Imitation learning that mimics experts' skills from their demonstrations has shown great success in discovering dynamic treatment regimes, i.e., the optimal decision rules to treat an individual patient based on related evolving treatment and covariate history. Existing imitation learning methods, however, still lack the capability to interpret the underlying rationales of the learned policy in a faithful way. Moreover, since dynamic treatment regimes for patients often exhibit varying patterns, i.e., symptoms that transit from one to another, the flat policy learned by a vanilla imitation learning method is typically undesired. To this end, we propose an Interpretable Skill Learning (ISL) framework to resolve the aforementioned challenges for dynamic treatment regimes through imitation. The key idea is to model each segment of experts' demonstrations with a prototype layer and integrate it with the imitation learning layer to enhance the interpretation capability. On one hand, the ISL framework is able to provide interpretable explanations by matching the prototype to exemplar segments during the inference stage, which enables doctors to perform reasoning of the learned demonstrations based on human-understandable patient symptoms and lab results. On the other hand, the obtained skill embedding consisting of prototypes serves as conditional information to the imitation learning layer, which implicitly guides the policy network to provide a more accurate demonstration when the patients' state switches from one stage to another. Thoroughly empirical studies demonstrate that our proposed ISL technique can achieve better performance than state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the proposed ISL framework also exhibits good interpretability which cannot be observed in existing methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Fast-growing IoT devices in healthcare have ushered in a new era of data-driven patient care and treatment. These gadgets capture too much sensitive medical data, a major issue. We need to boost data analysis, security, and privacy. This research uses cutting-edge concepts like federated learning and blockchain technology to improve Healthcare IoT analytics and security. This study examines blockchain and federated learning's numerous integration aspects. It begins with data security, employing blockchain's immutability and decentralization to prevent manipulation. Federation learning was utilized to solve privacy concerns while adhering to tight healthcare data security regulations, providing strong data analysis without releasing raw, patient-specific information. This study examines how federated learning and blockchain technologies enhance healthcare IoT systems' analytics. This connection allows safe, collaborative analysis among healthcare professionals and devices, offering more insights for research, diagnostics, and tailored patient care. How to integrate these cutting-edge technologies into healthcare IoT networks is also explored. © 2024 IEEE.

Chatbots4Mobile is a research project from the GESSI research group (UPC-BarcelonaTech) which aims at designing and developing a task oriented, knowledge based conversational agent to support mobile users in the process of managing and integrating the functionalities exposed by their own application portfolio. To support the design of the required knowledge base, the project focuses on the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to infer extended knowledge about the features exposed by a subset of mobile applications, including feature extraction from app-related documents, syntactic and semantic similarity analysis between features, and intent/entity classification focused on functionality identification from user requests. As next steps, we are focusing on the evaluation of embedded linguistic knowledge in large language models, as well as the application of granular sentiment analysis techniques to discern biased documents and process sentiment-based user feedback. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors. This paper addresses a real-world Integrated Operating Room Planning and Scheduling (IORPS) problem encountered by a local hospital in Naples, characterized by stringent emergency management constraints, requiring treatment initiation within a 20-minute time-window. We tackle this problem by an original Integer Linear Programming formulation, capable of dealing with different operating room management strategies (open, block and block-modified). Our work differs from conventional cost-focused models by adopting a patient-oriented objective function, aligning with public hospitals obligations. The proposed method has been validated using real-world data provided by the hospital. The performed experimentation demonstrates the efficiency of the approach, capable of determining the optimal solution within an acceptable computation time that aligns with hospital requirements. Moreover, it also highlights the relevance of using our optimization approach to reduce delays in emergency responsiveness. This confirms its practical usage as a substitute for the current manual procedure. © The Author(s) 2024.

Fog computing is a promising technology for critical, resource-intensive, and time-sensitive applications. In this regard, a significant challenge is generating an offloading solution that minimizes the latency, energy, and number of outages for a dense IoT-Fog environment. However, the existing solutions either focus on a single objective or mainly dedicate fixed-sized resources as virtual resource units (VRUs). Moreover, these solutions are restrictive and not comprehensive, resulting in poor performance. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a VMAP model addressing the lacunas above. Offloading problem is abstracted as a one-to-many matching game between two sets of entities - tasks and fog nodes (FNs) by considering both preferences. Moreover, the preferences and weights of the parameters are generated using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Exhaustive simulations indicate that the proposed strategy outperforms the baseline algorithms, considering average task latency and energy consumption by 35% and 22.2%, respectively. Additionally, resource utilization also experiences a boost by 28.57%, and 97.98% of tasks complete their execution within the deadlines. © 2023 IEEE.

