This work introduces a two-dimensional modal logic to represent agents' Concurrent Common Knowledge in distributed systems. Unlike Common Knowledge, Concurrent Common Knowledge is a kind of agreement reachable in asynchronous environments. The formalization of such type of knowledge is based on a model for asynchronous systems and on the definition of Concurrent Knowledge introduced before in paper [5]. As a proper semantics, we review our concept of closed sub-product of modal logics which is based on the product of modal logics. The key idea is to reason about Concurrent Knowledge under a two-dimensional approach, regarding asynchronous runs and consistent global states as dimensions. We present an axiomatic system for the logic and issue the corresponding soundness and completeness proofs. © 2005 Oxford University Press.

Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems offer a solution for broadband access and high data rate transmission of multimedia services with distinct Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements through a wireless medium. IEEE 802.16 Standard specifies the PHY and MAC layers for BWA systems. However, in spite of including the possibility for QoS support, the standard does not define how to schedule different types of traffic. This article propose a new MAC protocol for BWA systems that incorporates a traffic scheduling mechanism based on messages and/or stations priorities. An analytical model to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol is also developed and results obtained for the messages waiting times of different traffic classes are presented. © 2005 IEEE.

As software evolves, analysis and design models should be modified, correspondingly. In this scenario, one of the main problems is to detect which elements should be changed due to a given change. This paper presents an approach that applies data mining over a versioned UML repository in order to detect change patterns among model elements at different abstraction levels. These patterns are presented to the software engineer together with contextual information obtained from a change control system, so he can decide the software evolution task at hand. © 2005 IEEE.

Many components are usually created within a Domain engineering (DE) process. These components may exchange a great number of messages among them, and many times this interaction occurs within a specific group of components. The more messages the components exchange, the more complex the domain architecture becomes, thus compromising its understandability, maintainability and ultimately its reusability. This paper presents some elements of a components grouping technique that aims to identify and propose solutions to components coupling problems. This technique is being proposed within a domain engineering process called CBD-Arch-DE focused on component-based architectural design. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents an analysis of the applicability of Sparse Kernel Principal Component Analysis (SKPCA) for feature extraction in speech recognition, as well as, a proposed approach to make the SKPCA technique realizable for a large amount of training data, which is an usual context in speech recognition systems. Although the KPCA (Kernel Principal Component Analysis) has proved to be an efficient technique for being applied to speech recognition, it has the disadvantage of requiring training data reduction, when its amount is excessively large. The standard approach to perform this data reduction is to randomly choose frames from the original data set, which does not necessarily provide a good statistical representation of the original data set. In order to solve this problem a likelihood related re-estimation procedure was applied to the KPCA framework, thus creating the SKPCA. The experimental results show the efficiency of SKPCA technique with the proposed approach over the KPCA with the standard sparse solution using randomly chosen frames and the standard feature extraction techniques. © 2005 IEEE.

Many current version control systems use a simple data model that is barely sufficient to manipulate source-code. This simple data model is not sufficient to provide versioning capabilities for software modeling environments, which are strongly focused on analysis and architectural design artifacts. In this work, we introduce a flexible version control system for UML model elements. This version control system, named Odyssey-VCS, deals with the complex data model used by UML-based CASE tools. Moreover, it allows the configuration of both the unit of versioning and unit of comparison for each specific project, respecting the different needs of the diverse development scenarios. In recent years, there has been growing interest in Location Based Service (LBS). However, the existing LBS has some limitations in the management of dynamic location-dependent contents and interoperability between the different platforms and various domains. We have focused on how LBS applications obtain integrated, dynamic, and sensitive contents on the different domains. We approach the Semantic Web technologies to resolve these issues. In this paper, we design the architecture to combine the Semantic Web technologies with the LBS and implement the prototype to describe the Semantic LBS. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

With the increase in adoption of remote work groups and teams working in non-collocated environments, several opportunities for interaction have been lost. Contact with colleagues and discovery of opportunities, previously easy due to physical proximity, is made harder with distance. In this paper, we describe an agent-based framework to assist users in finding opportunities for interaction that may have been overlooked.
