Nonlinear Analysis of Axi-Symmetric Solid Using Vector Mechanics

In this work nonlinear analysis of axi-symmetric solid using vector mechanics is performed, in which a triangular solid unit developed in compliance with the concept of vector form analysis is proposed. The vector form analysis uses point value description (rather than function) to describe motion and configuration of solid, which has governing equation directly formulated with respect to each mass point (particle). The point value description includes particles allocation for configuration and defining path elements for particle motion. In addition, constitutive conditions are properly defined to complete the formulation. The constitutive conditions linking the mass points in deformable solids are primarily complemented by the generalized forces evaluated by a solid unit which is developed in a set of physical modeling procedures. Along each path element, particle motion is described by Newton's law of motion for free particles or by prescribed path for constrained particles. Implementations of vector form analysis presented herein are carried out employing the solution steps of vector form intrinsic finite element (VFIFE). Numerical examples with behaviors of large deformation, nonlinear material properties, and contact for benchmark verifications are performed to demonstrate the capability and accuracy of the approach developed under the framework of vector form analysis.

The increasing prevalence of deep hoaxes, such as fake news and phishing schemes, poses a significant threat to cybersecurity, undermining trust and spreading misinformation. In Indonesia, surveys indicate that more than 60% of people exposed to hoax news believe that it is true, emphasizing the urgent need for robust detection methods. Traditional cybersecurity approaches often struggle to keep pace with the growing scale and sophistication of these attacks. To address this challenge, this research investigates the use of deep learning techniques, specifically focusing on text-based hoax detection in the Indonesian language. The study fine-tunes IndoBERT, a pretrained deep learning model optimized for Indonesian text, to enhance the accuracy and scalability of hoax detection. The IndoBERT model was trained on a balanced dataset of 29,552 articles, comprising both hoax and real news content, collected from the Mafindo API and Kaggle's Indonesia News Dataset. The model was fine-tuned using supervised learning and evaluated using several key metrics, including accuracy, F1-score, precision, and recall. The results demonstrate that IndoBERT outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches, achieving an accuracy of 98.51%, an F1-score of 98.44%, and a precision of 98.23% on the test set. These results highlight the effectiveness of IndoBERT for hoax detection, which offers a scalable solution to improve cybersecurity defenses against deceptive content. This research contributes to the integration of advanced deep learning models into cybersecurity systems, addressing the evolving landscape of cyber threats.

This work proposes variational autoencoders (VAEs) to predict a vehicle’s jerk from a given torque demand, addressing the limitations of sparse real-world datasets. Specifically, we implement unconditional and conditional VAEs to generate jerk signals that integrate features from different drivetrain scenarios. The VAEs are trained on experimental data collected from two variants of a fully electric SUV, which differ in maximum torque delivery and drivetrain configuration. New meaningful jerk signals are generated within an engineering context through the interpretation of the VAE’s latent space. A performance comparison with baseline physics-based and hybrid models confirms the effectiveness of the VAEs. We show that VAEs bypass the need for exhaustive manual system parametrization while maintaining physical plausibility by conditioning data generation on specific inputs. © 2025, CC BY.

The dynamic impact of liquid drops on rigid surfaces can be found in numerous practical applications, including spray cooling, inkjet printing, spray coating, airplane wings, and steam turbine blade. Notably, the post-impact dynamics can affect the robustness and durability of the impacted surfaces by causing erosion or degradation. This study experimentally and numerically investigates the impact forces on cylindrically curved superhydrophobic (C-SHPo) surfaces across a wide range of Weber number (We = 50 − 175) and cylinder diameter (3 − 20 mm). The results show two distinct peaks in the impact force: the one originating from the inertial impact of the drop and the other from the pressure rise during the retraction motion. Initial peak force increases with We owing to higher inertial effect, whereas the second peak force shows unexpected behavior on small C-SHPo surfaces: the second peak force increases with We first then it decreases again if We is greater than the certain Weber numbers. Based on the three-dimensional direct numerical simulation, it is found that the reduced contact area resulted from the detached and fingered parts of drop plays a major role in the reduced second peak force on small C-SHPo surfaces.

