Range verification of therapeutic proton beam is crucial in proton therapy to confirm the irradiation field for ensuring effects and safety of the treatment. The irradiation field reconstruction using prompt gamma-rays generated from excited nuclides by proton beam has being studied for the purpose of precision medicine. A simulation tool based on fundamental physics processes employs an important role to understand intermediate relationship between physics interactions and detected observables, and to optimize a detector system with its analysis method. Previously, we reported on the simulation study about an irradiation field reconstruction by using prompt gamma-rays of whole energy range. In this study, we analyzed the energy spectrum and reconstructed the image of irradiation field by using prompt gamma-rays corresponding to a particular energy peak. The simulation was performed for proton beam with a target placed at the isocenter by using Geant4 based particle therapy system simulation framework. A simple tubular detector was placed around the target, in which the kinetic energy and the detected position of each gamma-ray were recorded. The irradiation field was then reconstructed in the ordered subset expectation maximization method. The reconstructed irradiation fields were compared with the dose distribution in the target. The peak positions of these depth distributions were compared each other and discussed about the range verification of therapeutic proton beam.

Molecular dynamics is an extensively utilized computational tool for solids, liquids and molecules simulation. Currently, much research on molecular dynamics simulation focuses on simplifying forces or parallelizing tasks to reduce the overheads of forces computation. However, the molecular dynamics simulation still remains challenging since the communication and neighbor list construction are time-consuming in the existing algorithm. In this paper, we propose a swMD optimization strategy including a new communication mode called ghost communication to reduce superfluous communication overheads and an innovative neighbor list algorithm to improve the construction efficiency of it. Moreover, we accelerate computation by utilizing many-core resources on Sunway Taihulight and present an auto-tuning Producer-Consumer pairing algorithm to make neighbor list construction happen in fast register communication. Compared to traditional methods, swMD optimization strategy obtains a maximal 82.2% and an average of 79.4% performance improvement. We also evaluate the scalability up to 266,240 cores and the results demonstrate the high efficiency of swMD optimization strategy on communication, computation and neighbor list construction respectively.

This paper presents a tightly-coupled multi-sensor fusion algorithm termed LiDAR-inertial-camera fusion (LIC-Fusion), which efficiently fuses IMU measurements, sparse visual features, and extracted LiDAR points. In particular, the proposed LIC-Fusion performs online spatial and temporal sensor calibration between all three asynchronous sensors, in order to compensate for possible calibration variations. The key contribution is the optimal (up to linearization errors) multi-modal sensor fusion of detected and tracked sparse edge/surf feature points from LiDAR scans within an efficient MSCKF-based framework, alongside sparse visual feature observations and IMU readings. We perform extensive experiments in both indoor and outdoor environments, showing that the proposed LIC-Fusion outperforms the state-of-the-art visual-inertial odometry (VIO) and LiDAR odometry methods in terms of estimation accuracy and robustness to aggressive motions. We propose an optimization model for designing multiple network functions virtualization (NFV)-based campus area networks (CANs). Organizations, such as universities and research institutions have their own campus information and communication technology equipment, but many would like to move this equipment to NFV and cloud data centers for improving reliability and resiliency. However, NFV-based CAN is not affordable for them, because costs are higher with a cloud. One solution is for multiple organizations to procure NFV and cloud data center resources together. By doing so, their individual costs of using these resources will be reduced. To make progress on this approach, there are planning issues to resolve when choosing optimal NFV and cloud data center locations. The proposed model minimizes the total network costs incurred by the organizations, including the wide area network cost and data synchronization costs for recovery from faults at data centers and the various subcampus network configurations of legacy CANs. The model is formulated and analyzed by using mixed integer linear programming. The effect of cost minimization is evaluated in a ladder network and an actual network, SINET5, and it is found that the costs can be reduced by up to 63%. The calculation times of this model under practical conditions are short and the model will be useful in practice. It is also shown that the cost of fault recovery can be suppressed. These results will encourage organizations to deploy NFV-based CANs. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

