Hybrid heuristic and mathematical programming in oil pipelines networks: Use of immigrants

We solve the problem of petroleum products distribution through oil pipelines networks. This problem is modelled and solved using two techniques: A heuristic method like a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm and Mathematical Programming. In the multiobjective evolutionary algorithm, several objective functions are defined to express the goals of the solutions as well as the preferences among them. Some constraints are included as hard objective functions and some are evaluated through a repairing function to avoid infeasible solutions. In the Mathematical Programming approach the multiobjective optimization is solved using the Constraint Method in Mixed Integer Linear Programming. Some constraints of the mathematical model are nonlinear, so they are linearized. The results obtained with both methods for one concrete network are presented. They are compared with a hybrid solution, where we use the results obtained by Mathematical Programming as the seed of the evolutionary algorithm.

Different from most power systems, the requirement for reliability of the power system on board a spacecraft is much more stringent. However, the reliability of the spacecraft power system can not be solely realized by increasing system redundancies due to limitations on mass. A Ring-Bus topology has been proposed for this purpose. This paper provides an analysis to this special topology, study selected critical possible failure scenarios and propose methods to maximize the serviceability of the system. A spacecraft power system is distinguished from most other system as it orbits around the earth. The primary source of the system is solar energy. Batteries save energy for ellipse time. To maximize the serviceability, the solar energy should be utilized most efficiently and the batteries should be strategically discharged to meet not only immediate load but anticipated load in the future. At the same time, the system should minimize current flows among different ring buses. Multiple objective functions are proposed and implemented in this paper based on different system operating conditions. The main goal is to maximize the serviceability of the system. The optimization result can be utilized to design controllers for the PV sources, loads and batteries. The proposed methods are tested on a Ring-Bus system. The testing result shows that the system can correctly determine its optimum operating strategy and corresponding control actions. © 2005 ISAP.

Breakthrough-quality scientific discoveries in the new millennium (such as those expected in computation biology and others), along with optimal engineering designs, have created a demand for High-End Computing (HEC) systems with sustained performance requirements at a petaflop scale and beyond. Despite the very pessimistic (if not negative) views on parallel computing systems that have prevailed in 1990s, there seems to be no other viable alternatives for such HEC systems. In this talk, we present a fresh look at the problems facing the design of petascale parallel computing systems. We review several fundamental issues that such HEC parallel computing systems must resolve. These issues include: execution models that support dynamic and adaptive multithreading, fine-grain synchronization, and global name-space and memory consistency. Related issues in parallel programming, dynamic compilation models, and system software design will also be discussed. Present solutions and future direction will be discussed based on (1) application demand (e.g. computation biology and others), (2) the recent trend as demonstrated by the HTMT, HPCS, and the Blue-Gene Cyclops (e.g. Cyclops-64) architectures, and (3) a historical perspective on influential models such as dataflow, along with concepts learned from these models.

We present an analytical model of the dynamics of spatial harmonics of holographic grating profiles, taking into consideration record mechanisms (polymerization and components diffusion), absorption, interference pattern contrast and optional photopolymerization nonlinearity. On the basis of numerical simulation we compare the model presented with the non-local polymerization driven diffusion model. The results of fitting experimental data with the model results are also presented. © 2005 OSA/PEMD 2005.

In the work an analytical model of transmission holographic grating formation by light beams with non-uniform phase-amplitude profiles is presented. The model takes into consideration influence of light absorption of a photopolymer with dye-sensitizer and nonlinearity of photo-polymerization on the spatial profiles and diffraction properties of the chirped grating. The model of diffraction efficiency and selective properties of chirped gratings is also presented. The results of fitting experimental data and numerical ones are shown and discussed. © 2005 OSA/PEMD 2005.

This paper presents a new, practical, and realizable methodology and scheme for an optimal hybrid tracking control problem for continuous neutral time-delay system. A continuous-time linear quadratic cost function that has a high-gain property is used for tracking control specification. Two interpolation formulas together with an extended state vector are applied to directly convert the original analog optimal tracking problem into an equivalent digital optimal regulator problem. Then, using the discrete-time optimal control theory and an indirect digital redesign technique with a predictive feature, an effective low-gain digital tracker, without losing the pre-specified high-quality performance in the continuous domain, is designed for the original analog neutral time-delay system.

Preventative diagnosis and maintenance of transformers has become more popular in recent times in order to improve the reliability of electric power systems. A number of transformers have recently been tested using Return Voltage (RV) and Dielectric Dissipation Factor (tanδ) measurements in the time and frequency domain, respectively. This paper outlines a circuit model which describes the dielectric behaviour of the transformer insulation system and has been parameterised from the frequency domain data. This model was then used to simulate RV and Polarisation-Depolarisation current (PDC) results. Some recommendations about the diagnosis of the transformers have been proposed. © Institution of Engineers.

Design of analog baseband filtering topology for application in multiple standard wireless systems has been evaluated. Two versions of GSM channel filter implemented as finite impulse response (FIR) discrete time filter in switched capacitor (SC) technique are presented. The GSM baseband channel filters have been realized in CMOS 0.8/spl mu/m and subsequently re-designed in 0.35/spl mu/m process for GSM/WCDMA application.

The paper offers the possibility of the design of unknown input detection for dynamic systems under external noise effect. The presented geometric based fundamental problem in residual generation (FPRG) method uses on the one hand the Kalman filtering and on the other hand the moving horizon estimation (MHE) when stochastic noise on the input and on the output, with additive failure directions, are presents. The paper combines the optimal Kalman and MHE method with geometric based unknown input observer strategy. The MHE solution makes to treat constraints during the estimation process possible. A numerical example supports the necessity of constrained unknown input estimation