Unveiling socio-psychological determinants behind residential treated greywater adoption: Integrating theory of planned behavior and norm activation model

Persistent water scarcity and resource degradation threaten urban water security, driving water utilities to promote alternative sources such as residential treated greywater (RTG) as a sustainable solution. However, public resistance remains the primary barrier to the long-term and widespread implementation of any water reuse initiative. Hence, it is paramount to gain exhaustive insights into the motivations and mechanisms behind voluntary RTG adoption behavior, contributing to devising more impactful strategies for promoting such initiatives. Although environmental psychology has laid a robust groundwork in understanding pro-environmental behaviors and identifying entry points of behavioral intervention, a notable gap persists in RTG research, particularly in the Middle East, such as Iran. Hence, this research sought to explore the psychosocial drivers underlying households' RTG adoption through introducing an innovative theoretical framework that integrates the theory of planned behavior with the norm activation model, further extended by perceived risk and anticipated emotions (guilt and pride). A questionnaire was developed based on an extensive literature review and distributed in Isfahan City via an online self-administered survey, utilizing a blend of convenience sampling and cluster sampling techniques (N = 375). Data analysis was conducted using PLS-SEM with SmartPLS software, revealing that: (1) the framework explained 74.7 % and 73.3 % of the variance in intention and behavior; (2) attitude manifested as the most significant determinant of intention, followed by moral norms, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control (PBC), and perceived risk; and (3) behavior was predicted by intention, perceived risk, and PBC. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting millions of people worldwide. It is a chronic eye condition that damages the optic nerve and, if left untreated, can lead to vision loss and a decreased quality of life. Therefore, there is a need to explore practical and reliable mechanisms for glaucoma identification. This study systematically reviews deep-learning approaches for glaucoma identification using retinal fundus images from 2018 to 2024. Compared to existing survey studies, we cover the latest research, including several public retinal fundus image datasets, and focus on segmentation, classification based on convolutional neural networks and vision transformers, and explainability. The findings of this study, including comparisons of existing methods and key insights, will assist researchers and developers in identifying the most suitable techniques for glaucoma detection. © 2025 The Authors

WCO is a second-generation biofuel made up of accumulated free fatty acids, which can be used as feedstock for biodiesel production. The review aims to: (a) evaluate the sustainability of waste cooking oil (WCO) for biodiesel production in Indonesia using life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) methods;(b) explain the challenges, development, recommendation, and industrial potential of WCO for biodiesel production in Indonesia;and (c) determine the sustainability concept of WCO for biodiesel production. This study was carried out by reviewing papers related to LCSA which include Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA), and Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA). The review found that the WCO collection, pretreatment, and transesterification processes have the biggest environmental impact caused by the use of chemicals, catalysts, and electrical energy from fossil fuels. According to the LCCA results, WCO-based biodiesel production has a high economic potential and is more practicable due to lower raw material and production costs than biodiesel from edible and non-edible plants. Meanwhile, the SLCA aspect emphasizes that the WCO-based biodiesel industry must consider social indicators such as employment provision, human rights, human health impact, working conditions, local community impact, cultural heritage, socio-economic repercussions, governance, and large accident risk. There are several recommendations that can be made to develop WCO-based biodiesel, namely the government must demonstrate political commitment by promoting WCO as a national energy source feedstock. The sustainable concept has three pillars: environmental, economic, and social. These pillars must simultaneously direct every stage of the WCO production process. To produce high-quality biodiesel, the government must support all of these stages, establish regulations and governance for WCO supply and the WCO processing industry, and provide implementable R&D, adequate funding

Condensation on aerosol particles: Boundary element formulation

Local and global condensation rates of particles of arbitrary shapes are of interest in the studies of aerosol. The present paper is a follow-up on some recent work (Loyalka and Griffin, 1993, Nucl. Sci. Engng 114, 135;1994, J. Aerosol Sci. 25, 509;Griffin and Loyalka, 1994, J. Aerosol Sci. 25, 1271) where it was shown that the relevant diffusion equation, with continuum and near-continuum boundary conditions, can be converted to an integral equation and then solved by a quadrature technique. Here the focus is on the application of a boundary element formulation to the integral equation. This numeric formulation is verified against analytical solutions for a spherical and a spheroidal particle. The formulation is then applied to a study of condensation on two wetted spheres with a liquid meniscus between them. Both the local and global condensation rates are calculated and the utility of an equivalent sphere approach is explored.

Interest in the two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) continues to intensify, driven by their suitable band gaps to supplant silicon as next-generation semiconductor materials. Among various TMDs, tungsten diselenide (WSe2) is renowned for its superior electrical properties in carrier density and mobility under ambient conditions. Despite its notable attributes, the behavior of monolayer WSe2 in the electron-doped regime under cryogenic conditions remains largely uncharted, particularly concerning its magnetotransport properties. In this study, we reveal the transport mechanisms of monolayer WSe2 from high temperatures down to the cryogenic regime. As evident by Efros–Shklovskii variable-range hopping (E-S VRH) in the cryogenic regime, strong Coulomb interactions arise between electrons. Above 8 K, an uncommon nonsaturated quadratic large magnetoresistance (MR) can be explained by the wave-function shrinkage model, which is consistent with the E-S VRH transport mechanism. Notably, the nonsaturated quadratic large MR shows a magnitude up to 1740% at 13 T. These findings underscore the potential applications for monolayer WSe2 in cryogenic field-effect devices, magnetic sensors, and memory devices and mark a significant advance in magnetotransport research.
