This paper investigates the problem of designing a nonlinear state feedback controller for a class of uncertain polynomial discrete-time systems using rational Lyapunov functions. The uncertainty that under consideration is modelled as a norm-bounded uncertainty. In general, the problem of designing a controller for polynomial discrete-time systems cannot be formulated as a convex problem. This is due to the fact that the Lyapunov function and the control input is not jointly convex, hence it cannot be solved by a semi definite programming (SDP). In this paper, we propose a novel approach where an integrator is introduced to convexify the nonconvex controller design problem, so that it can be solved easily by SDP. Furthermore, based on the sum of squares approach, sufficient conditions for the existence of a rational polynomial state feedback controller for a polynomial discrete-time systems are given in terms of solvability of polynomial matrix inequalities. These inequalities are then solved by the recently developed sum of squares (SOS) solvers. Finally, numerical example is provided to demonstrate the validity of this integrator approach. © 2012 IFAC.

A method for detecting spikes and slow burst in photic evoked electroencephalogram (EEG) was proposed. The spikes were detected by combining methods of the morphological filter and the similarity coefficient in the time domain. The slow burst was detected by using pole of AR model (auto-regressive model) in the frequency domain. The proposed method was applied for the photic evoked EEG data containing spikes and slow burst, and brought satisfactory coincidence with the results interpreted by a qualified electroencephalographer. © 2012 IEEE.

The recent evolution of many-core architectures has resulted in chips where the number of processor elements (PEs) are in the hundreds and continue to increase every day. In addition, many-core processors are more and more frequently characterized by the diversity of their resources and the way the sharing of those resources is arbitrated. On such machines, task scheduling is of paramount importance to orchestrate a satisfactory distribution of tasks with an efficient utilization of resources, especially when fine-grain parallelism is desired or required. In the past, the primary focus of scheduling techniques has been on achieving load balancing and reducing overhead with the aim to increase total performance. This focus has resulted in a scheduling paradigm where Static Scheduling (SS) is preferred to Dynamic Scheduling (DS) for highly regular and embarrassingly parallel applications running on homogeneous architectures. We have revisited the task scheduling problem for these types of applications under the scenario imposed by many-core architectures to investigate whether or not there exists scenarios where DS is better than SS. Our main contribution is the idea that, for highly regular and embarrassingly parallel applications, DS is preferable to SS in some situations commonly found in many-core architectures. We present experimental evidence that shows how the performance of SS is degraded by the new environment on many-core chips. We analyze three reasons that contribute to the superiority of DS over SS on many-core architectures under the situations described: 1) A uniform mapping of work to processors without considering the granularity of tasks is not necessarily scalable under limited amounts of work. 2) The presence of shared resources (i.e. the crossbar switch) produces unexpected and stochastic variations on the duration of tasks that SS is unable to manage properly. 3) Hardware features, such as in-memory atomic operations, greatly contribute to decrea

The supervisory controllers used in manufacturing processes to establish nominal sequences of production steps can theoretically be synthesized based on the supervisory control theory (SCT). The fact, that in practice manual design procedures are preferred over the SCT, is (among other reasons) due to the fact that the models used in the SCT are of an abstract type rather than reflecting the signal flow within a discretely controlled process, and that sets of permissible behaviors are obtained rather than selected (optimal) behaviors within this set. This paper proposes a modeling and synthesis scheme for discrete control which aims at retaining the closed loop structure of the controlled process. An algebraic representation of the discrete event dynamics is chosen to enable the transfer of concepts from continuous control to the supervisory control task. In addition, the scheme considers that the plant to be controlled often comprises continuous quantities (from which events need to be extracted), and that larger manufacturing processes typically have a modular and hierarchical structure.

This article addresses the problem of drinking water distribution system (DWDS) security in the terms of water quality which in the era of terrorist threat is of high importance to the public. The contribution of this paper is the development of the so called security module to extend a multi-species water quality model. This gives an insight to the situation in DWDS not only under normal operational conditions but also in case of a malicious attack on water quality. Moreover the security inputs are formally introduced to the model structure. This module enables simulation of both bacterial and/or chemical water contamination in DWDS environment. Previously defined inputs are utilised in proposed experiments by an attacking agent to influence the DWDS quality. The purpose of model development is to enable water scientists and water authorities to simulate the contamination propagation pathways and mechanisms throughout the network without omitting the 'natural' water chemistry effects. A simple simulation example for the exemplary DWDS illustrates the model performance for two distinct contamination scenarios.

