ISS (Instruction Set Simulator) plays an important role in pre-silicon software development for ASIP. However, the speed of traditional simulation is too slow to effectively support full-scale software development. In this paper, we propose a hybrid simulation framework which further improves the previous simulation methods by aggressively utilizing the host machine resources. The utilization is achieved by categorizing instructions of ASIP application into two types, namely custom and basic instructions, via binary instrumentation. Then in a way of hybrid simulation, only custom instructions are simulated on the ISS and basic instructions are executed fast and natively on the host machine. We implement this framework for an industrial ASIP to validate our approach. Experimental results show that when the implemented ISS, namely GS-Sim, is applied to practical multimedia decoders, an average simulation speed up to 1058.5MIPS can be achieved, which is 34.7 times of the state-of-art dynamic binary translation simulator and is the fastest to the best of our knowledge. © 2011 IEEE.

Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are widely used in reliability-critical systems due to their reconfiguration ability. However, with the shrinking device feature size and increasing die area, nowadays FPGAs can be deeply affected by the errors induced by electromigration and radiation. To improve the reliability of FPGA-based reconfigurable systems, a permanent fault recovery approach using a domain partition model is proposed in this paper. In the proposed approach, the fault-tolerant FPGA recovery from faults is realized by reloading a proper configuration from a pool of multiple alternative configurations with overlaps. The overlaps are presented as a set of vectors in the domain partition model. To enhance the reliability, a technical procedure is also presented in which the set of vectors are heuristically filtered so that the corresponding small overlaps can be merged into big ones. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach through applying it to several benchmark circuits. Buildings worldwide account for nearly 40% of global energy consumption. The biggest energy consumer in buildings is the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. HVAC also ranks top in terms of number of complaints by tenants. Maintaining HVAC systems in good conditions through early fault detection is thus a critical issue. The problem, however, is difficult since HVAC systems are large in scale, consisting of many coupling subsystems, building and equipment dependent, and operating under uncertain conditions. In this paper, a model-based and data-driven method is presented for robust system-level fault detection with potential for large-scale implementation. It is a synergistic integration of (1) Statistical Process control (SPC) for measuring and analyzing variations;(2) Kalman filtering based on gray-box models to provide predictions and determine SPC control limits;and (3) system analysis for analyzing fault propagation. The method has been tested against a simulation model of a 420-meter-high building. It detects both sudden faults and gradual degradation, and differentiates faults within a subsystem or propagated from elsewhere. Furthermore, the method is simple and generic, and should have good replicability and scalability. © 2011 IEEE.

The User Model plays a significant role in many personalized applications. Separated user modeling results in the fragments of the user model being distributed on the Web, but user modeling in a Multi-Application Environment (MAE) is increasingly required to provide a more complete user model view and more value-added user information to all relevant applications. In this paper, a Linked Data-driven user modeling approach is proposed to create links among the user model fragments of the same user who registers in different applications and, from these, construct a virtually global user model. Through these links, user information in one application can be acquired by another. An extendible Core User Model (CUM) is presented and used to describe both the common properties and the domain-specific features of the user. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach are analyzed by comparison with other user modeling methods in MAEs. The proposed solution appears to be more feasible and to offer increased flexibility. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper considers optimized network topology design and distributed control for linear discrete-time systems consisting of subsystems interconnected through states, inputs, and a cost function. By using a distributed control law, which makes use of the communicated states of other subsystems, closed-loop performance is increased at the expense of communication costs. This raises the question of how to find a topology and associated distributed control law with optimal trade-off between communication costs and closed-loop performance. As an answer to this question, we propose an approach to simultaneous optimization of network topology and control law with respect to a cost function which combines a quadratic performance criterion with costs associated to the presence of communication links. The problem is formulated as mixed-integer semi-definite problem (MISDP) where the discrete optimization of the network topology subject to communication constraints and embedded subproblems for structured controller synthesis lead to an upper bound for the combined cost. An example is used to illustrate the method.

The electric power is indispensable for modern life. However, there is a problem of harmonic disturbance when the harmonic power runs into electronic devices. To overcome the problem and realize a stable supply of the electric power is an important issue. In this study, we have developed a voltage-current waveform telemetry system for the remote measurement of the harmonics in the power delivery lines. The system consists of sensors, preamplifiers, a single board computer, and power collectors. Improvements are made on all of these components except the sensors. The power collector is a coil that can be placed around the same power line that we measure. We have designed the power collector by a finite element method(FEM) so that it can provide enough electricity for the computer to work properly. Thus, no other power source such as a battery except the secondary rechargeable battery for the recovery is necessary at the measurement place. The preamplifier in the new system is a single-supply differential amplifier circuit, and the single board computer has an inexpensive SH-3 CPU. Through experiments, we have confirmed that the power collector can provide sufficient electricity and that the new system can successfully measure the waveforms and the harmonics in power delivery systems. © 2011 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper examines robust partially mode delay dependent H ∞ output feedback controller design for discrete-time systems with random communication delays. A finite state Markov chain with partially known transition probabilities is used to model random communication delays between sensors and controller. Based on Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, a novel methodology for designing a partially mode delay-dependent output feedback controller is proposed. Using cone complementarity linearization algorithm bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs) are solved to obtain the controller gains. We also show that the results for completely known transition probabilities and completely unknown transition probabilities can be derived as special cases of our result. The effectiveness of the proposed design methodology is demonstrated by a numerical example. To the best of authors' knowledge, the problem of designing an output feedback controller for a partially known transition probability has not been fully investigated. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.

Detection of gear cracks from vibration data is a difficult task. This paper investigates an alternative to the linear predictor residual fault detection based on the nonlinear adaptive control system concept of frequency estimators. The frequency estimator model takes advantage of the sinusoidal nature of vibration and adapts the system model during operation. The low-computational requirements, no-priori knowledge, sinusoidal-based prediction, and on-line model adaption makes this model ideal for on-line gear crack fault detection. Performance is evaluated through both synthetic and experimental data while comparing to the autoregressive linear predictor model.

In This paper describes the mathematical modeling, control algorithm, system design, hardware implementation and experimental test of a Manta-type Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (MUUV). The vehicle has one thruster for longitudinal propulsion, one rudder for heading angle control and two elevators for depth control. It is equipped with a pressure sensor for measuring water depth and Doppler Velocity Log for measuring position and angle. The vehicle is controlled by an onboard PC, which runs with the Windows XP operating system. The dynamic model of 6DOF is derived including hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on the vehicle, while the hydrodynamic coefficients related to the forces and moments are obtained from experiments or estimated numerically. We also utilized the values obtained from PMM (Planar Motion Mechanism) tests found in the previous publications for numerical simulations. Various controllers such as PID, Sliding mode, Fuzzy and H8 controllers are designed for depth and heading angle control in order to compare the performance of each controller based on simulation. A passive image steganalysis method is proposed to universally detect spatial-domain steganography schemes. It is shown to have better performance than universal steganalyzers known to be powerful in spatial domain, including the WFLogSv and the WAM methods. This level of accuracy is the result of improving the WFLogSv steganalyzer by considering a more comprehensive relationship between the singular values of each image block and the linear correlation of the rows and the columns. That is, instead of the closeness of the lower singular values to zero, the energy distribution of the singular values is investigated. An innovative measure is proposed for this investigation, which is inspired from arithmetic mean-geometric mean inequality. Experimental results confirm the supremacy of the proposed steganalysis scheme over its counterparts.
