Development of behavior monitoring system for honeybees in hive - automatic detection of honeybee’s communication behaviors using RFID sensors and image processing

Nearly a hundred years ago, Karl von Frisch discovered that honeybees (Apis mellifera) communicate the exact location of food sources to other bees through a complex movement called waggle dance. Since then, analyzing communications performed by honeybee workers in their hive is one of the most important and interesting issues to reveal a mechanism of honeybee’s language. However, it is not clear yet that the behavioral developmental process of young adult honeybees after their emerging adulthood. Our research focus is to analyze how they learn to dance well. These analyses have been usually conducted by extracting honeybee ‘s walking trajectories from recorded long-time video data manually. For a systematic and theoretical analysis of honeybee’s communication, we have developed an automatic tracking algorithm of multiple honeybees using image processing and constructed an automatic recording system for long-term tracking of honeybee behaviors with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensors and high-resolution camera modules using multiple small-size single board computers, RaspberryPi. The tiny RFID-tags are mounted on the dorsal tergum of young adult honeybees just after their emergence and two RFID antennas are arranged about 20 centimeters apart to determine the time whether each honeybee was entering or leaving the hive. Using this system, we conducted a recording experiment from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm over 4 weeks in September 2015. The size of our target colony is about 400 honeybees including a queen. The number of tagged honeybees is 100 individuals and the printed numbers are attached for each to be identified by observers. In this paper, first we show the background of our research and clarify requirements for a monitoring system of honeybee behaviors. Next, we show an overview of our system and explain the simultaneous tracking algorithm we proposed. Finally, we show the experimental results and discuss the system capabilities and some open problems. © 20

In an adaptive security-critical system, security mechanisms change according to the type of threat posed by the environment. Specifying the behavior of these systems is difficult because conditions of the environment are difficult to describe until the system has been deployed and used for a length of time. This paper defines the problem of adaptation in security-critical systems, and outlines the RELAIS approach for expressing requirements and specifying the behavior in a way that helps identify the need for adaptation, and the appropriate adaptation behavior at runtime. The paper introduces the notion of adaptation via input approximation and proposes statistical machine learning techniques for realizing it. The approach is illustrated with a running example and is applied to a realistic security example from a cloud-based file-sharing application. Bayesian classification and logistic regression methods are used to implement adaptive specifications and these methods offer different levels of adaptive security and usability in the file-sharing application.

Increasingly more mobile Internet traffic is produced which contains ample personal information related to user mobility and website browsing behavior. Prior research has attempted to recommend friends based on Global Position system (GPS) in location based social networks (LBSN). However, the study of friend recommendation in general social network according to position from the base station is relatively understudied. This paper introduces a novel feature set extracted from mobile Internet traffic according to base station location and Uniform Resource Locator (URL). We train classification models using these features to predict friendship between pairs of Weibo users. Results show that both base station location and URL when acted alone can already effectively reflect friendships even in general social network. We further show that by fusing the two features together, the model obtains even better performance. Finally, we demonstrate that the location and URL features can improve prediction performance than only using the common friends.

Cloud storage is one of the key services in cloud computing. In order to appeal more users to the cloud storage, free cloud experience is provided to potential users. A registration server is set specially for intentional users who are satisfied with the free experience and want to register as very important persons (VIPs). In order to mathematically evaluate the system performance and optimally plan the registration server, we establish a queueing network-based system model. We analyse the steady-state distribution of the system model and derive the performance measures of the system in terms of the average response time of potential users and the utilisation of registration server. For balancing different performance measures, we establish a cost function and develop an optimisation algorithm to plan the capacity of the registration server with a reasonable service rate. © Copyright 2017 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Transmission lines with high voltage generate a distributive capacitive current which have negative impact on differential current protection during faulty conditions. In order to remove the harmful and negative effects of distributed capacitive current on differential current protection, a novel scheme based on Bergeron's model is proposed in this article. Differential criterion is built with the same amount of currents that is computed from both ends to the set point. Implementation of the differential current protection under low sampling frequency proved that the criterion is correct for practical execution. The calculation of distributed current at the set point has been achieved using a unique procedure of cubic spline data interpolation point at each sampling interval under low sampling frequency. PSCAD simulation results in frequency domain show that this novel scheme for differential current protection is not affected by harmful effects of distributed capacitive current as compared to traditional differential current protection. Moreover, novel scheme has certain advantages such as high sensitivity, fast action speed and high reliability. © 2017 IEEE.