Myocardial strain imaging provides a valuable tool for detecting subclinical left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and adding prognostic value in assessing various types of heart disease. Recent studies have utilized highly accurate strain-dedicated techniques, such as displacement encoding with stimulated echoes (DENSE), to train a deep learning (DL) framework to predict the myocardial displacements/deformations from routine cine balanced steady state free precession (bSSFP) images. However, these methods have shown limited performance in capturing the large rotational motion of the myocardium associated with twist and torsion over time, which are important aspects of myocardial mechanics. To address this gap, this paper introduces a novel DENSE-guided DL network that explicitly accounts for large rotational motion to further improve strain analysis of standard cine bSSFP images. Specifically, our proposed network includes two key components: (i) a time-series rotation estimation network employing a 3D convolutional encoder-decoder architecture to model the large rotational dynamics of the LV myocardium over time, and (ii) a radial motion prediction network based on deformable image registration. The output of these two sub-networks was integrated and refined through a fusion network to predict the final myocardial displacements, supervised by DENSE ground truth. Experimental results show that our method improves the accuracy of myocardial strain with effectively captured large rotations. © 2025 IEEE.

Mobile app stores provide centralized access to a large data set of mobile app related natural language textual data, including developer’s documentation (e.g., descriptions, changelogs) and user-generated data (e.g., user reviews). Motivated by this context, multiple studies have focused on data-driven elicitation processes for the automatic extraction of the set of features exposed by a catalogue of applications and the inferred, extended knowledge that can be derived from this information. Moreover, with the emerging and generalization of large language models, traditional linguistic-based approaches can be significantly improved by the potential of the knowledge embedded in this kind of models. In this paper, we present TransFeatEx, a NLP-based feature extraction pipeline that combines the use of a RoBERTa-based model with the application of consolidated syntactic and semantic techniques. The pipeline is designed as a customizable, standalone service to be used either as a playground, experimentation tool or as a software component to be embedded into a third-party software system for batch-processing large document corpora. Effective and efficient cyber incident handling is crucial for maintaining the security of information systems and organizational data. This research aims to develop a priority-based cyber incident handling method by adopting the NIST 2.0 framework and utilizing machine learning classification algorithms. This method enables organizations to quickly and accurately identify and respond to incidents based on threat levels and impact, focusing resources on the most critical incidents. The research employs the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification algorithm to determine incident priorities. The study is still developing for handling cyber incidents, followed by testing and evaluating the system prototype within organizations. Initial results indicate that the priority-based approach using the SVM classification algorithm achieves a True Positive (TP) Rate of 0.999 and a False Positive (FP) Rate of 0.008, with a correlation of 98.88%, resulting in excellent performance in identifying positive cases and a low error rate. © 2024 IEEE.

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have demonstrated remarkable performance in classification and regression tasks on RGB-based pathological inputs. The network's prediction mechanism must be interpretable to establish trust in the clinical routine. One principal approach to interpretation is feature attribution. Feature attribution methods identify the importance of input features for the output prediction. Building on the Information Bottleneck Attribution (IBA) method, we recognize the RGB's input regions with high mutual information with the network's output for each prediction. IBA identifies input regions that have sufficient predictive information. In this paper, we introduce "IBATree", a novel approach that combines IBA with decision trees to enhance both the interpretability and accuracy of DNNs in cancer cell classification. Our method leverages the information bottleneck framework to inject noise into feature maps and then isolates the most informative features for model predictions while maintaining high classification performance. We evaluated our proposed approach on three datasets - CNMC, ISBI2016, and BreaKHis - demonstrating competitive accuracy and producing clear interpretations. This makes IBATree particularly suitable for clinical applications, where understanding the rationale behind predictions is crucial. Our results show that IBATree provides reliable predictions and valuable insights into feature importance, paving the way for its application in various biomedical domains. © 2024 IEEE.

This research focuses on enhancing the spectral efficiency of 5G networks through the utilization of nonlinear stochastic precoding techniques. The proposed approach aims to mitigate the detrimental effects of channel impairments and noise by employing advanced precoding schemes that exploit the statistical properties of the wireless channel. By incorporating nonlinear precoding algorithms and stochastic optimization methods, the system can dynamically adapt to varying channel conditions, resulting in improved data transmission rates and overall spectral efficiency. Through extensive simulations and analysis, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated, showcasing its potential to significantly enhance the performance of 5G networks in real-world scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.
