Ecotoxicity of micro- and nanoplastics on aquatic algae: Facts, challenges, and future opportunities

The production of plastic has exponentially increased in recent years, leading to the release of millions of tons of plastic waste into the environment annually. This waste can break down into smaller micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) that are toxic and reactive to life forms, including humans. MNPs are particularly concerning for marine biologists and environmental scientists due to their toxic impacts on aquatic organisms, including algae, which are the foundation of the food chain. The review provides a comprehensive overview of the (eco)toxicity assessment of MNPs on aquatic algal communities, highlighting the novel insights gained into the ecotoxicity of various MNPs on algae and the associated health risks for aquatic ecosystems, food chains, and humans. This article also discusses current challenges and future research opportunities to address these challenges, making it a valuable contribution to the field of environmental science. Overall, this work is one of the first efforts to comprehensively assess the effects of MNPs on aquatic algae, emphasizing the significant risks that MNPs pose to essential ecosystems and human health. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Preparing Cd3As2, which is a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal in certain crystal orientation, on Si is highly desirable as such a sample may well be fully compatible with existing Si CMOS technology. However, there is a dearth of such a study regarding Cd3As2 films grown on Si showing the chiral anomaly. Here, for the first time, we report the novel preparation and fabrication technique of a Cd3As2 (112) film on a Si (111) substrate with a ZnTe (111) buffer layer which explicitly shows the chiral anomaly with a nontrivial Berry’s phase of π. Despite the Hall carrier density ( n 3 D ≈ 9.42 × 10 17 cm−3) of our Cd3As2 film, which is almost beyond the limit for the portents of a 3D Dirac semimetal to emerge, we observe large linear magnetoresistance in a perpendicular magnetic field and negative magnetoresistance in a parallel magnetic field. These results clearly demonstrate the chiral magnetic effect and 3D Dirac semimetallic behavior in our silicon-based Cd3As2 film. Our tailoring growth of Cd3As2 on a conventional substrate such as Si keeps the sample quality, while also achieving a low carrier concentration. © 2024 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The critical minerals industries in Indonesia may pose possible environmental and human health risks due to the release of pollutants into soil, water, and air, as well as the use of materials and energy. This study investigates the possible environmental and human health impacts of Indonesia's nickel, gold, copper, tin, and bauxite mining and processing industries. This study utilizes the latest version of the OpenLCA software, version 2.0, in combination with the Ecoinvent 3.8 database. To evaluate potential environmental consequences and health effects on humans, CML-IA Baseline and Environmental Priority Strategies (EPS) are employed in product development. The EPS system was developed utilizing a hierarchical methodology with the objective of furnishing the product developer with data regarding the financial impact of human health impairment resulting from a particular product development. The production of one tonne of gold, nickel, bauxite, tin, and copper results in the emission of 7.34.E+07, 4.61.E+04, 3.10.E+04, 1.02.E+04, 8.01.E+03 kg CO₂ eq/t, respectively, contributing to global warming. This production is associated with asthma cases of 7.79.E+01 (gold industry), 2.21.E−03 (copper industry), 1.81.E−03 (tin industry), 9.21.E−04 (nickel industry), and 4.71.E−06 (bauxite industry) Personyears/t. Electricity consumption and the release of carbon dioxide are the main factors contributing to global warming. The primary cause of asthma cases is the utilization of fuel oil and electricity. Power plant chimneys can employ various technologies, such as cyclones, bag filters, and scrubbers, to mitigate the release of polluting gas emissions. The critical mineral industry must prioritize handling and governing of steam power facilities to minimize their negative effects on the environment and human health. © 2024 The Authors

Precooling of air entering an air-conditioner condenser by cooling water from an open-pond via an inline or staggered tube bank heat exchanger

Precooling air entering a 2TR 134a air-conditioner condenser under a Chiang Mai climate via an inline or staggered tube bank heat exchanger to enhance the unit’s cooling performance was theoretically investigated. The cooling water was sourced from a 5 m x 5 m x 1 m open pond, with various ratios of surface area to depth (A/D) between 15 to 25, and an initial temperature of 23 °C at 8 a.m. In the context of office buildings, an A/D ratio of 25 with a 25 m3 water volume was identified as the minimum appropriate value since on the following morning, the pond’s temperature could potentially revert to its level from the prior day after serving as a heat sink during the daytime in April, which is the hottest month. The tube bank heat exchangers had a tube diameter of 15.88 mm. For each configuration, there were four rows in the flow direction, totaling 164, 136, and 104 tubes, with longitudinal and transversal pitch ratios set at 1.25, 1.5, and 2, respectively. The daily average electrical power savings of the air-conditioner was found to be 18.69%, 13.69%, and 8.53%, respectively, for the staggered tube bank configuration and 18.2%, 12.48%, and 7.11%, respectively, for the inline design.

