The coatings on fruits after harvested was applied to maintain the appearance and quality up to the consumer's hands. This study aimed to maintain color and reduce the level of decay of salak madu during storage. Salak madu was obtained from Madding Fresh, trader and supplier salak from Sleman, Yogyakarta. The salak was coated with Aloe vera gel (20% and 50%) and beeswax (3, 6, and 10%). All samples were stored at 25-28 °C. The parameters used to measure the effect of treatment are skin color, percentage of decay, and weight loss. Observations were carried out for 12 days. The results of this study were found that dyeing on a coating made from Aloe vera 50% was able to slow down weight loss and percentage of decay until the 6 days, while Aloe vera 30% was better at maintaining color changes during storage. Beeswax 3% coating can slow down discoloration and percentage of decay until 6 days of storage. Long-term storage (12 days) with beeswax 10% was better in maintaining changes in the quality of salak madu, while for short-term storage (6 days), beeswax 3% gives better results. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Similar to other social networking sites, Facebook was not designed for being used by the visually impaired. In research concerning about Facebook's interface, there were many problems the visually impaired using the site via a screen reader. The main issues were about web accessibility and usability. These two major issues impact on travelling through the web site by the visually impaired. This study proposes solutions to the problems by including a new interface design, and implementation of the interface applying most used Facebook's features in order to help the visually impaired surf data or information on Facebook via our new and independent middleware interface.

With the development of machine learning, numerical analysis using neural networks has been devised. Remarkably, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) enable physically consistent numerical analysis by introducing a loss function that conforms to relevant governing equations. Moreover, research is rapidly advancing for the application of PINNs to inverse analysis in areas such as physical property identification. For a PINN to learn governing equations, the weights of the loss functions should be properly determined because they have different roles in components such as boundary conditions, initial conditions, and governing equations. However, weight setting is generally challenging. We propose a loss balancing method considering the procedure for solving partial differential equations. The proposed method is validated through comparisons with conventional solvers. © 2024 IEEE.

Cost of Quality evaluation has become popular in many industries to decrease cost and maintain the quality of products and services. Cost of Quality evaluation is easier to perform in manufacturing industries compared to service industries. The cost of quality of service is more difficult and challenging to evaluate. Cost of quality has been evaluated in some service industries like the water utility. The electric utility industry is one of the more important service industries in industrialized countries where the cost of quality evaluation has not been performed. The objective of this study is to examine the major problems of cost of quality evaluation in the electric utility industry. This study presents a literature review on the major problems of cost of quality evaluation in service industries and compares it with manufacturing industries. A deep sea ROV is desired to be light from the viewpoints of reducing a tension on an underwater cable and possessing the adequate movability by thrusters in water. On the other hand, when moving by a crawler system on the seabed, such a lightweight will influence on its movability characteristics. As an initial investigation experiments using an actual ROV were conducted in a water tank. And it was observed that the ROV ran in wheelie in some cases and almost fell down in extreme case in spite of the fact that it could run stably on land. In order to clarify the results fundamental theory of stability of the ROV in steady running is presented. The theory gives the discriminant chart of stable running for the combination of the center of gravity and the center of buoyancy. Experiments using a model were conducted to verify the theory. In order to increase the stable area and also to change meaningly the center of gravity, this paper proposes a method to virtually increase the weight and to change the center of gravity by using thrusters. And preliminary experiments were conducted to confirm its advantageous effect.

This paper presents the basic application idea of HTS (High-Temperature Superconducting) cable to solve the congestion problem of transmission line limited by voltage stability. In Korea power system, the capability of transmission system is limited by the voltage stability, and the HTS cable could be one of the countermeasures to enhance the transfer limit as its higher current capacity and lower impedance. However, the quench characteristic of HTS cable not only makes HTS cable to lose its superconductivity, but also change the line impedance and power system operating condition dramatically. This phenomenon threats the HTS cable safety as well as power system security, therefore a proper protection scheme and security control countermeasures have to be established before HTS cable implementation. In this paper, the quench characteristics of HTS cable for the fault current based on heat balance equation was established and a proper protection method by FCL (Fault Current Limiter) was suggested.