The serious game which is utilized for educational training has been operated using I/O (Input/Output) devices like keyboard, mouse and monitor. Recently, serious game is advancing towards VR (Virtual Reality) based training system by providing interaction functions between virtual visualization environment and real action of trainee by wearable devices, such as motion recognition system and HMD (Head Mounted Display). For acceptance test of VR based training system, hardware testing is possible by using test metrics which can be described on its specification. But VR based training contents as a software including virtual visualization environment has many difficulties for testing due to lack of quantitative test metrics about realism which means similarity between real environment and its virtualized environment. In this study, it is suggested quantitative design and documentation methodology of VR based training contents using test models derived from ISO/IEC 25010:2001 SQuaRE (system and software Quality Requirements and Evaluation). The suggested quantitative design document has been experimented through the development of a VR based plant safety training system and has verified its usefulness as training contents test metrics for testing realism which is an emotional factor. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

Depth Image-Based Rendering (DIBR) is an approach to generate a 3-D image by the original 2-D color image with the corresponding 2-D depth map. Although DIBR is a quite convenient to convert 2D images to 3D ones, there is a disadvantage in DIBR system that it cannot reach real-time processing due to the computing time. Against this, this paper proposes a method which is based on discrete wavelet transform and adaptive edge-oriented smoothing process, to speed up the computing of the system. The proposed method still preserves the original texture and thus the proposed method not only preserves the vertical texture but also reduces at least 60% of the computing time of the DIBR system. © 2018 computer Society of the Republic of China. The spatial distribution of energetic protons contributes towards the understanding of magnetospheric dynamics. Based upon 17 years of the Cluster/RAPID observations, we have derived machine learning-based models to predict the proton intensities at energies from 28 to 1,885 keV in the 3D terrestrial magnetosphere at radial distances between 6 and 22 RE. We used the satellite location and indices for solar, solar wind and geomagnetic activity as predictors. The results demonstrate that the neural network (multi-layer perceptron regressor) outperforms baseline models based on the k-Nearest Neighbors and historical binning on average by ∼80% and ∼33%, respectively. The average correlation between the observed and predicted data is about 56%, which is reasonable in light of the complex dynamics of fast-moving energetic protons in the magnetosphere. In addition to a quantitative analysis of the prediction results, we also investigate parameter importance in our model. The most decisive parameters for predicting proton intensities are related to the location: ZGSE direction and the radial distance. Among the activity indices, the solar wind dynamic pressure is the most important. The results have a direct practical application, for instance, for assessing the contamination particle background in the X-Ray telescopes for X-ray astronomy orbiting above the radiation belts. In this paper, a coarse-to-fine framework for image noise removal is proposed. The bilateral filter is redefined by the manner of progressive refining to effectively eliminate noise, thus forming progressive refinement bilateral filter (PRBF), which estimates the pixel values of a noisy image through the method of progressive refinement with gradual recursion and its result retains more details, infinite close to the original image. PRBF is further integrated into the denoising model for the details processing again after denoising of the major part of the image. Our algorithm is evaluated and compared on two large standardized datasets and a number of selected images. The experimental results show that our algorithm consistently outperforms other approaches for image denoising and demonstrates the effectiveness of our framework for stereo matching.

We demonstrate photonic RF phase encoding based on an integrated micro-comb source. By assembling single-cycle Gaussian pulse replicas using a transversal filtering structure, phase encoded waveforms can be generated by programming the weights of the wavelength channels. This approach eliminates the need for RF signal generators for RF carrier generation or arbitrary waveform generators for phase encoded signal generation. A large number of wavelengths—up to 60—were provided by the microcomb source, yielding a high pulse compression ratio of 30. Reconfigurable phase encoding rates ranging from 2 to 6 Gb/s were achieved by adjusting the length of each phase code. This work demonstrates the significant potentials of this microcomb-based approach to achieve high-speed RF photonic phase encoding with low cost and footprint. © 2019, CC BY.
