Applications deployed in clouds are susceptible to performance degradation due to diverse underlying causes such as infrastructure faults. To maintain the expected availability of these applications, Machine Learning (ML) models can be used to predict the impending application performance degradations to take preventive measures. However, the prediction accuracy of these ML models, which is a key indicator of their performance, is influenced by several factors, including training data size, data sampling intervals, input window and prediction horizon. To optimize these data-related parameters, in this paper, we propose a surrogate-assisted multi-objective optimization algorithm with the objective to maximize prediction model accuracy while minimizing the resources consumed for data collection and storage. We evaluated the proposed algorithm through two use cases focusing on the prediction of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for a 5 G core network and a web application deployed in two Kubernetes-based cloud testbeds. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can achieve a normalized hypervolume of 99.5% relative to the optimal Pareto front and reduce search time for the optimal solution by 0.6 hours compared to other surrogates and by 3.58 hours compared to using no surrogates. © 2013 IEEE.

This work introduces a two-dimensional modal logic to represent agents' Concurrent Common Knowledge in distributed systems. Unlike Common Knowledge, Concurrent Common Knowledge is a kind of agreement reachable in asynchronous environments. The formalization of such type of knowledge is based on a model for asynchronous systems and on the definition of Concurrent Knowledge introduced before in paper [5]. As a proper semantics, we review our concept of closed sub-product of modal logics which is based on the product of modal logics. The key idea is to reason about Concurrent Knowledge under a two-dimensional approach, regarding asynchronous runs and consistent global states as dimensions. We present an axiomatic system for the logic and issue the corresponding soundness and completeness proofs. © 2005 Oxford University Press.

The Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology has been proposed to support different traffic classes with distinct quality of service (QoS) requirements in broadband metropolitan area networks. Therefore, as part of its specifications, such a system must properly address the combined requirements of wireless communications and multimedia applications. We propose in this paper an extension to the MAC protocol presented in [1, 2], by assigning variable priorities to the network stations sharing access to the communication channel. An analytical model to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol is also developed and results obtained for the messages waiting times at different stations are presented. In addition, simulation data are used to compare the results obtained from the analytical model presented previously. It is concluded that the proposed variable priority MAC protocol is able to improve channel utilization and provide throughput and queueing delay fairness among the stations in the network. © 2006 SBrT.

In this paper we present the architecture for the Personal Autonomic Desktop Manager, a self managing application designed to act on behalf of the user in several aspects: protection, healing, optimization and configuration. The overall goal of this research is to improve the correlation of the autonomic self* properties and doing so also enhance the overall self-management capacity of the desktop (autonomicity). We introduce the Circulatory Computing (CC) model, a self-managing system initiative based on the biological metaphor of the cardiovascular system, and use its concepts in the design and implementation of the architecture.

The test activities performed during the life cycle of the telecommunication service development ensure the service quality and stability so necessary to achieve the maximum availability and reliability. The paper presents authors' contribution to remote and distributed testing for mobile communications services based on cloud computing assets and paradigms. The access solutions to the test methods were implemented for the GSM and GSM-R (Global system for Mobile - Railways) related Intelligent Networks services. The scalability and flexibility of the architecture allows to the proposed solution to be used, for both the production and the educational environments, to access the resources located on the different sites for the tests purpose. The concept of the remote test solution and the practical examples based on the remote tests with real equipments are presented in this paper. © 2011 IEEE.

BPMN 2.0 is a widely used notation to model business process that has associated tools and techniques to facilitate process management, execution and monitoring. As a result using BPMN to model Software Development Process (SDP) can leverage on the BPMN's infrastructure to improve SDP quality. Nevertheless, when using BPMN to model Software Processes one can observe the lack of an important feature: means to represent process tailoring. This article introduces the BPMNt, a conservative extension to BPMN that aims at aggregating a tailoring representation mechanism as the one found at SPEM 2.0. BPMNt uses the extensibility classes already present in the BPMN meta-model. Our work also presents an example to illustrate the approach. © 2012 IEEE.

Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems offer a solution for broadband access and high data rate transmission of multimedia services with distinct Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements through a wireless medium. IEEE 802.16 Standard specifies the PHY and MAC layers for BWA systems. However, in spite of including the possibility for QoS support, the standard does not define how to schedule different types of traffic. This article propose a new MAC protocol for BWA systems that incorporates a traffic scheduling mechanism based on messages and/or stations priorities. An analytical model to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol is also developed and results obtained for the messages waiting times of different traffic classes are presented. © 2005 IEEE.

A major activity performed by the manager before starting a software project is tailoring its development process. Such activity requires information about the context under which the project will be executed, including organizational, project, and team characteristics. In addition, it also requires pondering many factors and evaluating all existing constraints. In this scenario, we claim that a balance between collaboration and discipline can be the drivers to tailor software development processes in order to meet project and organization needs. With the purpose of facilitating this balancing, it is possible to automate some of the steps to solve the problem, reducing the effort required to execute this task and improving the obtained process. Therefore, this work presents an optimization-based approach where the balancing in process tailoring is defined, modeled and briefly analyzed. This approach uses collaboration and discipline as utility functions to select the most appropriate process for a software development project, considering its current context. © 2010 IEEE.

The treatment of economic and social issues in Software engineering was pointed out as a challenge in the coming years. Organizations have opened up their platforms and assets to others, including partners and third-party developers around the world, generating software ecosystems (SECOs). SECOs research can contribute to minimize nontechnical barriers of software reuse in industry because it explores potential relations among companies and stakeholders. However, an inhibitor is the complexity in defining value for reusable assets. This paper presents an extension of the Brechó-EcoSys environment to support components negotiations in reuse repositories. The focus is on complementing the stakeholders' value proposition and realization, as well as incorporating a nontechnical mechanism in components repositories. © 2013 IEEE.

Business processes are dynamic and constantly evolving. Contextual elements that had not yet been identified and represented can arise and influence the execution of each process instance in diverse manners. In this scenario, the identification of these elements is considered of great importance. This paper proposes a formalism for context associated with business processes that intends to identify the situation of an activity in order to subsidize decisions to be taken within the execution of a process. © 2012 IEEE.