Underwater high-precision positioning is the basis of safe sailing and smooth operation for underwater autonomous vehicle (AUV). With the continuous expansion of marine surveys, the requirements for navigation accuracy of AUVs are also increasing. As the unscented Kalman filter (UKF)-based terrain matching method can meet the high-precision positioning demand of underwater navigation, it becomes one of the hot research content in recent years. However, due to the insufficient robustness of UKF algorithm, under the condition of non-additive state noise, the initial distribution of Sigma points is prone to be unreasonable, which will reduce filter accuracy and even cause the recursive result divergence. In order to improve the accuracy and robustness of the underwater terrain matching algorithm, this paper introduces the method of nonlinear filtering state expansion. The system noise and measurement noise information are added into the system state matrix and the variance matrix, and obtains the state expansion UKF-based terrain matching algorithm. Since the noise and the estimation parameters are both participating in the filtering operation, the inaccurate prediction influence of initial noise can be reduced, and finally improves the accuracy and applicability of the underwater terrain matching algorithm. © 2019 IEEE.

Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) potential in central American and Caribbean regions: A multicriteria analysis for optimal sites

This study presents a comprehensive basin-wide assessment of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) potential in Central America and the Caribbean region, integrating high-resolution oceanographic data from the Copernicus Marine Service with advanced technoeconomic modelling. The analysis employs a multicriteria approach combining thermal resource assessment, technical feasibility evaluation, and detailed economic analysis across the entire Caribbean Basin. The results identify several high-potential areas, particularly along Mexico's Caribbean coast, the Greater Antilles (notably Cuba's southeastern coast), and the Lesser Antilles chain, with temperature differentials reaching over 25 °C in high-potential areas and maintaining levels consistently above 24 °C year-round. For utility-scale OTEC plants, the analysis reveals potential annual electricity generation ranging from 400 to 933 GWh/year per territory, with optimal levelized cost of energy (LCOE) values between 120 and 350 $/MWh at the most favourable locations and net power efficiencies of 2.5–3 %. The study quantifies key technical parameters and identifies five distinct regional clusters with varying characteristics, suggesting the need for tailored implementation strategies. Economic analysis indicates that heat exchangers and cold-water pipes represent approximately 55.4 % of the total CAPEX, whereas Monte Carlo risk assessment reveals that project viability is most sensitive to capital cost variations and capacity factor uncertainties. The research demonstrated high plant availability, with capacity factors exceeding 85 % in optimal locations, suggesting that OTEC could serve as a viable baseload renewable energy option for many Caribbean territories. This comprehensive assessment provides a robust framework for evaluating OTEC potential in tropical maritime regions while offering actionable insights for policymakers and energy planners considering OTEC as part of their renewable energy portfolio.

A T-shaped plasmonic array is proposed for application as an effective thermal emitter or biosensor. The reflection and thermal radiation properties of a T-shaped array are investigated theoretically. The angular dependent reflectance spectrum shows a clear resonant dip at 0.36eV for full polar angles. No other significant localized resonant mode is found in the investigated spectral range from 0.12eV to 0.64eV. According to the Kirchhoff s law, the thermal radiation of the proposed structure can lead to a sharp peak at 3.5 νm with low sideband emission. We have also found that the T-shaped structure filled with organic material such as PMMA with different thicknesses (10 nm -50 nm) can lead to significant shift of the resonance wavelength. Thus, the T-shaped structure can also be used as a good sensor for organic materials. © 2009 Optical Society of America.

Security and privacy are central issues for the acceptance of online payment methods in particular and growth of the Internet market in general. Public key infrastructure and X.509 certificates have been established as the most trustworthy methods for assuring security in online transactions. This paper proposes a new approach for increasing security by avoiding privacy violation using X.509 version 3 certificate private extensions and storing the certificate and its corresponding private key in the smartcard. The private key never leaves the smartcard and can be used for decryption and signing only after successful personal identification number presentation. The proposed approach is compared with secure electronic transaction (SET) protocol.
