A Taguchi-sliding-based differential evolution algorithm (TSBDEA) is proposed in this study to solve the problem of optimally approximating linear systems. The TSBDEA is an approach of combining the differential evolution algorithm (DEA) with the Taguchi-sliding-level-method (TSLM). In the TSBDEA, the TSLM is to provide a new systematic crossover operation for breeding better offspring, and consequently enhances the DEA. By using the proposed TSBDEA, the optimal approximate rational model with/without a time delay for a system described by its rational or irrational transfer function is sought such that an error criterion is minimized. Numerical examples show that the presented TSBDEA gives an effective and robust way for obtaining optimal reduced-order models for stable/unstable and/or nonminimum-phase complex systems, and can get better results than the existing DEA-based method reported in the literature. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Abstract - The User Model plays a significant role in many personalized applications. Separated user modeling results in the fragments of the user model being distributed on the Web, but user modeling in a Multi-Application Environment (MAE) is increasingly required to provide a more complete user model view and more value-added user information to all relevant applications. In this paper, a Linked Data-driven user modeling approach is proposed to create links among the user model fragments of the same user who registers in different applications and, from these, construct a virtually global user model. Through these links, user information in one application can be acquired by another. An extendible Core User Model (CUM) is presented and used to describe both the common properties and the domain-specific features of the user. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach are analyzed by comparison with other user modeling methods in MAEs. The proposed solution appears to be more feasible and to offer increased flexibility.

In this paper, distributed containment control with group dispersion and cohesion behaviors are discussed for a group of Lagrange systems. Both the cases of constant leaders' generalized coordinate derivatives and time-varying leaders' generalized coordinate derivatives are considered. The proposed control algorithms are shown to obtain velocity matching, connectivity maintenance and collision avoidance. In addition, the sum of the steady-state distances between followers and the convex hull formed by the leaders is shown to be bounded and this bound is explicitly given.

In this paper, we compare registration results obtained using different diffusion maps extracted from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Fractional Anisotropy (FA) and Ellipsoidal Area Ratio (EAR) are two diffusion maps (indices) that may be used for image registration. First, we use FA maps to find deformation matrix and register diffusion weighted images. Then, we use EAR maps and finally we use both of FA and EAR maps to register diffusion weighted images. The difference between FA values before deformation and after registration using the FA alone or EAR alone has a median of 0.57 and using both of them has a median of 0.29. Therefore, the results of registration using both of the FA and EAR indices are superior to those obtained using only one of them alone.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a devastating disease. In this paper, we propose a novel method for scoring of air trapping in the lungs for detection and evaluation of COPD. The proposed method finds volumetric changes of the lungs from inspiration to expiration. To this end, trachea CT images at full inspiration and expiration are compared. For this comparison, the lungs parenchyma in the inspiration and expiration images are found and changes in the surface and volume of the lungs between inspiration and expiration are used to define quantitative measures (features). Using these features, the subjects are classified into two groups of normal class and COPD patients using a Bayesian classifier. In addition, t-tests are applied to evaluate discrimination powers of the features for this classification. The main advantage of the proposed method is its ability to estimate air trapping in the lungs from CT images without human intervention. The proposed method may assists radiologists in the detection of COPD as a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system. It may also assist them with the scoring of the disease (severity of air trapping in the lungs).

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of lung diseases that block airflow and cause a huge degree of human suffering. While there is no cure for COPD and the lung damage that results in this disease cannot be reversed, it is very important to diagnose it as early as possible. Additional to diagnosis, using a mathematical model to estimate severity of disease would be helpful for evaluation of treatment effects. This paper presents a new method for identifying COPD from three-dimensional (3-D) pulmonary X-ray CT images. The method has five main steps. First, corresponding positions of lungs in inspiration and expiration are found based on anatomical structures. Then, lung regions are segmented from the CT images by active contours. Next, the left and right lungs are separated using a sequence of morphological operations. Then, parenchyma variations in each lung are found as a relationship between inspiratory and expiratory states. Finally, a classifier is used to decide about the disease and its severity. A t-test is done to evaluate the results. Twelve patients with variable severity of COPD and twelve normal adults were included in this study. The proposed method may assist radiologists in the detection of COPD as a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system.

This paper develops a systematic procedure of designing global power system stabilizers (GPSSs) based on collocated control to enhance the damping during interarea oscillations. The availability of remote signals from phasor measurement units (PMUs) enables the wide-area control in large scale systems. The closed loop eigenvalues are excluded from a region of the complex plane by the collocated control algorithm guaranteeing that low frequency modes must be damped. The optimum locations for GPSSs were selected using controllability. The damping performance of a 16-machine, 68-bus study system reinforced with GPSSs is examined in the frequency and time domains. The simulation results show that the control scheme is able to damp out interarea oscillations following possible disturbances.

CUDA has become a very popular programming paradigm in parallel computing area. However, very little work has been done for characterizing CUDA kernels. In this work, we measure the thread level performance, collect the basic block level characteristics, and glean the instruction level properties for about 35 programs from CUDA SDK, Parboil, and Rodinia benchmark suites. In addition, we define basic block vectors, synchronization vectors and thread similarity matrix to capture the characteristics of CUDA programs efficiently. We find that CUDA programs have some unique characteristics at each level compared to sequential programs.

Reliable access to dynamics is one of the central challenges in humanoid robotics. In this paper we consider the problem of computing both internal and external wrenches in open multiple branches kinematic chains, which are not equipped with joint-level torque sensors, but on the contrary are provided with inertial and tactile sensing, and a set of six- axes Force/Torque Sensors (FTS) distributed within the chain. The proposed method is grounded on the Enhanced Oriented Graph, a graph-representation of the kinematic chain, enriched with the information coming from the different sensors. Under suitable conditions, a maximum of N+1 external wrenches can be estimated from N six-axes FTS. The graph is built dynamically, and internal and external wrenches are consequently updated. Theoretical results have been implemented in a software library (iDyn) released with an open-source license (GPL) as part of the iCub software project. The proposed method has been applied to 32 of the 53 DOF of the iCub humanoid robot.

In this paper, we propose a method to predict the outcome of Bevacizumab therapy on Glioblastoma Multiform (GBM) tumors. The method uses diffusion anisotropy indices (DAI) and spatial information to predict the treatment response of each tumor voxel. These DAIs are Fractional Anisotropy, Mean Diffusivity, Relative Anisotropy, and Volume Ratio, extracted from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data before treatment. The spatial information is considered as the distance of each tumor voxel from the tumor center, extracted from pre-treatment post-contrast T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Images (pc-T1-MRI). DAIs and spatial information of each tumor voxel are considered as feature vector. DTI and pc-T1-MRI are gathered before and after the treatment of seven GBM patients. First, DAIs of all brain voxels and the distance of each tumor voxel from the tumor center are calculated. Second, the method registers pre-treatment DAI maps and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI to pre-treatment pc-T1-MRI. Next, the tumor is segmented using thresholding technique from pc-T1-MRI. Then, Gd-enhanced voxels of the pre- and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI are compared to label the feature vectors. Three classifiers were evaluated, including Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Artificial Neural Network. Classification results show a preference for K-Nearest Neighbor based on well-established performance measures.
