Background: Improving the accessibility of screening diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD) are two major challenges in the field of diabetes care. We aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning system to detect DKD and isolated diabetic nephropathy from retinal fundus images. Methods: In this population-based study, we developed a retinal image-based AI-deep learning system, DeepDKD, pretrained using 734 084 retinal fundus images. First, for DKD detection, we used 486 312 retinal images from 121 578 participants in the Shanghai Integrated Diabetes Prevention and Care system for development and internal validation, and ten multi-ethnic datasets from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK (65 406 participants) for external validation. Second, to differentiate isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, we used 1068 retinal images from 267 participants for development and internal validation, and three multi-ethnic datasets from China, Malaysia, and the UK (244 participants) for external validation. Finally, we conducted two proof-of-concept studies: a prospective real-world study with 3 months' follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of DeepDKD in screening DKD;and a longitudinal analysis of the effectiveness of DeepDKD in differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD on renal function changes with 4·6 years' follow-up. Findings: For detecting DKD, DeepDKD achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0·842 (95% CI 0·838–0·846) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·791–0·826 across external validation datasets. For differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, DeepDKD achieved an AUC of 0·906 (0·825–0·966) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·733–0·844 across external validation datasets. In this study, we demonstrated a novel technique in selective absorption spectra (AS), on a transparent glass (GT) formed by self-assembled Nanoparticle array (SANP) and observed a narrow band absorption in the green wavelength region. The single layer deposition on a transparent glass is achieved by using the in-house developed self-assembly deposition technique. A theoretical model for describing the emission spectra of microsphere cavities is presented, and its predictions of detailed lineshapes of emission spectra associated with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of various orders in ZnO microspheres (MSs) are verified experimentally by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The interplay of Purcell effect, quality factor, and leaky modes in spontaneous and stimulated emission spectra related to WGMs of all orders is revealed. The key success of the theory is based on the expansion of the full Green function of the MS in terms of all possible resonance modes in complex frequency space, which allows incorporation of contributions from leaky modes, stimulated emission processes, and Purcell effect. We show that the spontaneous emission spectrum calculated according to Mie theory (without Purcell effect) is dominated by the contribution of leaky modes, while the spontaneous and stimulated emission enhanced by Purcell effect are responsible for the main WGM resonance peaks observed experimentally. It is found that the stimulated emission peaks are doubly enhanced by their respective mode quality factor Q: one factor from the Purcell effect and the other factor from the photon number derived from the rate equation. After combining all these effects the theory can provide a quantitative description of fine features of both TE and TM modes (including higher-order modes) observed in the PL spectra of ZnO MSs. Surprisingly, it is found that for ZnO MS with diameter larger than 5 µm, the PL emission spectrum is dominated by higher-order modes. The quantitative understanding of the interplay of these emission mechanisms should prove useful for optimizing the performance of light-emitting devices based on micro resonators. This paper presents the design and analysis of welding fixtures based on transient thermal analysis. Welding fixtures is designed to hold and support the workpiece securely during the welding process. The heat transformation from the workpiece could lead the temperature rises and impacts to the welding fixtures. Therefore, the study introduces the development of welding fixtures as one of a safety measure prevents the welder from injury while handling welding process. The conceptual design of welding fixtures and material were applied to conduct the simulation. Transient thermal analysis was performed on temperature and total heat flux by using computer aided engineering software. The result shows the analysis of equivalent stress, total deformation, factors of safety, fatigue life and fatigue damage. Furthermore, the equivalent stress failure theory used to predict yielding in welding fixture design. The design of welding fixtures and material selection were proposed to hold and support the workpiece securely. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Closed-loop sparse channel estimation for wideband millimeter-wave full-dimensional MIMO systems

This paper proposes a closed-loop sparse channel estimation (CE) scheme for wideband millimeter-wave hybrid full-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output and time division duplexing based systems, which exploits the channel sparsity in both angle and delay domains. At the downlink CE stage, random transmit precoding matrix is designed at base station (BS) for channel sounding, and receive combining matrices at user devices (UDs) are designed whereby the hybrid array is visualized as a low-dimensional digital array for facilitating the multi-dimensional unitary ESPRIT (MDU-ESPRIT) algorithm to estimate respective angle-of-arrivals (AoAs). At the uplink CE stage, the estimated downlink AoAs, namely, uplink angle-of-departures (AoDs), are exploited to design multi-beam transmit precoding matrices at UDs to enable BS to estimate the uplink AoAs, i.e., the downlink AoDs, and delays of different UDs, whereby the MDU-ESPRIT algorithm is used based on the designed receive combining matrix at BS. Furthermore, a maximum likelihood approach is proposed to pair the channel parameters acquired at the two stages, and the path gains are then obtained using least squares estimator. According to spectrum estimation theory, our solution can acquire the super-resolution estimations of the AoAs/AoDs and delays of sparse multipath components with low training overhead. Simulation results verify the better CE performance and lower computational complexity of our solution over state-of-the-art approaches. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Gejlek or Galah is a conventional wood-made seed planting tools aid common used by corn farmers. The limited functions and heavy weight of the existing seed planting caused low productivity and long duration in planting activity. The aim of the research is to design and to develop seed planting tools which able to accommodate user needs. User-Centered Design (UCD) methods used to design product focused on customer satisfaction. 15 respondents involved in this research to measure productivity, practicality, reliability and ergonomic. Validity test represent by F-value produce result test in between 0.354 to 0.625 where Ftest > Ftab means reject H0 or seed planting tools design able to fulfil user needs and different from previous design. User test show how work load against pulse measurement improve 26.44% and Nordic Body Map decrease by average 25% which mean there are significant improvement in terms of work load and ergonomics. It helps increase work productivity.

The greenhouse gas “endangerment finding” of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), established in 2009 after a 2006 U.S. Supreme Court case (Massachusetts vs. EPA) in which we participated as amicus curiae (friends of the court), has become the basis for U.S. regulation of greenhouse gases in the years since. The current Administration of President Donald Trump is now seeking its repeal. Here, we review the role climate science played in that 2006 case, and how the scientific evidence that undergirds the endangerment finding has gotten stronger in the 16 years since. Finally, we consider what will be the fate of the endangerment finding—and indeed that of role of science in contributing to policy—in light of the current challenging environment for science in the U.S. The US EPA's greenhouse gas endangerment finding is itself now endangered by the current Presidential Administration Scientists had a key role in bringing about the endangerment finding The science supporting the finding has only gotten stronger in the 16 years since the endangerment finding

Synthesis of mercaptoethyl ester of palm fatty acid distillate: Effects of dehydration methods

This research was aimed to evaluate the synthesis of mercaptoethyl ester of palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) where water as a byproduct was removed by using vacuum distillation and azeotropic distillation. The reactions were done in a batch reactor using para-toluene sulfonic acid (pTSA) as a catalyst. The performances of the synthesis were evaluated by measuring the sulfhydryl content and yield of the product. Compared to dehydration by vacuum distillation, dehydration by azeotropic distillation gave lower sulfhydryl content and yield but faster reaction completion. Azeotropic distillation gave sulfhydryl content and yield in the range of 6–7% and 57–74%, respectively. Vacuum distillation gave sulfhydryl content and yield in the range of 7–9% and 75–85%, respectively.
