It is imperative to develop tools to characterize cells with the diseased and normal mitochondria to monitor the healthiness of cells and take preventive measures for potential mitochondrial disease development. Here, we adopt insulator dielectrophoresis (i-DEP), by utilizing the intrinsic dielectric response of a cell to an external AC electric field to differentiate cells, containing partially diseased and normal mitochondria. Taking advantage of dielectrophoresis, DEP, principle, we developed a quick diagnostic method to detect mitochondrial disease in living cells, which is not readily achievable by conventional cell cytometry. © 2019 CBMS-0001.

Dynamically encircling exceptional points (EPs) can lead to chiral mode switching as the system parameters are varied along a path that encircles EP. However, conventional encircling protocols result in low transmittance due to path-dependent losses. Here, we present a paradigm to encircle EPs that includes fast Hamiltonian variations on the parameter boundaries, termed Hamiltonian hopping, enabling ultrahigh-efficiency chiral mode switching. This protocol avoids path-dependent loss and allows us to experimentally demonstrate nearly 90% efficiency at 1550 nm in the clockwise direction, overcoming a long-standing challenge of non-Hermitian optical systems and powering up new opportunities for EP physics.

Interplay of Purcell Effect, Stimulated Emission, and Leaky Modes in the Photoluminescence Spectra of Microsphere Cavities

A theoretical model for describing the emission spectra of microsphere cavities is presented and its predictions of detailed line shapes of emission spectra associated with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of various orders in ZnO microspheres (MSs) are verified experimentally by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The interplay of the Purcell effect, quality factor, and leaky modes in spontaneous and stimulated emission spectra related to WGMs of all orders is revealed. The key success of the theory is based on the expansion of the full Green’s function of the MS in terms of all possible resonance modes in complex frequency space, which allows incorporation of contributions from leaky modes, stimulated emission processes, and the Purcell effect. We show that the spontaneous emission spectrum calculated according to Mie theory (without the Purcell effect) is dominated by the contribution of leaky modes, while the spontaneous and stimulated emission enhanced by the Purcell effect is responsible for the main WGM resonance peaks observed experimentally. It is found that the stimulated emission peaks are doubly enhanced by their respective mode quality factor Q: one factor from the Purcell effect and the other factor from the photon number derived from the rate equation. After combining all these effects, the theory can provide a quantitative description of fine features of both TE and TM modes (including higher-order modes) observed in the PL spectra of ZnO MSs. Surprisingly, it is found that for ZnO MS with a diameter larger than 5 μm, the PL emission spectrum is dominated by higher-order modes. The quantitative understanding of the interplay of these emission mechanisms should prove useful for optimizing the performance of light-emitting devices based on microresonators.

