Unlike traditional hierarchical controllers for robotic leg prostheses and exoskeletons, continuous systems could allow persons with mobility impairments to walk more naturally in real-world environments without requiring high-level switching between locomotion modes. To support these next-generation controllers, we developed a new system called KIFNet (Kinematics and Image Fusing Network) that uses lightweight and efficient deep learning models to continuously predict the leg kinematics during walking. We tested different sensor fusion methods to combine kinematics data from inertial sensors and computer vision data from smart glasses and found that adaptive instance normalization achieved the lowest RMSE predictions for knee and ankle joint kinematics. We also deployed our model on an embedded device. Without inference optimization, our model was 20 times faster than the previous state-of-the-art and achieved 20% higher prediction accuracies, and during some locomotor activities like stair descent, decreased RMSE up to 300%. With inference optimization, our best model achieved 125 FPS on an NVIDIA Jetson Nano. These results demonstrate the potential to build fast and accurate deep learning models for continuous prediction of leg kinematics during walking based on sensor fusion and embedded computing, therein providing a foundation for real-time continuous controllers for robotic leg prostheses and exoskeletons.

The Mekong River Basin (MRB) is one of the highest biodiversity areas in the world and is the vital source of livelihoods for more than 60 millions of people over six countries in Southeast Asia. However, it is suffering from a severe sediment starvation problem caused by climate change and human activities, particularly dam constructions. Understanding long-term sediment changes thus plays a crucial role for management and contingency plans. Current sediment concentration data in the MRB are extremely sporadic, making it a non-trivial task to analyze them. This paper focuses on the sediment reconstruction to provide long-term reliable suspended sediment concentration (SSC) data using Machine Learning (ML) perspectives. In particular, a novel semi-supervised ML model, which can effectively deal with data sparsity, is introduced to predict/reconstruct missing sediment data. The key idea of this approach is to exploit abundant available hydroclimate data to reduce training overfitting rather than solely relying on sediment concentration data, thus enhancing the accuracy of the employed ML models. Extensive experiments on data obtained from 1979 to 2019 at the three main stations (i.e., Chiang Saen, Nong Khai, and Mukdahan) are conducted to demonstrate the performances of the proposed method compared to other state-of-the-art supervised techniques and traditional simulation methods commonly used in previous sediment forecasting/reconstruction studies. To the best of our knowledge, this approach is the first semi-supervised method to reconstruct sediment data in the field. Though this study focuses on the MRB, sediment sparsity is a very common problem in other river systems worldwide. Thus, this method can be widely applied for them for more effective sediment reconstruction/prediction in general. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The increasing use of IoT devices on future networks is very helpful for humans in their lives. However, the increase in devices connected to IoT networks also increases the potential for attacks against those networks. Vulnerabilities in Internet of Things (IoT) networks can be exposed at any time. Artificial intelligence can be used to protect the IoT network by being able to detect attacks on the network so that they can be prevented. In this study, network detection was carried out using the Deep Neural Network (DNN) algorithm. The test was carried out using the UNSW Bot-IoT dataset with a comparison of training data of 75% of the overall data. The results obtained show the ability of the algorithm to detect attacks on average with 99.999% accuracy. The validation loss and training loss look very small. In this study, there is a validation loss that still occurs in overfitting, but the difference is very small.

We study the variability of vertically stacked gate-all-around silicon nanosheet (GAA Si NS) complementary field-effect transistors (CFETs). The process variation effect (PVE), the work function fluctuation (WKF), and the random dopant fluctuation (RDF) of CFETs are statistically estimated using an experimentally validated device simulation technique. Among five factors of PVE, the channel thickness (T Nch /T Pch ), the channel width (W ch ), and the gate length (L G ) are significant. Owing to superior GAA channel control and increased effective gate area, both WKF and RDF are suppressed. Notably, the PVE on both N-/P-FETs of GAA Si CFET induce the largest off-state current fluctuations of 80% and 278%, respectively, because the device characteristic is very sensitive to the layer thickness and width of channel.

Survival Analysis of Kasturi Tobacco Plants in Jember District using the Stratified Cox and Extended Cox Models

In 2022, tobacco was the top export commodity, generating $106.3 million in sales. East Java Province contributes significantly to Indonesia's tobacco production, with an annual output of 188.6 thousand tons. Jember Regency is the area in East Java Province which is a Kasturi tobacco cultivation area. The productivity of Kasturi tobacco continues to decrease due to several factors that can affect the survival of the tobacco. This study aims to analyze the survival of Kasturi tobacco by creating stratified Cox and extended Cox models in order to handle factors that cannot fulfill the proportional hazard assumption. Based on the results of the analysis, the stratified Cox model is the best model with AIC and BIC values of 798.108 and 805.5748 respectively, while the extended Cox has AIC and BIC values of 840.2186 and 850.1732 respectively. Variables that can significantly affect the survival of Kasturi tobacco are the variable concentration of ZA fertilizer, pesticide concentration. The addition of ZA fertilizer must be appropriate, because if excessive it can cause poisoning of tobacco plants. Likewise with pesticides, if excessive it will cause damage to the leaves. This policy can increase the productivity of Kasturi tobacco. Then, Jember Regency contributes greater export capacity. • This paper aims to determine the factors that affect the survival of Kasturi tobacco plants in Jember • By using the extended Cox model, the best one is obtained using the Heaviside function with AIC and BIC values of 840.2186 and 850.1732, respectively • The stratified Cox model is better than the extended Cox model, which has AIC and BIC values of 798.108 and 805.5748, respectively

Alternatives for testing of context-aware contemporary software systems in industrial settings: Results from a rapid review

