating temperature contribute to higher sensitivity against gas mixture of NO 2 .

Recently, we have developed and proposed a new system of the intracellular signal-responsive gene regulation as cell specific gene delivery, and termed the new concept D-RECS. In the present study, we focused IκB kinase that regulates NF-κB activation. According to D-RECS strategy, acrylamide polymers containing a substrate peptide for IκB kinase were designed and synthesized. The synthetic polymers were first examined in the gel retardation assay for IκB kinase β (IKKβ) using recombinant IKKβ. A polymer showed the efficient binding activity for plasmid DNA and significant responses to IKKβ. When the polymer-reporter plasmid DNA complex was transfected into living cells, and then the reporter activity was measured under the condition with or without TNFα stimulation, the gene expression with TNFα was stronger than that without TNFα stimulation. The differences in the reporter activity were found to be well-correlated to the TNFα stimulation.

Gene therapy has been expected as a medical approach to treat tumors, inheritable diseases and so on. For gene therapy, effective delivery of gene to the target tissue is vitally important. Previously, we have proposed a novel approach for gene therapy using a drug delivery system responding to cellular signal (D-RECS), especially to protein kinase C (PKC) α. PKCα plays an important role in the differentiation and proliferation of tumor cell. It was known that extraordinary activation of PKCα is seen in many cancers such as breast cancer, melanoma, liver cancer and so on. In this study, PKCα was used as a target protein kinase for D-RECS.

Visualization based on virtual reality (VR) has gained increasingly wider recognition among transportation engineers and researchers because of advances in computer and VR technologies. The benefits of applying VR in transportation are well documented. However, many technical and financial issues hinder wide acceptance of this new technology in highway engineering design. Therefore, the concept of a custom-built, lightweight visualization system aimed at enhancing highway geometric design processes is developed. Capable of supporting the construction of a three-dimensional (3-D) road surface with accurate geometry and providing vehicle-based navigation with controlled driver perspectives, the visualization system is created by applying open-source VR modeling technology with proven key techniques. A systematic approach was taken to integrate data, create 3-D modules, and implement the visualization system as numerous case studies by using real-world data. The successful implementation proves the design concept, shows great potential for supporting the engineering design process, and opens new opportunities for further development.

A U.S. Navy enterprise methodology has been established for consistent ship self defense operational test and evaluation (OT&E) across all ship classes. A cornerstone of the Navy T&E Enterprise is the Probability of Raid Annihilation (PRA) Testbed. The Navy PRA Testbed implements HLA federated simulations of ship combat system elements against independent, reactive threat raids in a common environment to formulate an overall combat system assessment. The LPD 17 ship class is the first to implement a PRA Testbed baseline as a formal component of ship class OT&E. Products and lessons from the LPD 17 baseline are being transitioned to multiple ship classes including DDG 1000, LHA 6, LCS, and CVN 21. While the PRA Testbed LPD 17 baseline adheres to the Federation Development and Execution Process (FEDEP), conceptual modeling is a particularly distinctive feature. The systems engineering Concept Model (SECM) is an extension of the 'Conceptual Model' product of FEDEP step 2 that broadens the impact of conceptual modeling in the SE process and specifically supports federation Verification, Validation, and Accreditation (VV&A). Accreditation of the PRA Testbed for LPD 17 operational testing is a challenging proposition. The purpose of the SECM is to provide a central documentation tool for stakeholders to 'view' the Testbed capabilities and limitations from multiple perspectives. The SECM is divided into 3 views, which generally follow sequential stages in Testbed systemengineering: system View, Model View, and Federate View. Each view is intended to reveal, address, and resolve a particular class of issues for PRA Testbed accreditation. Explanation of engineering judgments is inclusive to the documentation. The SECM is a not an 'easy button' for making engineering decisions or wishing away limitations. Yet, it does create a framework of deliberate intent for making decisions and accountability for limits in capability. The SECM also establishes a persistent documentation
