SPC and Kalman filter-based fault detection and diagnosis for an air-cooled chiller

Buildings worldwide account for nearly 40%of global energy *** biggest energy consumer in buildings is the heating,ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC)*** HVAC systems,chillers account for a major portion of the energy *** chillers in good conditions through early fault detection and diagnosis is thus a critical *** this paper,the fault detection and diagnosis for an air-cooled chiller with air coming from outside in variable flow rates is *** problem is difficult since the air-cooled chiller is operating under major uncertainties including the cooling load,and the air temperature and flow rate.A potential method to overcome the difficulty caused by the uncertainties is to perform fault detection and diagnosis based on a gray-box model with parameters regarded as *** method is developed and verified by us in another paper for a water-cooled chiller with the uncertainty of cooling *** verification used a Kalman filter to predict parameters of a gray-box model and statistical process control(SPC)for measuring and analyzing their variations for fault detection and *** gray-box model in the method,however,requires that the air temperature and flow rate be nearly *** introducing two new parameters and deleting data points with low air flow rate,the requirement can be satisfied and the method can then be applicable for an air-cooled *** simulation results show that the method with the revised model and some data points dropped improved the fault detection and diagnosis(FDD)performance *** can detect both sudden and gradual air-cooled chiller capacity degradation and sensor faults as well as their recoveries.

ISS (Instruction Set Simulator) plays an important role in pre-silicon software development for ASIP. However, the speed of traditional simulation is too slow to effectively support full-scale software development. In this paper, we propose a hybrid simulation framework which further improves the previous simulation methods by aggressively utilizing the host machine resources. The utilization is achieved by categorizing instructions of ASIP application into two types, namely custom and basic instructions, via binary instrumentation. Then in a way of hybrid simulation, only custom instructions are simulated on the ISS and basic instructions are executed fast and natively on the host machine. We implement this framework for an industrial ASIP to validate our approach. Experimental results show that when the implemented ISS, namely GS-Sim, is applied to practical multimedia decoders, an average simulation speed up to 1058.5MIPS can be achieved, which is 34.7 times of the state-of-art dynamic binary translation simulator and is the fastest to the best of our knowledge.

In a traditional anti-windup design, the anti-windup mechanism is set to be activated as soon as the control signal saturates the actuator. A recent innovation of delaying the activation of the anti-windup mechanism, both static and dynamic, until the saturation reaches to a certain level of severity has led to a performance improvement of the resulting closed-loop system. More recently, it has been shown that significant further performance improvements can be obtained by activating a static anti-windup mechanism in anticipation of actuator saturation, in comparison with the delayed activation design. This paper demonstrates that anticipatory activation of a dynamic anti-windup mechanism would also lead to significant performance improvements over both the immediate and delayed activation schemes. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) produce a parasitic oscillating torque due to several reasons. This contribution cancels the oscillating torque with adaptive control algorithms. Therefore a mathematical model of the PMSM is necessary. A model with nonlinear dynamics and a Fourier approach for the ripples is used as a mathematical description. Through comparisons between measured data and simulated data it is shown that the model assumptions are valid. The adaptive algorithm is implemented as an add-on controller to the already existing control system which consists of a feedforward part and a basis controller. The challenge is that the closed loop system has a resonant frequency and the algorithm should have the same performance for all frequencies. Experimental results show the performance and convergence of the adaptive algorithm at constant and non constant velocity.

In this paper, we propose a method to predict the outcome of Bevacizumab therapy on Glioblastoma Multiform (GBM) tumors. The method uses diffusion anisotropy indices (DAI) and spatial information to predict the treatment response of each tumor voxel. These DAIs are Fractional Anisotropy, Mean Diffusivity, Relative Anisotropy, and Volume Ratio, extracted from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data before treatment. The spatial information is considered as the distance of each tumor voxel from the tumor center, extracted from pre-treatment post-contrast T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Images (pc-T1-MRI). DAIs and spatial information of each tumor voxel are considered as feature vector. DTI and pc-T1-MRI are gathered before and after the treatment of seven GBM patients. First, DAIs of all brain voxels and the distance of each tumor voxel from the tumor center are calculated. Second, the method registers pre-treatment DAI maps and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI to pre-treatment pc-T1-MRI. Next, the tumor is segmented using thresholding technique from pc-T1-MRI. Then, Gd-enhanced voxels of the pre- and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI are compared to label the feature vectors. Three classifiers were evaluated, including Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Artificial Neural Network. Classification results show a preference for K-Nearest Neighbor based on well-established performance measures. © 2011 IEEE.

A model predictive controller based on iterative learning control is proposed. This algorithm which combines real-time control with iterative learning control is developed to address the trajectory tracking for a class of repetitive system with non-repetitive disturbances. First, a generic model which describes the state transition of a time-varying linear repetitive system along batch indices as well as time indices is derived in a temporal state space form. Based on this model, predictive control algorithm that utilizes past data along with real-time measurements is devised. Then iterative learning control law is given. It is shown that, by using this algorithm, perfect tracking can be achieved as the number of iteration grows.

Modeling and predicting human behavior is indispensable when industrial robots interacting with human operators are to be manipulated safely and efficiently. One challenge is that human operators tend to follow different motion patterns, depending on their intention and the structure of the environment. This precludes the use of classical estimation techniques based on kinematic or dynamic models, especially for the purpose of long-term prediction. In this paper, we propose a method based on Hidden Markov Models to predict the region of the workspace that is possibly occupied by the human within a prediction horizon. In contrast to predictions in the form of single points such as most likely human positions as obtained from previous approaches, the regions obtained here may serve as safety constraints when the robot motion is planned or optimized. This way one avoids collisions with a probability not less than a predefined threshold. The practicability of our method is demonstrated by successfully and accurately predicting the motion of a human arm in two scenarios involving multiple motion patterns.

In building fire evacuation, good guidance can speed up egress process and occupants may be injured due to lack of information and guidance. There are many studies on building egress systems, which use relevant information (e.g., fire condition and its evolution) to calculate and provide guidance to occupants. However, information used to generate guidance may be uncertain, and it is difficult to provide the guidance under uncertainty. How to provide effective guidance to occupants under uncertainty and how to evaluate the confidence of the guidance are critical issues. To describe the confidence of the guidance, the concept of "confidence intervals" is used. By comparing "confidence intervals" with a threshold, acceptable guidance is provided. Testing examples show that the confidence of the guidance can be evaluated and unacceptable guidance can be differentiated with the use of confidence intervals. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper examines robust partially mode de lay dependent H ∞ output feedback controller design for discrete-time systems with random communication delays. A finite state Markov chain with partially known transition probabilities is used to model random communication delays between sensors and controller. Based on Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, a novel methodology for designing a partially mode delay-dependent output feedback controller is proposed. Using cone complementarity linearization algorithm bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs) are solved to obtain the controller gains. We also show that the results for completely known transition probabilities and completely unknown transition probabilities can be derived as special cases of our result. The effectiveness of the proposed design methodology is demonstrated by a numer ical example. To the best of authors' knowledge, the problem of designing an output feedback controller for a partially known transition probability has not been fully investigated.