This paper presents the investigation on the performance of active suspension system in the electric vehicle (EV) conversion, controlled by the stability augmentation system algorithm [9] and a newly proposed SAS-Skyhook algorithm. The evaluations were done using a validated 7-degrees-freedom (7DOF) of vehicle's ride model. The mathematical modelling of the vehicle model is described. A worst case scenario of random road profiles was considered to evaluate the performance of the active suspension system. The method of subjecting the random road profiles input is also described. It was found that in general, the active suspension improved the EV conversion's ride comfort performance significantly, compared to the passive suspension system. In terms of the comparison between the active suspension system controlled by the SAS and SAS-Skyhook algorithms, the ride comfort performance provided by the SAS-Skyhook algorithm is the most significant. © 2012 SICE.

Neuromorphic engineers aim to mimic the precise and efficient mechanisms of the nervous system to process information using spikes from sensors to actuators. There are many available works that sense and process information in a spike-based way. But there are still several gaps in the actuation and motor control field in a spike-based way. Spike-based Proportional-Integrative-Derivative controllers (PID) are present in the literature. On the other hand, neuro-inspired control models as VITE (Vector Integration To End point) and FLETE (Factorization of muscle Length and muscle Tension) are also present in the literature. This paper presents another step toward the spike implementation of those neuro-inspired models. We present a spike-based ramp multiplier. VITE algorithm generates the way to achieve a final position targeted by a mobile robotic arm. The block presented is used as a gate for the way involved and it also puts the incoming movement on speed with a variable slope profile. Only spikes for information representation were used and the process is in real time. The software simulation based on Simulink and Xilinx system Generator shows the accurate adjust to the traditional processing for short time periods and the hardware tests confirm and extend the previous simulated results for any time. We have implemented the spikes generator, the ramp multiplier and the low pass filter into the Virtex-5 FPGA and connected this with an USB-AER (Address Event Representation) board to monitor the spikes.

This paper aims to present the design of a cloud computing-based equipment monitoring system (EMS), called CCEMS, for the CNC machine tool industry to illustrate the paradigm shift of EMSs from basing on the Internet to basing on the cloud. In the CCEMS, Graphical User Interface (GUI) plays an important role that allows users to interact with the system for controlling and operating equipment, monitoring equipment performance and statuses, detecting and diagnosing equipment faults, conjecturing production quality and precision of equipment, and so on. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional Web GUIs, this paper proposes a novel Web application implementation framework, called NWAIF, for the CCEMS, by using Service-Oriented architecture (SOA) and Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology. Finally, a paradigm CCEMS for monitoring CNC machine tools is constructed and used to validate the efficacy of the CCEMS and NWAIF. Testing results show that the paradigm CCEMS meets the desired functional requirements and the GUIs created by using the proposed NWAIF is superior to traditional Web-based GUIs in terms of shorter response times to complete the testing operations. © 2012 IEEE.

Research has shown that environment lighting influences the behavior of the employees in an office setting highly, making lighting configuration in an office space crucial. A breakout area may be used by the employees for various activities that need to be supported by different lighting conditions, e.g. informal meetings or personal retreat. The desired lighting conditions depend on user preferences and other contextual data observable in the environment. In this paper, we introduce a new method for building prediction models to provide intelligent lighting in our pilot breakout area. Based on a set of pre-defined features that are expected to have influence on the users' choice in selecting a desired lighting environment, we introduce a probabilistic model for generating synthetic data. We also discuss and compare the performances of various rule-based classification models on the synthetic data and find `DecisionTable' to be the most suitable model for our pilot implementation. We study the influence of the training set size (number of samples) on various classification models and the influences of individual features through simulations. We present empirical results based on the synthetic dataset and a roadmap for future research.