Context: Context-aware contemporary software systems (CACSS) are mainstream. Furthermore, they present challenges for current engineering practices. These challenges are distinctively present when testing CACSS, as the variation of context deepens the limitations of available software testing practices and technologies. Objective: To understand how the industry deals with the variation of context when testing CACSS. Method: A Rapid Review was commissioned to uncover the necessary evidence to achieve the objectives. Results: Our results show that current research initiatives aim to generate or improve Test Suites that can deal with the variation of context and the sheer volume of test input possibilities. To achieve this, they mostly rely on modeling the systems' dynamic behavior and increasing computing resources to generate test inputs. We found no evidence of research results aiming at managing context variation through the testing lifecycle process. Conclusions: We discuss how the identified solutions are not ready for mainstream adoption. They are all domain-specific, and while the ideas and approaches can be reproduced in different settings, the technologies noon to be re-engineered and tailor to the specific CACSS. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by alternating periods of activity and remission. This study investigates whether the cellular environments of quiescent (inactive disease) and normal tissues show similarities or differences, exploring potential residual effects from disease and tissue recovery patterns. While active CD can typically be characterized by high neutrophil density, whereas quiescent tissues present less pronounced inflammatory markers. This study leverages multiplexed immunofluorescence (MxIF) data to examine the distributions and patterns of various nuclei subtypes in quiescent versus normal tissues, aiming to determine how similar or different these tissues are in the absence of active inflammation. In our study, we analyze four tissue samples labeled as normal and five as quiescent from CD patients, as determined by a pathologist. We use rigid and deformable registration of MxIF images to analyze these tissues in a unified space and classify the nuclei into 13 subtypes. Using a KD tree, we identify the 10 nearest neighbors for each nucleus, building a combined distance-weighted neighborhood matrix representing both normal and quiescent tissues. We projected these neighborhoods into 2 dimensions using t-distributed stochastic nearest neighbor(t-SNE), clustered them, and calculated the enrichment for each subtype between normal and quiescent states within each of 20 and 40 clusters. In the 20-cluster analysis, we find monocytes enrich in one cluster and leukocytes enrich in two clusters for normal and quiescent tissues respectively. For the 40-cluster analysis, we observe monocytes, macrophages, and leukocytes enrich in one cluster each in normal tissues, and in the quiescent condition, one cluster enriched with enteroendocrine cells, and two clusters enriched with leukocytes. Learning activities are an indicator of the learner's desire to learn during the learning process. The pattern of learner action is related to learning activities. In this case, in extracting the learning process, it is necessary to collect a lot of data through analysis of the learning process. The purpose of this study is to recommend and report the performance of an activity tracking system equipped with visual artifacts as an educational data mining approach to analyze action patterns when learners complete the arrangement of program code lines in each programming problem. In this study, data were taken from activity recordings when learners used interactive learning media for a basic programming subject called TOLSYASUPI-EduMed which had problem-solving learning models embedded in their interactions. Learning Analytics is used as a method of this research and data relationships from learner actions during the learning process using the “if-then” rule. Log data is used for recording and detecting activities carried out by learners. We confirm that the results of the study are based on the findings of the data relationship that if the lines of program code are too long (more than five lines) then almost all learners experience a bottleneck condition. The completion time of each question and the number of iterations in completing the program code lines for each question have also been recorded and have a pattern of connection between the data. The information that has been obtained is then forwarded to teachers or stakeholders as key information to make appropriate feedback to learners based on the results as a means of analyzing and evaluating the programming learning process.

It has been a quarter of a century since the publication of the first edition of the IEEE International Conference on computer Supported Cooperative Work in Design (CSCWD) held in 1996 in Beijing, China. Despite some attempts to empirically examine the evolution and identity of the field of CSCW and its related communities and disciplines, the scarcity of scientometric studies on the IEEE CSCWD research productivity is noteworthy. To fill this gap, this study reports on an exploratory quantitative analysis of the literature published in the IEEE CSCWD conference proceedings with the purpose of visualizing and understanding its structure and evolution for the 2001-2019 period. The findings offer valuable insights into the paper and author distribution, country and citation-level productivity indicators, degree of collaboration, and collaboration index. Through this analysis we also expect to get an initial overview of the IEEE CSCWD conference concerning the main topics being presented, most cited papers, and variances in the number of keywords, full-text views, and references.

FetalNet: Low-light fetal echocardiography enhancement and dense convolutional network classifier for improving heart defect prediction

Background: Fetal heart defect (FHD) examination by ultrasound (US) is challenging because it involves low light, contrast, and brightness. Inadequate US images of fetal echocardiography play an important role in the failure to detect FHDs manually. The automatic interpretation of fetal echocardiography was proposed in a previous study. However, the low quality of US images reduces the prediction rate of computer-assisted diagnosis results. Methods: To increase the FHD prediction rate, we propose low-light fetal echocardiography enhancement stacking with a dense convolutional network classifier named “FetalNet.” Our proposed FetalNet model was developed using 460 US images to produce an image enhancement model. The results showed that all raw US images could be improved with satisfactory performance in terms of increasing the peak signal-to-noise ratio of 30.85 dB, a structural similarity index of 0.96, and a mean squared error of 18.16. Furthermore, all reconstructed images were used as inputs in a convolutional neural network to generate the best classifier for predicting FHD. Results: The proposed FetalNet model increased the FHD prediction rate by approximately 25% in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity and produced 100% predictive negative using unseen data. Conclusions: The proposed deep learning model has the potential to identify FHD accurately and shows potential for practical use in identifying congenital heart diseases in the future. © 2022 The Author(s)
