In this paper, design principles and application of a thin and flexible intravascular top hat monopole probe with increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and improved longitudinal and radial coverage are described and compared with the conventional monopole probe. The top hat probe is constructed by removing a segment of the shield of a coaxial cable. A flexible thin copper foil in contact with the inner conductor of the cable is added to the end section of the cable. The copper foil acts as an antenna top hat load increasing the uniformity of the current distribution on the probe and establishes a uniform region of SNR distribution around the probe. Improvement of the SNR distribution of the top hat probe relative to the conventional monopole probe is evaluated using quantitative indices. Experimental results show that for the top hat probe, the ratio of the maximum image SNR to its relative standard deviation (SR) is 2.73 times higher than that of a conventional probe. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Measured disturbance estimation for model predictive controller

This paper presents the Model Predictive controller design process when an unknown input observer provides measured disturbance form unmeasured one. Instead of using an unmeasured disturbance dynamic implemented into the controller, the joint observer-controller uses the estimated measured exogenous disturbance signal. Furthermore the observer can send an alarm sign to the supervisor. The detection and isolation of the unmeasured disturbance is computed by the geometric based strategy called Fundamental Problem in Residual Generation. Better the estimation of the disturbance is, better the rejection of the controller. The measured disturbance could be anticipated. A numerical example explains the effectiveness of the estimation and the usage of the unmeasured disturbance detection. Copyright © 2006 SoftMotor Ltd.

There are problems controlling autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) because they are nonlinear and coupled and have external environmental disturbances acting on the vehicle. More difficulties arise when the vehicle tasks require precise positioning and control as in military missions. This paper presents an integrated guidance and control method for an AUV. The algorithm is based on an optimal control method called shrinking horizon model predictive control (SHMPC). Scenarios for reconnaissance and reacquisition in mine countermeasures missions are explored applying SHMPC. In addition, there are scenarios with obstacle avoidance. Simulations of this method show the control method is able to systematically handle disturbances and constraints to successfully maneuver through volatile areas

K-BALL is a general method for localization of anatomical phenomena of the same origin with natural discrepancies distributed over a reference space, e.g., human brain anatomical structures. In this paper, we focus on information analysis step (2nd step) of K-BALL during which landmarks extracted in its first step are evaluated. We provide a framework in which rules are automatically generated based on estimated and derived models. We show that the rules based on the derived models can improve the overall success rate of K-BALL. Each rule evaluates the extracted points by producing an intermediate confidence factor (ICNF). A total confidence factor is calculated using ICNF's to facilitate the acceptance or rejection of a set of points as landmarks of interest. Using the rules merely based on the estimated models, simulation study produced an overall success rate of 91.8%. Using the rules based on both of the estimated and derived models, this rate increased to 92.5%

In clinical problems, numerous factors are usually involved in a medical syndrome. New advances in medicine provide a broad range of diagnosis methods to cover all aspects of a disease. However, huge amounts of raw information may confuse clinicians and decrease decision accuracy. computerized knowledge extraction is an active area of research in medical informatics. This paper suggests a new medical data mining approach using an advanced swarm intelligence data mining algorithm. Considering medical knowledge discovery difficulties, this approach addresses common issues such as missing value management and interactive rule extraction. Here, surgery candidate selection in temporal lobe epilepsy is the main target application. However, the general idea can be applied to other medical knowledge discovery problems. Experimental results show noticeable performance improvement in the final rule-set quality while the method is flexible and fast.

The overload control system of anti-warship missiles is researched. The output-redefinition technique is used to eliminate the nonminimum phase characteristics of missile overload output. In order to improve the robustness of the control system in the whole control process, an adaptive global terminal sliding mode (TSM) control method is proposed to control the missile's modified output. With this method, the system states lie in the global TSM at the onset of the motion, hence the reaching phase is removed from the control system. The adaptive controller is applied to estimate the upper bound of the lumped uncertainty. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simulation example

Determining loadability margins to various security limits is of great importance for the secure operation of a power system. A novel approach is proposed in this paper for fast prediction of loadability margins with respect to small-signal stability based on neural networks. Small-signal stability boundaries are constructed by means of loading the power system until the stability limits are reached from a base operating point along various loading directions. Back-propagation neural networks (BPNN) for different contingencies are trained to approximate these stability boundaries. A search algorithm is then proposed to predict the loadability margins from any stable operating point along arbitrary loading directions through an iterative technique based on the trained BPNNs. The simulation results for the IEEE two-area benchmark system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for on-line prediction of loadability margins.

The paper presents the e-learning project and the work until now developed for extending the features of the Italian remote laboratory "G. Savastano" to the academic circles of East Europe, Western Balkan and Mediterranean area. In particular, in the framework of the project "Italian-Croatian remote laboratory distributed on geographic network", the Italian-Croatian collaboration is highlighted. The proposed approach follows EU efforts to implement internal lifelong learning program and influence educational systems of EU partners and neighbor Countries while helping them to overcome problems with their own educational systems and lack of resources. Developed experiments, included in the remote laboratory, give the possibility of achieving practical experience on several fields, while multilingual approach gives the access to such facility to the students coming from different countries. Moreover, the idea of interactively controlled transfer of knowledge and experience offers new opportunities to the remote experiments enabling them to be executed without supervising necessity

Breakthrough-quality scientific discoveries in the new millennium (such as those expected in computation biology and others), along with optimal engineering designs, have created a demand for High-End Computing (HEC) systems with sustained performance requirements at a petaflop scale and beyond. Despite the very pessimistic (if not negative) views on parallel computing systems that have prevailed in 1990s, there seems to be no other viable alternatives for such HEC systems. In this talk, we present a fresh look at the problems facing the design of petascale parallel computing systems. We review several fundamental issues that such HEC parallel computing systems must resolve. These issues include: execution models that support dynamic and adaptive multithreading, fine-grain synchronization, and global name-space and memory consistency. Related issues in parallel programming, dynamic compilation models, and system software design will also be discussed. Present solutions and future direction will be discussed based on (1) application demand (e.g. computation biology and others), (2) the recent trend as demonstrated by the HTMT, HPCS, and the Blue-Gene Cyclops (e.g. Cyclops-64) architectures, and (3) a historical perspective on influential models such as dataflow, along with concepts learned from these models.

The use of loosely coupled vision and its application for computational grids was discussed. A grid was based on standard, open, and general-purpose interfaces and protocols. The interfaces and protocols provide some level of quality of service, in terms of security, throughput, response time, or the coordinated use of different resource types. The results show that grid is not subject to centralized control.
