Model-Driven Software Product Line (MD-SPL) is the combination of Model-Driven Software Development and Software Product Line. In this paradigm, there are complex dependency relationships between different software development artefacts. These artefacts have to be changed during development and maintenance activities. However, the quantity of elements involved and the complex dependencies may imply that not all artefacts are updated appropriately, making these artefacts inconsistent with each other and with variability rules. This article discusses the change impact on interrelated MD-SPL artefacts and what has to be done do keep consistency. Copyright © 2011 ACM.

Robustness or fault-tolerance capability of a network is an important design parameter in both wired and wireless networks. Connectivity of a network is traditionally considered to be the primary metric for evaluation of its fault-tolerance capability. However, connectivity (G) (for random faults) or region-based connectivity R(G) (for spatially correlated or region-based faults, where the faults are confined to a region R) of a network G, does not provide any information about the network state, (i.e., whether the network is connected or not) once the number of faults exceeds (G) or R(G). If the number of faults exceeds (G) or R(G), one would like to know, (i) the number of connected components into which G decomposes, (ii) the size of the largest connected component, (iii) the size of the smallest connected component. In this paper, we introduce a set of new metrics that computes these values. We focus on one particular metric called region-based component decomposition number (RBCDN), that measures the number of connected components in which the network decomposes once all the nodes of a region fail. We study the computational complexity of finding RBCDN of a network. In addition, we study the problem of least cost design of a network with a target value of RBCDN. We show that the optimal design problem is NP-complete and present an approximation algorithm with a performance bound of O(log K + 4log n), where n denotes the number of nodes in the graph and K denotes a target value of RBCDN. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm by comparing it with the performance of the optimal solution. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm produces near optimal solution in a fraction of time needed to find an optimal solution. © 2011 IEEE.

Model-Driven Software Product Line engineering (MD-SPLE) is the combination of Model-Driven Software Development and Software Product Line engineering. In this paradigm, there is a strong dependency relationship between meta-models, models, transformation specifications and traceability links. Moreover, there are also dependency relationships between core assets and product specific artifacts, which raise dependency complexity. Due to the pressure to release new product versions and the quantity of dependent elements, there is a probability that models and related artifacts are not updated at all and become inconsistent with each other. The proposal of this thesis is to keep MD-SPLE models, meta-models, transformation specifications and traceability links consistent. Copyright © 2011 ACM.

Software Ecosystems (SECOs) have emerged as an approach to improve software reuse in industry considering relations among companies and stakeholders. Companies and organizations have opened up their platforms and artifacts to others, including partners and third-part developers around the world. This changes the traditional software industry because it requires mature research in software architecture, component-based software engineering and software product line in a market and business environment. In this sense, this paper presents an initial proposal for SECOs engineering in order to outline a set of steps that combines three different dimensions of SECOs and joins different perspectives in SECOs research literature through a survey. In this paper, the focus is on the first dimension, that is, architecture. A preliminary analysis done by the Brazilian Software Reuse Lab's SECOs at coppe/UFRJ points out that several concepts presented at IWSECO 2009 and IWSECO 2010 can be connected in a broader SE approach.

Cloud computing will play an essential role in smart power grid by providing a cost-efficient, scalable IT platform for the delivery and management of electricity. A key component in the cloud-based smart power grid is the intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), which monitor, control, and protect the power system, and collect data back into the cloud for analysis and management. To maintain proper and robust operations of the power system, the collected data must be time-stamped under a common time reference. This in turn demands that the clocks of the distributed IEDs be synchronized to the required precision. A viable approach is to equip some of the IEDs with the Global Positioning system (GPS) as the time references and use the communication links already existing between the IEDs to synchronize the clocks of those without GPS. The question is, given a set of such references nodes, how to decide whether the clocks of all the IEDs can be synchronized to the required precision. If not, how can one add fewest reference nodes to meet the requirements? This paper addresses these issues and proposes efficient algorithms to solve the problems. © 2011 IEEE.

Dynamism of day-to-day activities in organizations is inextricably linked and there is a variety of information, insight and reasoning being processed between people and systems, in carrying out a business process. We argue that flexibility in processes could be managed in real time, using context information collected in the work environment. This paper proposes a context management architecture approach that aims to improve and automate dynamic process adaptation. We explain how process adaptation may occur in real time and discuss a scenario for this proposal © 2011 IEEE.

The Ray Tracing rendering algorithm can produce high-fidelity images of 3-D scenes, including shadow effects, as well as reflections and transparencies. This is currently done at a processing speed of at most 30 frames per second. Therefore, actual implementations of the algorithm are not yet suitable for interactive real-time rendering, which is required in games and virtual reality based applications. Fortunately, the algorithm allows for massive parallelization of its computations. In this paper, we present a parallel architecture for ray tracing based on a uniform spatial subdivision of the scene and exploiting an embedded computation of ray-triangle intersections. This approach allows for a significant acceleration of intersection computations, as well as, a reduction of the total number of the required intersections checks. Furthermore, it allows for these checks to be performed in parallel and in advance for each ray. In this paper we discuss and analyze an ASIP-based implementation using FPGAs and a GPGPU-based parallel implementation of the proposed architecture. The performance of both implementations are reported and compared." © 2011 IEEE.

Organizations have been relying on collaboration for productivity improvement and knowledge sharing. The first step to foster collaboration in organizations is to make it explicit. With this aim, the Collaboration Maturity Model (CollabMM) was proposed and evaluated. The lessons learned during model applications in previous work pointed out the need to review both the model and its evaluation instruments. A literature review also showed some improvement opportunities. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop a roadmap to highlight the main opportunities of evolution in CollabMM. These opportunities will compose our research agenda in this topic and guide future work.

Effective exploitation of the application-specific parallel patterns and computation operations through their direct implementation in hardware is the base for construction of high-quality application-specific (re-) configurable application specific instruction set processors (ASIPs) and hardware accelerators for modern highly-demanding applications. Although it receives a lot of attention from the researchers and practitioners, a very important problem of hardware reuse in ASIP and accelerator synthesis is clearly underestimated and does not get enough attention in the published research. This paper is an effect of an industry and academic collaborative research. It analyses the problem of hardware sharing, shows its high practical relevance, as well as a big influence of hardware sharing on the major circuit and system parameters, and its importance for the multi-objective optimization and tradeoff exploitation. It also demonstrates that the state-of-the-art synthesis tools do not sufficiently address this problem and gives several guidelines related to enhancement of the hardware reuse. © 2011 IEEE.
