Cherry, grape, and blueberry growers lose around 80 million dollars annually to bird damage in the state of Washington alone. Growers of a wide range of crops have a critical need for a safe and cost-effective method for persistent bird deterrence, which would lead to significantly reduced production costs. The goal of this research is to build a completely autonomous Unmanned Aerial system (UAS) to deter birds from the blueberry fields and grape vineyards. In the effort to build the UAS, the most vital part of its implementation is the vision system. The primary objective of this paper is to build a system to detect and localize birds. T o detect birds, background subtraction algorithms have been used and the performance of various background subtraction algorithms are measured. It is found out that ViBe, a background subtraction algorithm, performs best in the bird detection scenario and provides an accuracy of 63%. In the quest of improving the bird detection speed and obtaining it in real time, a split window technique is used to improve the detection speed by 13%. To estimate the distance of the detected bird, a stereo vision system is proposed. With our current system, an accurate measure of the distance of the object is possible from 2 to 7 meters with an error accuracy of 30 centimeters. The long-term goal is to combine the efforts of the paper to successfully create a completely autonomous Smart Scarecrow that can safely, effectively and reliably scare and deter birds from high-value crops.

This paper proposes a Smart Orientation Guide that is designed to provide freshmen a mapping of directional guide for commonly used buildings within a university compound. The application is able to calculate the distance between two locations and displays the estimated arrival time for the user. The ability to detect the location is based on the GPS functionality provided on the smartphone while time is estimated based on the distance of route as well as the mode of transportation. Smart Orientation Guide is developed based on android platform using the prototyping methodology. Functionality and user acceptance tests were carried to evaluate the performance of the proposed application and the results showed a highly favorable response. The Smart Orientation Guide application is hoped to substitute the use of paper map on campus. It will certainly help users like new students, visitors or new staff to find places on the campus ground within a short period of time.

We experimentally demonstrate a Faraday laser at Rb 1529 nm transition by using a performance-improved Rb electrodeless-discharge-lamp-based excited-state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter as the frequency- selective element. Neither the electrical locking scheme nor the additional frequency-stabilized pump laser are used. The frequency of the external-cavity diode laser is stabilized to the Rb 1529 nm transition, and the Allan deviation of the Faraday laser is measured by converting the optical intensity into frequency. The Faraday laser can be used as a frequency standard in the telecom C band for further research on metrology, microwave photonics, and optical communication systems.

Event extraction is an important research point in information extraction area, and news event extraction has a greater practical significance. The existing methods of extracting news event, which starts from the time element, is to identify the date sentences hold by Natural Language Processing and extract the event on the date by Text Clustering. However, they only process the news that holds a time-tag and gives up the news that has no accurate date, which easily leads an extraction deviation of significant events and reduces the accuracy of ordering the significant events. In this paper, improvement for this defect is to calculate the similarities between sentences to put part of the non-time-tag sentences into the right date container, thereby the accuracy of ordering the significant event is *** experiments and compared with the existing methods,the accuracy of ordering the significant events in this paper is improved by 14.6%.