Gejlek or Galah is a conventional wood-made seed planting tools aid common used by corn farmers. The limited functions and heavy weight of the existing seed planting caused low productivity and long duration in planting activity. The aim of the research is to design and to develop seed planting tools which able to accommodate user needs. User-Centered Design (UCD) methods used to design product focused on customer satisfaction. 15 respondents involved in this research to measure productivity, practicality, reliability and ergonomic. Validity test represent by F-value produce result test in between 0.354 to 0.625 where Ftest > Ftab means reject H0 or seed planting tools design able to fulfil user needs and different from previous design. User test show how work load against pulse measurement improve 26.44% and Nordic Body Map decrease by average 25% which mean there are significant improvement in terms of work load and ergonomics. In recent years, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) becomes one of the most suitable solutions to fulfil world primary eco-friendly energy demand. Consequently, bunkering ship is designed to charge liquefied gas with the increasing need for natural gas. Due to the extremely dangerous and cryogenic cargo, the design of LNG bunkering ship requires very high-level structural design/analysis technologies rather than conventional ships. Therefore, this paper describes a general procedure of the structural safety assessment for the independent type C tank of LNG bunkering ship. Size selection of an inline tube bank heat exchanger with an electric field for air cooling of an air-conditioner condenser

Air precooling before entering the condenser of an air-conditioner increases the cooling performance of the unit. A better heat transfer coefficient could lower the temperature of air leaving a heat exchanger, resulting in a higher COP for a refrigeration cycle. In this study, an electrohydrodynamic (EHD) technique for heat transfer enhancement of air flowing in a square inline tube bank under laminar forced convection was investigated. The tube bank had 10 rows with 155 mm diameter tubes with air flowing normal to the tubes. The pitch ratios of the center-to-center spacing between tubes and tube diameter ST/D=SL/D were set at 2, 3 and 4. High DC voltage pulses, between 7-17 kV, were supplied to a set of wires installed at the center of the square tubes and tube bank served as electrodes with positive and negative polarities, respectively. The tube bank surface temperature was set at 30 °C, while the inlet air temperature was varied between 40-50°C. It was found that smaller pitch ratios yielded lower outlet air temperatures. Additionally, with an electric field, a better heat transfer coefficient was obtained. Then, the outlet air temperature could be further reduced. At an inlet air temperature of 40 °C, with a tube bank having ST/D=SL/D=3.0 and an entering air velocity of 0.2 m/s, when the outlet air temperature was not set to a value greater than 32 °C, the number of tube columns was only 2 for a 16.5 kV supplied voltage compared with 10 for the tube bank with no electric field. This means that 80% of the total area could be reduced using an appropriate EHD voltage.

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an immunomodulatory cytokine critical for intestinal immune homeostasis. IL-10 is produced by various immune cells but IL-10 receptor signaling in intestinal CX₃CR1⁺ mononuclear phagocytes is necessary to prevent spontaneous colitis in mice. Here, we utilized fluorescent protein reporters and cell-specific targeting and found that Rorc-expressing innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) produce IL-10 in response to anti-CD40-mediated intestinal inflammation. Deletion of Il10 specifically in Rorc-expressing ILCs led to phenotypic changes in intestinal macrophages and exacerbated both innate and adaptive immune-mediated models of experimental colitis. The population of IL-10⁺ producing ILCs shared markers with both ILC2 and ILC3 with nearly all ILC3s being of the NCR⁺ subtype. Interestingly, Ccl26 was enriched in IL-10⁺ ILCs and was markedly reduced in IL-10-deficient ILC3s. Since CCL26 is a ligand for CX₃CR1, we employed RNA in situ hybridization and observed increased numbers of ILCs in close proximity to Cx3cr1-expressing cells under inflammatory conditions. Finally, we generated transgenic Rorc^tdTomato reporter mice that faithfully marked RORγt⁺ cells that could rescue disease pathology and aberrant macrophage phenotype following adoptive transfer into mice with selective Il10 deficiency in ILC3s. These results demonstrate that IL-10 production by a population of ILCs functions to promote immune homeostasis in the intestine possibly via direct effects on intestinal macrophages. © 2025 The Author(s)

Perovskite material is considered as one of next-generation solar cells that will have good potential to replace the current silicon-based solar cells. However, several disadvantages still limit the application of this materials due to the unstable phase, crystal defects during fabrication, toxic, and susceptible to cell degradation upon humidity and ultraviolet exposure. Several methods and engineering works have been made to overcome those disadvantages including doping, a technique which induces element(s) or compound(s) that could obtain better performance. One of the promising elements is cesium (Cs) that can be doped as a cation, compound or additive which would alter the interface between the electron-selective layer and the strain of perovskite structure. By having this element, the improved higher efficiency and operation stability can be significantly expected. This review article summarizes the efforts have been carried out by researchers working on Cesium doping on the perovskite solar cell towards high efficiency and operational stability. In has been found up to present that the best Cesium cation doping was able to bring up the improvement of efficiency up to 23,71%.
