The unsteady cavitating flow in a turbopump inducer has been analyzed using CFD simulation results. An accurate three-dimensional detached eddy simulation (DES) code which took into account the cavitating phenomena was used. The three-dimensional code is based on the numerical method for compressible flow using low Mach number flow approximation. The cavitation is modeled by the source/sink of vapor phase in the liquid flow. The code has been applied for cavitating flows in both a 2D cascade and a 3D inducer. The computational results showed similar unsteady behaviors to experimental measurements in terms of the direction in cavity propagations and tendency in cavity developments. Mechanism for the unsteady cavitating flow such as rotating cavitation is investigated by analyzing the numerical results. One model is proposed to describe the reason why the cavity appears to propagate in the forward direction.

The state of Wisconsin and state of Hawaii are the only states in the nation to have offered MentorNet membership to all public universities and technical colleges. This innovative partnership highlights a new model to launch MentorNet on college campuses. MentorNet, the E-Mentoring Network for Diversity in engineering and Science and an award-winning nonprofit e-mentoring organization, offers a proven effective means to connect students (protégés) in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors with professionals (mentors) in industry, government and higher education. Since mentoring is recognized as an important engagement strategy to encourage women and girls to pursue STEM education and careers, other states can benefit from the story of the Wisconsin and Hawaii collaboration. Hawaii's Maui Economic Development Board and Wisconsin's Milwaukee School of engineering have partnered under a Women in technology grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service. This grant is to encourage women and girls in rural areas to pursue STEM education and careers. Because students at the Hawaii and Wisconsin partner campuses were enthusiastic about their MentorNet experience, the Women in technology grant funded a two-year contract to waive membership fees for MentorNet for all four-year and two-year University of Wisconsin system and Wisconsin Technical College system campuses;30 institutions could potentially participate. One of the aims of this program was to encourage more technical/community colleges to partner with MentorNet, broadening the range of mentoring opportunities for the diverse population of students who attend such schools. To promote MentorNet participation in the Wisconsin systems, a collaborative team from Hawaii, Milwaukee School of engineering, MentorNet, the University of Wisconsin system, and the Wisconsin Technical College system held a one-day orientation training in August 2005. To ensure te ongoing safe operation of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-3 Orion life-support oxygen system, a system review was completed that included a failure modes and effects analysis combined with an oxygen hazards and fire risk analysis. Though the RAAF P-3 Orion oxygen system has been operational for many years, the results of these analyses clearly identified many deficiencies in the current system configuration, thus demonstrating the value of the formal analysis approach. Design, procedural, maintenance, and material issues were all identified and addressed in the course of this process. This paper provides a brief summary of the analyses performed, the results obtained, risk tables generated, and their use leading to the recommendations for changes incorporated onto RAAF P-3 Orion aircraft that resulted from this work. The application of computerised optimisation techniques to the design of low and net-zero energy buildings would provide building designers with a powerful design tool. This paper presents such a tool that is being developed that links TRNSYS energy simulation with an optimisation program based on genetic algorithms. This early design stage optimisation tool optimises 17 parameters including building width to length ratio, heating system type, solar thermal collector type and size, window sizes by orientation, and more, to find multiple design configurations that achieve a set energy consumption target.

This paper presents for the first time experimental results on the peristaltic PDMS pump with perfect dynamic valves for both gas and liquid. Micropump consists of the three peristaltic-type actuators and the micro channel connecting with chambers and the inlet/outlet port. Micropump is fabricated by SU8 mold process and the two-step curing process for the irreversible bonding of PDMS layers. The diameter and the thickness of the actuator diaphragm are 1 mm and 98 μm, respectively. The total size of micro pump is about 5 mm × 5.5 mm. The dynamic gas and liquid valve actions of the single actuator are observed to verify effect of the fluidic mass and viscosity of the working fluid. Perfect peristaltic motions and robust pumping actions of the micro pump are confirmed by the flowrate test of micropump with the air and the ink. ©2006 IEEE.

This paper presents studies of propagation characteristics in a suburban forest based on a measurement campaign at a frequency of 1.8 GHz. We investigated how tree density affected the fast fading characteristic depending on tree density and base station antenna height in a range of 3, 4, and 5 m above ground while the receiving antenna height was fixed at 1.8 m above ground. Three categories were studied: high density area, low density areas and grass area. Measurement of the receiver signal over 120 s intervals for a stationary mobile were used to obtain the distribution functions for the fading. We found that the distributions followed a Rician distribution, whose K-factor depended on tree density and transmitter height.

A new technique is proposed to simultaneously measure the size and three-component velocity of droplets, which is the extension of the interferometric laser imaging technique to the stereoscopic configuration. The optical compression concept is also utilized to avoid droplet image overlap for the application to the relatively dense region of sprays. The applicability of the technique is successfully demonstrated by using a practical aero-engine airblast fuel spray field. The results are compared with those by the phase Doppler anemometry to evaluate the performance. The results by the two techniques show good agreement. The influence of the air pressure drop through the nozzle is also studied by the present technique and the results are reasonable and consistent with those from literatures. Some important characteristics of the complicated counter-swirling airblast spray field is clearly revealed, taking advantage of the present technique, such as the droplet motions influenced by the air flow in the recirculation zone and in the attenuated circumferential counter-swirl shear-layer structure, not only by the mean velocity values, but also by the various correlations among droplet properties.