Meditation is a family of ancient and contemporary contemplative mind-body practices that can modulate psychological processes, awareness, and mental states. Over the last 40 years, clinical science has manualized meditation practices and designed various meditation interventions that have shown therapeutic efficacy for disorders including depression, pain, addiction, and anxiety. Over the past decade, neuroimaging has been used to examine the neuroscientific basis of meditation practices, effects, states, and outcomes for clinical and nonclinical populations. However, the generalizability and replicability of current neuroscientific models of meditation have not yet been established, because they are largely based on small datasets entrenched with heterogeneity along several domains of meditation (e.g., practice types, meditation experience, clinical disorder targeted), experimental design, and neuroimaging methods (e.g., preprocessing, analysis, task-based, resting-state, structural magnetic resonance imaging). These limitations have precluded a nuanced and rigorous neuroscientific phenotyping of meditation practices and their potential benefits. Here, we present ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis)–Meditation, the first worldwide collaborative consortium for neuroscientific investigations of meditation practices. ENIGMA-Meditation will enable systematic meta- and mega-analyses of globally distributed neuroimaging datasets of meditation using shared, standardized neuroimaging methods and tools to improve statistical power and generalizability. Through this powerful collaborative framework, existing neuroscientific accounts of meditation practices can be extended to generate novel and rigorous neuroscientific insights that account for multidomain heterogeneity. It is expected that managing process variations and organizing process domain knowledge in a reusable way can provide support to handle complexity in software process definition. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to describe a systematic software process reuse methodology, by combining process reuse techniques, such as Software Process Line and Component Based Process Definition, aiming to increase reuse possibilities. SPrL approach manages the variability aspect inherent to software process domain and CBPD focuses on modularizing the domain process information into process components. The proposed SPrL modelling metamodel and notation address reusable process elements, explicitly representing the variability concept in both process domain structure and behaviour. Based on the results of the evaluation studies, it was possible to get evidences of the approach feasibility, with a higher expressiveness when using the process variability notation proposed, which allow that more semantic concepts inherent to SPrL scenarios can be graphically described. Also, the set of heuristics to support mappings among artefacts in distinct abstraction levels was considered useful to keep the traceability of variability properties, relationships and restrictions. Background: Improving the accessibility of screening diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD) are two major challenges in the field of diabetes care. We aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning system to detect DKD and isolated diabetic nephropathy from retinal fundus images. Methods: In this population-based study, we developed a retinal image-based AI-deep learning system, DeepDKD, pretrained using 734 084 retinal fundus images. First, for DKD detection, we used 486 312 retinal images from 121 578 participants in the Shanghai Integrated Diabetes Prevention and Care system for development and internal validation, and ten multi-ethnic datasets from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK (65 406 participants) for external validation. Second, to differentiate isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, we used 1068 retinal images from 267 participants for development and internal validation, and three multi-ethnic datasets from China, Malaysia, and the UK (244 participants) for external validation. Finally, we conducted two proof-of-concept studies: a prospective real-world study with 3 months' follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of DeepDKD in screening DKD;and a longitudinal analysis of the effectiveness of DeepDKD in differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD on renal function changes with 4·6 years' follow-up. Findings: For detecting DKD, DeepDKD achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0·842 (95% CI 0·838–0·846) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·791–0·826 across external validation datasets. For differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, DeepDKD achieved an AUC of 0·906 (0·825–0·966) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·733–0·844 across external validation datasets. DeePMD-kit is a powerful open-source software package that facilitates molecular dynamics simulations using machine learning potentials (MLP) known as Deep Potential (DP) models. This package, which was released in 2017, has been widely used in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and material science for studying atomistic systems. The current version of DeePMD-kit offers numerous advanced features such as DeepPot-SE, attention-based and hybrid descriptors, the ability to fit tensile properties, type embedding, model deviation, Deep Potential - Range Correction (DPRc), Deep Potential Long Range (DPLR), GPU support for customized operators, model compression, non-von Neumann molecular dynamics (NVNMD), and improved usability, including documentation, compiled binary packages, graphical user interfaces (GUI), and application programming interfaces (API). This article presents an overview of the current major version of the DeePMD-kit package, highlighting its features and technical details. The observation of a 266.94 GHz feature in the Venus spectrum has been attributed to PH3 in the Venus clouds, suggesting unexpected geological, chemical or even biological processes. Since both PH3 and SO2 are spectrally active near 266.94 GHz, the contribution to this line from SO2 must be determined before it can be attributed, in whole or part, to PH3. An undetected SO2 reference line, interpreted as an unexpectedly low SO2 abundance, suggested that the 266.94 GHz feature could be attributed primarily to PH3. However, the low SO2 and the inference that PH3 was in the cloud deck posed an apparent contradiction. Here we use a radiative transfer model to analyze the PH3 discovery, and explore the detectability of different vertical distributions of PH3 and SO2. We find that the 266.94 GHz line does not originate in the clouds, but above 80 km in the Venus mesosphere. This level of line formation is inconsistent with chemical modeling that assumes generation of PH3 in the Venus clouds. Given the extremely short chemical lifetime of PH3 in the Venus mesosphere, an implausibly high source flux would be needed to maintain the observed value of 20±10 ppb. We find that typical Venus SO2 vertical distributions and abundances fit the JCMT 266.94 GHz feature, and the resulting SO2 reference line at 267.54 GHz would have remained undetectable in the ALMA data due to line dilution. We conclude that nominal mesospheric SO2 is a more plausible explanation for the JCMT and ALMA data than PH3 © 2021, CC BY.

Currently, the growth of information and technology is rapid. It makes a lot of things in various fields including education becoming more effective and efficient. In education, one of its implementation which is a game is proven to be a useful tool to support conventional teaching methods and bring a more natural understanding of learning materials. Moreover, as a product of the popular culture in modern society, video game mirrors the general culture practice in real life and reflects it via its own culture inside the game. This makes a video game can give a contribution to the social construction of reality as it affects the player's view towards learning in real life and vice versa. From there, we see that there is an opportunity for learning about religion to be supported by its utilization to provide an interactive and fun learning experience. In this paper, we discuss how a video game is implemented to support religious learning. The game was developed with the scrum method where we surveyed to gather the user requirements before the design step. The game design was made by using the use case diagram and storyboard, and it was built using Unity version 2017.3.0f3.
