Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative tauopathy associated with repetitive head impact (RHI) exposure. Genetic variation in the 17q21.31 region, containing microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT), has been implicated in tauopathies but has not been investigated in CTE. The region includes a megabase-long inversion (H1/H2) and copy-number variations, including α, β, and γ segments, which can be characterized as nine segregating structural haplotypes. We leveraged array SNP data and a reference panel across the 17q21.31 region to impute structural haplotypes and test their association with CTE endophenotypes in 447 European ancestry brain donors with RHI exposure. The H1β1γ1 haplotype was significantly associated with dementia and semi-quantitative tau burden in multiple cortical and medial temporal regions commonly affected in CTE. H1β1γ1 differential expression analyses in dorsolateral frontal cortex implicated cis-acting genes and inflammatory pathways. Taken together, the H1β1γ1 haplotype may help explain CTE heterogeneity among those with similar RHI exposure. © 2025 The Authors

The Application of Fuzzy Logic Method in the Debtors Eligibility Assessment system of Microfinance Institution

Decision-making processes in determining loan eligibility are often subjective which leads to imprecise credit predictions. Due to inaccurate inquiry on prospective customers done by field survey officers of Bank Perkreditan Rakyat (BPR) Bandung City, it has experienced credit complications such as bad credits. Therefore, this study aims to help decision-makers in determining creditworthiness and preventing bad credits from occurring. To realize this solution, the study uses the Fuzzy Logic method to calculate the creditworthiness of each prospective loaner based on the inquiries done in the field survey. Fuzzy Logic is known to be a 'counting' methodology with varying words. In addition, it can implement human expertise into machine language with ease and adequately. Based on numerous testing performed, the results demonstrate a level of 90% in accuracy when inputting within the valid ranges of each fuzzy set and membership function. However, the level of accuracy is only based on the clarification result which is determined by a researcher and BPR director, not a general level of accuracy for other microfinance institutions. Nevertheless, the findings of this study prove the method has a high enough accuracy to support decision-makers in determining the loan eligibility of prospective loaners and through this application in the surveying process, survey workers can work more efficiently. Hence, in future has a higher chance of predicting bad credits from potential loaners.

Fire is a major type of disturbance that has important influences on ecosystem dynamics and carbon *** our understanding of ecosystem fires and their carbon cycle consequences is still limited,largely due to the difficulty of large-scale fire monitoring and the complex interactions between fire,vegetation,climate,and anthropogenic ***,using data from satellite-derived fire observations and ecosystem model simulations,we performed a comprehensive investigation of the spatial and temporal dynamics of China’s ecosystem fire disturbances and their carbon emissions over the past two decades(1997–2016).Satellite-derived results showed that on average about 3.47-4.53×10^(4) km^(2) of the land was burned annually during the past two decades,among which annual burned forest area was about 0.81-1.25×10^(4) km^(2),accounting for 0.33-0.51%of the forest area in *** burning emitted about 23.02 TgC per *** to satellite products,simulations from the Energy Exascale Earth system Land Model(ELM)strongly overestimated China’s burned area and fire-induced carbon *** burned area and fire-induced carbon emissions were high for boreal forest in Northeast China’s Daxing’anling region and subtropical dry forest in South Yunnan,as revealed by both the satellite product and the model *** results suggest that climate and anthropogenic factors play critical roles in controlling the spatial and seasonal distribution of China’s ecosystem fire *** findings highlight the importance of multiple complementary approaches in assessing ecosystem fire disturbance and its carbon *** studies are required to improve the methods of observing and modelling China’s ecosystem fire disturbances,which will provide valuable information for fire management and ecosystem sustainability in an era when both human activities and the natural environment are rapidly changing.

Cryptography is a science that studies how to keep data or messages safe when sent, from sender to recipient without interference from third parties. This paper presents a comparison of cryptographic algorithms of simetris keys and asymmetric keys. Cryptographic research related journals are collected and analyzed to find the correct comparison of cryptographic algorithms to implement. The results of this study, namely: symmetric and asymmetric keys have differences in the process of encryption and decryption. There are many cryptographic algorithms that can be applied to symmetric and asymmetric keys, but the selection and use of certain algorithms cannot be said to be forever the best because they depend on the circumstances encountered in developing the applied system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Along with the development of information technology today, the development of information systems is also increasing. Organizations and personal competitions to make an information system. A reliable information system is produced by a team that has the ability to design, design and validate. With the increasing number of students at XYZ College and limited existing building facilities then one of the solutions that will be applied is the development of e-learning system to support teaching and learning activities. One important element in project management is determining the organizational model to be used. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the organization model is effective to manage the e-learning system project in the PT. The research method used is literature study and interviews with key stakeholders, especially leaders of universities. The results show that the effective organizational model for the blended learning information system project is to use functional organizational structure, since functional organization is more appropriate for small to medium scale projects, focusing on the division of tasks based on the function of each part, the difficulty level is low and the limitationof resources. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Review of the use of mangrove forests in supporting the socio-economic life of fishing communities