In modern era, one of the rising power quality (PQ) concern is harmonics distortion (HD). The HD is usually produced by increase in the utilization of nonlinear user loads at domestic level. It not only spoils the PQ but also have harmful effects on electrical appliances. So, this paper presents a new approach to mitigate the HD in home appliances rapidly by utilizing the active band pass filter (ABPF). The fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique is employed for the detection of harmonics in appliances. The band pass filter dramatically affects the response time of active filter. The suggested control methodology is capable to eliminate harmonics from distorted input voltage waveform and provides a pure sinusoidal waveform. The prototype of this model is also implemented. Experimental results along with simulation show that the proposed model is quite effective in eliminating HD despite load variations and also useful to compensate the reactive power in electronic home appliances. Hence, this technique is cost effective for domestic users with high quality performance in all aspects.

In this paper, the problem of enhancing the virtual reality (VR) experience for wireless users is investigated by minimizing the occurrence of breaks in presence (BIPs) that can detach the users from their virtual world. To measure the BIPs for wireless VR users, a novel model that jointly considers the VR applications, transmission delay, VR video quality, and users' awareness of the virtual environment is proposed. In the developed model, the base stations (BSs) transmit VR videos to the wireless VR users using directional transmission links so as to increase the data rate of VR users, thus, reducing the number of BIPs for each user. Therefore, the mobility and orientation of VR users must be considered when minimizing BIPs, since the body movements of a VR user may result in blockage of its wireless link. The BIP problem is formulated as an optimization problem which jointly considers the predictions of users' mobility patterns, orientations, and their BS association. To predict the orientation and mobility patterns of VR users, a distributed learning algorithm based on the machine learning framework of deep echo state networks (ESNs) is proposed. The proposed algorithm uses concept from federated learning to enable multiple BSs to locally train their deep ESNs using their collected data and cooperatively build a learning model to predict the entire users' mobility patterns and orientations. Using these predictions, the user association policy that minimizes BIPs is derived. Simulation results demonstrate that the developed algorithm reduces the users' BIPs by up to 16% and 26%, respectively, compared to centralized ESN and deep learning algorithms.

Capacitor banks are finding greater acceptability in application with the integration of many Ferro Silicon Industries in Bhutan; however, switching of capacitor banks is one of the most challenging operations because many inherent characteristics are accompanied with these events that needs to be studied carefully. This paper presents the switching transients of multi-step 3-phase back-to-back capacitor bank of 66/11kV Bhutan Silicon Metal Private Limited. Simulation were carried out to observe the magnitude of peak inrush current, frequency of transient oscillation and peak oscillating voltage during energizing/de-energizing of capacitor banks. The result shows that the magnitude is very high without current limiting reactor but with current limiting reactor the magnitude is reduced to a permissible limit thereby mechanical stresses to the nearby electrical equipment is reduced. Capacitor bank with grounded system is recommended because the transient recovery voltage and the rate of rise of recovery voltage across circuit breaker contact are less than the standard value of 2S kV and the limit of equipment capability 28 kV/75 μs = 0.37 kV/μs as per ANSI C37.06-2000.

As physical obstacles, vehicles have significant impacts on the efficient propagations of safety-related information in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) by frequently obstructing the LOS links between transmitters and receivers. Obstructing effect will diminish the effective coverage of safety-related information and incur severe impact on road safety. However, this impact has not been addressed effectively. In this paper, we first present the definition of broadcast efficiency as the metric for quantizing the obstructing effect. We investigate the optimization issue for mitigating the impact of obstructing effect on the propagation of safety-related information and propose a graph theory-based optimization algorithm. For a distributed implementation of this optimization in VANETs, we further propose the maximum broadcast efficiency relaying (MBER) algorithm. MBER maximizes the effective coverage of information, meanwhile, meets delay and reliability constraints by incorporating broadcast efficiency and propagation distance in relay contention. Simulation results demonstrate that MBER promotes the effective coverage of safety-related information in VANETs with varying vehicular distribution. © 1967-2012 IEEE.
