Sysevr: A framework for using deep learning to detect software vulnerabilities

The detection of software vulnerabilities (or vulnerabilities for short) is an important problem that has yet to be tackled, as manifested by many vulnerabilities reported on a daily basis. This calls for machine learning methods to automate vulnerability detection. Deep learning is attractive for this purpose because it does not require human experts to manually define features. Despite the tremendous success of deep learning in other domains, its applicability to vulnerability detection is not systematically understood. In order to fill this void, we propose the first systematic framework for using deep learning to detect vulnerabilities. The framework, dubbed Syntax-based, Semantics-based, and Vector Representations (SySeVR), focuses on obtaining program representations that can accommodate syntax and semantic information pertinent to vulnerabilities. Our experiments with 4 software products demonstrate the usefulness of the framework: we detect 15 vulnerabilities that are not reported in the National Vulnerability Database. Among these 15 vulnerabilities, 7 are unknown and have been reported to the vendors, and the other 8 have been "silently" patched by the vendors when releasing newer versions of the products. A flame combustion method enables the synthesis of diamond using acetylene-oxygen gas flame combustion in ambient air. Recently, tungsten carbide (WC) has been used as cutting tools in the machining industry. To obtain diamond films and to achieve good adhesion on the WC substrate, diamond films were synthesized by flame combustion method. However, synthesized diamond films delaminate as a result of thermal stress during cooling. In this study, as a pretreatment of the substrate to prevent the delamination, a chemical processing was performed. The WC substrate was pretreated by chemical etching to roughen the surface. The substrate was etched in an ultrasonic bath using Murakami's reagent. Another processing was performed using an acid solution of hydrogen peroxide, in order to remove cobalt from the substrate surface. The pretreatment periods were varied. Moreover, the effect of the pretreatment of the substrate on synthesized diamond films by flame combustion was investigated. © 2017 The Author(s)

"Little Red Dots" (LRDs) are an abundant high-redshift population newly discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). They are characterized by a red color in the rest-frame optical band, compact morphology, and broad Balmer emission lines (FWHM >∼ 1000 km s−1) that suggest an AGN nature. Using a method of pixel-by-pixel color selection and relaxing the compactness criteria, we identify three of the first dual LRD candidates in the COSMOS-Web survey with projected separations of 0.′′2-0.′′4 (1-2 pkpc at their photometric redshifts). A comparison between existing LRD samples and mock data reveals that the projected separations of these dual LRD candidates are unlikely to result from chance projections of objects at different redshifts. In one case (CW-B5-15958), the dual LRD includes two bright sources (mF444W = 24.3 and 24.8) with characteristic V-shape spectral energy distribution (SEDs) and photometric redshifts consistent with each other. We find that CW-B5-15958 has a faint off-centered component and a companion galaxy. In the other two dual systems, the brighter LRD exhibits a V-shape SED, while the fainter LRD (mF444W>∼ 26) is undetected in both F115W and F150W. These discoveries suggest that the angular auto-correlation function (ACF) of LRDs exhibits a significant excess (∼ 3 × 102 times) on sub-arcsec (kilo-parsec) separations compared to the extrapolation of a power-law ACF of JWST-found AGNs measured over 10′′-100′′. Follow-up spectroscopic confirmation of their redshifts and the construction of a larger sample are essential to advance our understanding of the evolution of supermassive black holes and the importance of mergers in the early universe. © 2024, CC BY.

We demonstrate a 0.95 GHz repetition rate fully stabilized Yb:fiber frequency comb without optical amplification. Benefitted from the high mode power and high coherence, this comb achieved 35 dB to 42 dB signal to noise ratio on the direct heterodyne beat signals with at least 6 continuous wave lasers (at 580nm, 679nm, 698nm, 707nm, 813nm and 922 nm) while keeping >40 dB carrier envelop frequency signal. It can be used for the direct measurement of optical frequencies in visible and near-infrared wavelengths, and has a great potential on simultaneous comparison of multiple optical frequencies. Recently, single image haze removal has been investigated extensively. However, its performance is evaluated mainly based on subjective visual quality of recovered images. Several objective assessments have been attempted to evaluate haze removal schemes objectively, such as no-reference image quality model and edge-based assessments. Unfortunately, these objective assessments are not able to measure visual quality of recovered images appropriately, since the visual quality of recovered images is not concerned. Note that an objective assessment for haze removal should consider dehazing effect and distortions introduced during the haze removal process. In this paper, an objective assessment for haze removal based on two-objective optimization is presented where both dehazing effect and distortions of color and artifacts in recovered images are considered. The two indicators are combined with a weighted Euclidean distance. Two examples with two dehazing schemes are provided to justify the proposed objective assessment for haze removal. The simulation indicates that the objective results are consistent with their subjective visual quality of recovered images. It suggests that the proposed objective assessment may be applied to evaluate different haze removal schemes objectively. © 2017 IEEE.

Perm-selective ion transportation in a nanoscale structure has been extensively studied with aids of nanofabrication technology for a decade. While theoretical and experimental advances pushed the phenomenon to seminal innovative applications, its basic observation has relied only on an indirect analysis such as current-voltage relation or fluorescent imaging adjacent to the nanostructures. Here we experimentally, for the first time, demonstrated a direct visualization of perm-selective ion transportation through the nanostructures using an ionic plasma generation. A micro/nanofluidic device was employed for a micro bubble formation, plasma negation and penetration of the plasma through the nanojunction. The direct observation provided a keen evidence of perm-selectivity, i.e. allowing cationic species and rejecting anionic species. Furthermore, we can capture the plasma of Li+, which has lower mobility than Na+ in aqueous state, passed the nanojunction faster than Na+ due to the absence of hydrated shells around Li+. This simple, but essential visualization technique would be effective means not only for advancing the fundamental nanoscale electrokinetic study but also for providing the insight of new innovative engineering applications. The process of modelling the energy expenditure for IoT systems is distinct when compared to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), due to a number of factors and metrics. Few of such factors to mention are the IoT layers being different from the Open system Interconnection (OSI) with communication protocols like IPv6 Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN), Routing for Low Power and Lossy networks (RPL) and Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). This leads to the demand for designing efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols to serve the purpose of balance between the performance of the system and minimum energy consumption. The challenge of compatibility of MAC protocols for IoT deployment needs to be addressed. The proposed work is aimed at developing energy efficient framework for optimal balance between energy consumed by connected devices (sensor networks) in a complex and time-critical IoT system through performance monitoring of underlying communication technologies. It also focuses to address the trade-off between energy expenditure and performance of the network for the communicating nodes. An Energy Harvesting MAC protocol is designed and developed after modelling of the nodes using Reinforcement Learning (RL) for time critical IoT systems. The results have shown that the energy expenditure of the IoT devices is considerably minimized and the performance is increased by nearly 80% when compared to the state-of-art energy harvesting solutions for sustainable IoT systems. This research also plays a significant role in matching the energy predictions and the experimentations that validate the IoT systems in a real-world scenario.

Static analysis is an effective way of checking memory safety issues in program. Usually, multiple analysis algorithms usually run together to achieve a precise analysis result. In this paper, a novel analysis frame work over access path is presented for incorporating analysis algorithms. A pointer analysis based on access path works as a base layer, alias and pointer information are automatically handled. An summary based checking algorithm is designed for checking real world project. Moreover, the framework is fully extensible and various analysis can be added as plugins. Experimental results show that our method has good precision on Juliet Test Suite and scales to large software.