Mangrove forests have an important function in human life that cannot be replaced by other functions. The existence of mangrove forests has six main functions, namely biological, ecological, physical, social, economic and chemical functions. This article discusses the description of mangrove forest management in meeting the needs of the economic and social functions of the fishing communities on the coast of Merauke Regency, Papua Province, which were reviewed descriptively using relevant literature studies. In terms of economic function, mangrove forests provide economic value for fishing communities because mangrove forests become habitat for crabs, fish and other marine biota that are captured and sold as the main source of family income. In addition, the use of mangrove forests by fishermen on the coast is used as firewood and building materials. The high utilization of mangrove forests by coastal communities that ignores ecological sustainability causes damage to mangrove forests that threatens the sustainability of ecological functions. Damage to mangrove forests in Merauke in the period 2000-2005 was recorded as wide as 2,416 ha while in the 2005-2010 period damage reached 2,233 ha of the total area of the Merauke mangrove forest which reached 216,001.95 Ha or 6.98% of the Merauke forest area. Based on this, the management of mangrove forest utilization needs to get more attention from various parties so that the ecological function of mangrove forests as a condition of sustainable development, especially for fishing communities on the coast, can be realized in Merauke Regency.

Induction motor slip ring-type technology has been widely used in industrial as one of the crucial electrical components to convert energy mechanically. The construction of this motor is more complex than other standardized induction motors such as squirrel cage. The complexity lies in the connection between the rings and brushes which requires more maintenance. Meanwhile, Squirrel cage motor that is supported by a Variable Speed Drive allows its user to start motor smoothly and adjusts the speed more efficiently. In this study, we exclusively investigate the possibility of the outdated technology replacement by using squirrel cage standardized induction motor based on its compatibility and the financial perspective as well. To prevent any coming up problems, the selections of new motor and VSD must fulfil the requirement of the existing system. Technical data were collected from customer's SCADA and nameplates. While the financial calculation was made based on the payback period. In this case, the payback period is projected within two years and the energy saving could reach 69% that basically depends on operation patterns. According to our perspective, standard squirrel cage motor potentially replaces the slip ring motor in which it is not only having a simple operation but also less maintenance and energy cost.

This research addresses the impact of the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) solutions on the performance of a residential building with the area of 2247 m2 at different regions of Coastal Anatolia. Three cities are chosen with respect to their solar heat gain as the lowest, highest and average. Hourly performances are calculated using the DOE software of Energyplus and installed peak PV power calculated as 84.2 kW. Our preliminary results showed that the annual heating and cooling energy consumption for the three locations vary between 1.44 kWh/m2-9.12 kWh/m2 and 22.2 kWh/m2-56.9 kWh/m2, respectively. The cooling demand is much higher than the heating demand for these coastal locations of Anatolia (as expected). The maximum use of the three cities is 56.9 kWh/m2 and according to results this load can be easily supplied by an 84.2 kWp PV. As these are preliminary results they can be treated within margins of ± 20 kW depending on the orientation of the building facades and the type of the solar cells. © 2018 IEEE.

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted much attention in recent years due to the infinite quality factor (Q-factor) resonance and extremely localized field. In this study, BICs have been demonstrated by dielectric metasurfaces with hybrid surface lattice resonance (SLR) in the experiment. By breaking the symmetry of geometry, SLR can be easily switched between BICs and quasi-BICs. Comparing with literature, switching between BICs and quasi-BICs is usually accompanied by wavelength shift. Here, a design rule is proposed to prevent the wavelength shift when the Q-factor is changing. Also, such a design also makes subsequent identification of the laser threshold more credible. Due to the high Q-factor, low threshold laser is one of the intuitive applications of BICs. Utilize the high localized ability of BICs, low threshold BICs laser can be achieved by the dielectric metasurface immersed with Rhodamine 6G. Interestingly, due to the high Q-factor resonance of BICs, the laser signals and images can be observed in almost transparent samples. Not only the BICs laser is demonstrated in the experiment, but also the mechanism of BICs is deeply analyzed. This study can help readers better understand this novel feature of BICs, and provide the way for engineer BICs metasurfaces. The device can provide various applications, including laser, optical sensing, non-linear optics enhancement, and single-photon source. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Learning Bone Suppression from Dual Energy Chest X-rays using Adversarial Networks

Suppressing bones on chest X-rays such as ribs and clavicle is often expected to improve pathologies classification. These bones can interfere with a broad range of diagnostic tasks on pulmonary disease except for musculoskeletal system. Current conventional method for acquisition of bone suppressed X-rays is dual energy imaging, which captures two radiographs at a very short interval with different energy levels;however, the patient is exposed to radiation twice and the artifacts arise due to heartbeats between two shots. In this paper, we introduce a deep generative model trained to predict bone suppressed images on single energy chest X-rays, analyzing a finite set of previously acquired dual energy chest X-rays. Since the relatively small amount of data is available, such approach relies on the methodology maximizing the data utilization. Here we integrate the following two approaches. First, we use a conditional generative adversarial network that complements the traditional regression method minimizing the pairwise image difference. Second, we use Haar 2D wavelet decomposition to offer a perceptual guideline in frequency details to allow the model to converge quickly and efficiently. As a result, we achieve state-of-the-art performance on bone suppression as compared to the existing approaches with dual energy chest X-rays. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.
