This paper proposes a weight initialization strategy for a discrete-time recurrent neural network model. It is based on analyzing the recurrent network as a nonlinear system, and choosing its initial weights to put this system in the boundaries between different dynamics, i.e., its bifurcations. The relationship between the change in dynamics and training error evolution is studied. Two simple examples of the application of this strategy are shown: the identification of DC Induction motor and the detection of a physiological signal, a feature of a visual evoked potential brain signal. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009.

This study presents an adaptive neural fuzzy network (ANFN) controller based on a modified differential evolution (MODE) for solving control problems. The proposed ANFN controller adopts a functional link neural network as the consequent part of the fuzzy rules. Thus, the consequent part of the ANFN controller is a nonlinear combination of input variables. The proposed MODE learning algorithm adopts an evolutionary learning method to optimize the controller parameters. For design optimization, a new criterion is introduced. A hardware-in-the loop control technique is developed and applied to the designed ANFN controller using the MODE learning algorithm. The proposed ANFN controller with the MODE learning algorithm (ANFN-MODE) is used in two practical applications-the planetary-train-type inverted pendulum system and the magnetic levitation system. The experiment is developed in a real-time visual simulation environment. Experimental results of this study have demonstrated the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed ANFN-MODE controller. © 2009 IEEE.

While supersampling is an essential element for high quality rendering, high sampling rates, routinely employed in offline rendering, are still considered quite burdensome for real-time ray tracing. In this paper, we propose a selective and adaptive supersampling technique aimed at the development of a real-time ray tracer on today's many-core processors. For efficient utilization of very precious computing time, this technique explores both image-space and object-space attributes, which can be easily gathered during the ray tracing computation, minimizing rendering artifacts by cleverly distributing ray samples to rendering elements according to priorities that are selectively set by a user. Our implementation on the current GPU demonstrates that the presented algorithm makes high sampling rates as effective as 9 to 16 samples per pixel more affordable than before for real-time ray tracing. In this paper a new approach on digital controller design based on logic neural networks is presented. In the first part of the paper the logic neuron and its logic function are introduced. Based on this, there is written the general equation for a logic neural network, which allows the easy design of any digital controller directly from the truth table. This solution is validated through MatLab Simulink modeling and simulation and then is implemented in a VLSI chip using PALASM HDL language and also in a ladder diagram PLC device. This method has the advantages of simplicity and flexibility and represents an easy to design modern solution.

This paper presents an efficient immune symbiotic evolution learning (ISEL) algorithm for the compensatory neuro-fuzzy controller (CNFC). The proposed ISEL method includes three major components-initial population, subgroup symbiotic evolution, and immune system algorithm. First, the self-clustering algorithm that determines proper input space partitioning and finds the mean and variance of the Gaussian membership functions and number of rules is applied to the initial population. Second, the subgroup symbiotic evolution method that uses each subantibody represents a single fuzzy rule and the evolution of the rule itself. Third, the immune system algorithm uses the clonal selection principle, such that antibodies between others of high similar degree are canceled, and these antibodies, after processing, will have higher quality, accelerating the search, and increasing the global search capacity. Finally, the proposed CNFC with ISEL (CNFC-ISEL) method is adopted to solve several nonlinear control problems. The simulation results have shown that the proposed CNFC-ISEL can outperform other methods. © 2009 IEEE.

Based on evolutionary programming, a universal approach to examine the non-analytic solution robustness of an optimal allocation methodology for industrial boilers that is designed based on the second-order gradient method is proposed in this paper. The allocation algorithm is easy to implement without any specialized software and the precise robustness analysis considers the worst-case scenario when uncertainty factors are introduced into some of the boiler system parameters. © The author 2009. Optimal control for Deterministic Hybrid systems using Dynamic Programming

Dynamic programming provides a method to solve hybrid optimal control problems. This contribution extends existing numerical methods originally developed for purely continuous systems, to a class of hybrid systems with autonomous as well as controlled switching behavior. The hybrid dynamics is approximated by a locally consistent discrete Markov decision process. The original optimal control problem is then reformulated for the Markov decision process and solved by standard dynamic programming methods. The convergence of the discrete approximation to the original problem is ensured. The viability of the numerical scheme is illustrated by a two gear transmission system used previously in literature.

In this way, Easy Java Simulations becomes a powerful tool to easily and quickly create 3D realistic simulations.

Active yaw stabilization for passenger vehicles, following driver yaw rate commands with steer-by-wire and rear break force distribution, is discussed. The problem is solved via a decomposition of the vehicle equations of motion into a static, scheduled tyre characteristics map, and an affine Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) plant. control is provided via a cascade connection of scheduled inverse tyre characteristics and an LPV controller, handling both the nonlinear dynamics an the non-affine tyre characteristics. Excellent tracking results are demonstrated with a high fidelity simulation even in the presence of noise and uncertainty. © 2009 EUCA.

The train regulation problem is of particular importance among the scheduling problems found in mass transit systems, being characterized by trains running in urban regions taking passengers from one location to another. If the desired headway between trains, dwell-times in platforms and running times between platforms are determined and known a-priori, the steady state solution (timetable) can be calculated. However, real systems are subject to disturbances such as passengers preventing doors from closing, mechanical or electrical failures, etc., that can deviate the trains from the steady state. In this context, this work is concerned with the determination of a control law, i.e. a law for the determination of the arrival and departure times of each train on each platform in the system's cycles in order to reestablish and maintain the timetable (reference solution). The proposed control law is based on max-plus algebra concepts. The desired arrival and departure times of each train on each platform are calculated from the last occurrence instants of the system's events and from a set of matrices defined in max-plus algebra. © 2009 EUCA.
