This paper presents a method based on image analysis to build models of the skull prosthesis as a premanufacturing process. The method is based on Cubic Bezier Curves as descriptors of the skull bone curvature. The method performs a symbolic representation of shape in order to define the geometric parameters to fit an arc on each Computed Tomography slice. The Bezier descriptors can be used as a template for the retrieval of similar images from medical databases whose parameters match the sampled image. The similarity is measured according to the best fitness values through ABC (Artificial Bee Colony) optimization algorithm. The slices found by similarity are retrieved from different skull images in order to build the 3D model. The 3D printing parameters can be based on images extracted from different medical images to mold a customized piece. A case study shows that the proposed method is a promising technique for 3D modelling.

This work is about different optimal solutions for the unit commitment problem in the Venezuelan hydrothermal power system, disregarding the transmission system. The centralized cost-based maximum net social benefit solution, the oligopoly solution and the unregulated monopoly solution are formulated and analyzed. The oligopoly is studied via Nash-Cournot equilibrium, obtained iteratively considering both price-maker and price-taker firms. The price-demand curves are created using a price-demand elasticity parameter. The hydro plants can be of the run-of-river type or can have a regulation period, like in the case of Guri. In latter case the future profit is represented by a fixed volume of water to be turbined in the day ahead. Since integer variable are necessary to simulate the shut-down, start-up process a mixed integer commercial programming application is employed.

The control of large-scale dynamic systems, such as field robots, requires a more modular and scalable approach than traditional control theory. Recently, we designed modular supervisory controllers for field robots in agricultural applications based on a hybrid system that combines continuous-time and discrete-event systems. We verified that the developed hybrid system could control field robots and observe all the events while meeting the behavioral specifications. In contrast, all possible events cannot be monitored by a supervisor in a real-field robot system because of the presence of sensors, noise, disturbances, and failure. Therefore, in this study, we expanded the modular supervisor presented in previous studies by considering partial observations. Specifically, we proposed a process for designing an appropriate modular supervisor by considering the observability. The experimental results demonstrated that only observable events could cause state changes, verified by dynamic simulations representing a natural field environment. The effects of the proposed hybrid system-based modeling and control methodology are discussed in light of our systematic results. (c) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
