The application of computerised optimisation techniques to the design of low and net-zero energy buildings would provide building designers with a powerful design tool. This paper presents such a tool that is being developed that links TRNSYS energy simulation with an optimisation program based on genetic algorithms. This early design stage optimisation tool optimises 17 parameters including building width to length ratio, heating system type, solar thermal collector type and size, window sizes by orientation, and more, to find multiple design configurations that achieve a set energy consumption target.

In the development of sustainable lithium-ion batteries, achieving the efficient and cost-effective recycling of all components, particularly spent graphite (SG) anodes, has become a critical requirement. While considerable efforts have been devoted to recovering and reusing SG materials under conventional conditions, limited attention has been given to recycling under extreme conditions. This review systematically elucidates the main failure mechanisms of graphite anodes, including lithium plating and dendrite formation, solid electrolyte interface film failure, structural degradation, and current collector corrosion, with a particular focus on low-temperature and fast-charging conditions. As a contribution toward optimizing resource utilization, this review comprehensively summarizes the industrial perspective on strategies for recycling SG anodes, which aim to produce high-purity regenerated graphite (RG) powders. We also analyze current methods for modifying RG, such as structural reconstruction and surface reconditioning, to bring added value to modified RG materials. A detailed examination of the technical challenges in SG recycling and RG upgrading is presented, offering guidance for the future development of graphite upcycling technologies. This review also provides valuable insights into achieving high efficiency, intelligence, and sustainability in graphite utilization.

Stroke is one of the cerebrovascular health disorders caused by a blockage of blood flow to the brain. Data from South East Asian Medical Information Center (SEAMIC) explain that the most significant stroke mortality occurred in Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, and Thailand. There are several methods for diagnosing stroke, one of which is an electroencephalograph (EEG). EEG is one of the more widely used BCI methods due to its lower price, portability, ease of use, and high temporal resolution than other methods. Most EEG require signals from various places on the scalp to achieve good performance. However, using a large number of channels can degrade signal performance in the EEG. Spatial selection can be used for channel selection in the EEG stroke signal which can then be useful for evaluation of stroke therapy. Therefore, this study will select the optimized channel using the spatial selection method to see which channels are relevant to the EEG stroke signal. Also, using the Power Spectral Density extraction feature and Extreme Learning Machine classification. The L2-norm energy calculation method gets better results than other methods. This method can also select the active channel relevant to the stroke EEG signal. The results show that the spatial selection method can increase accuracy by 15 percent and optimize the system with 37.5 percent channel reductions. © 2022 IEEE.

The realization of the mass use of renewable energy needs to be supported by various parties, including Indonesia, which is a country that has great potential in the use of renewable energy. The community, government, and private parties who become developers in this regard need to realize the main potential of regions in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the prediction results of renewable energy in Indonesia, especially the potential for solar and wind energy. The method used in this research is machine learning with a random forest algorithm. Random forest classification prediction modeling was carried out using R software. The data samples used were data on maximum temperature, minimum temperature, average temperature, average humidity, duration of sunshine, and average wind speed from 34 provinces in Indonesia. Based on the prediction results with random forest, the average accuracy of the random forest classification model ranges from 81-92%. So, it can be said that the model can provide reasonable predictions. Based on random forest predictions, the classification of the largest level of solar energy potential is in 3 main areas, namely the provinces of East N usa Tenggara, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara. While the areas with the greatest wind energy potential are in 3 provinces, namely Kep. Bangka Belitung, East Nusa Tenggara, and East Java. The province of East Nusa Tenggara has a high potential for solar and wind energy. The potential duration of solar radiation reaches 10.6 hours per day, while the average wind speed reaches 4 m/s per day. The results of this study are expected to be input for parties who play a role in developing renewable energy in Indonesia to support the renewable energy mix target of 23 % by 2025. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper proposes an executable system architecting paradigm for discrete event system modeling and analysis through integration of a set of architecting tools, executable modeling tools, analytical tools, and visualization tools. The essential step is translating SysML-based specifications into Colored Petri Nets (CPNs) which enables rigorous static and dynamic system analysis as well as formal verification of the behavior and functionality of the SysML-based design. A set of tools have been studied and integrated that enable a structured architecture design process. Some basic principles of executable system architecture for discrete event system modeling that guide the process of executable architecture specification and analysis are discussed. This paradigm is aimed at general system design. Its feasibility was demonstrated with a C4type network centric system as an example. The simulation results was used to check the overall integrity and internal consistency of the architecture models, refine the architecture design, and, finally, verify the behavior and functionality of the system being modeled. ©2008 IEEE.

This paper presents for the first time experimental results on the peristaltic PDMS pump with perfect dynamic valves for both gas and liquid. Micropump consists of the three peristaltic-type actuators and the micro channel connecting with chambers and the inlet/outlet port. Micropump is fabricated by SU8 mold process and the two-step curing process for the irreversible bonding of PDMS layers. The diameter and the thickness of the actuator diaphragm are 1 mm and 98 μm, respectively. The total size of micro pump is about 5 mm × 5.5 mm. The dynamic gas and liquid valve actions of the single actuator are observed to verify effect of the fluidic mass and viscosity of the working fluid. Perfect peristaltic motions and robust pumping actions of the micro pump are confirmed by the flowrate test of micropump with the air and the ink. ©2006 IEEE.

The stuffing box with pedestal (SBP) is a major component in centrifugal pumps (CPs). It is responsible for the transfer of load generated in the CP to the baseplate of the pump and finally to the ground. SBPs are usually fabricated using investment casting;however, this process is prone to residual casting defects, which can reduce mechanical strength and increase the likelihood of crack formation following long-term usage. In this study, the AnyCasting numerical simulation software package was used to optimize the investment parameters for the casting of an SBP in SUS304 alloy. Optimization efforts targeted the shrinkage cavity (based on retained melt modulus) and porosity defects (based on Niyama criterion). The results of preliminary simulations and experiments informed the establishment of five casting schemes for subsequent simulation. We used virtual thermo-dynamic sensors to determine the rate and direction of solidification in the mold cavity, and also investigated variations in the velocity of the molten metal at the inlets of the gating system as a function of time. The optimal casting parameters derived in simulations were assessed by fabricating an SBP via investment casting in a domestic foundry. Nondestructive testing based on X-ray analysis revealed none of the detrimental defects commonly associated with this type of casting. © 2020, Chinese Mechanical engineering Society. This paper decribes design, fabrication, and chracteristics of all PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) pneumatic balloon actuators for the bidirectional motion of the microfinger. The actuation mechanism of the balloon actuator is based on pressure-dependent swelling and saturation phenomena of two flexible diaphragms with different thicknesses. Two types of microfingers with balloon actuators are fabricated by the simple silicon molding process and pneumatically tested. From the pneumatic test result, it is confirmed that the out-of-plane motion of the microfinger depends on the thickness of the bottom diaphragm of pneumatic balloon actuators. When the applied pressure is 50 kPa, the generated force and the bending angle of Type A finger are 0.17 mN and 59°, respectively. © 2005 IEEE.

In this study, dopamine passivated carbon nanodots (C-dots) were fabricated to detect ferric ions (Fe3+) sensitivity and selectivity. Photoluminescence (PL) intensity of C-dots was turned on after adding phenyl boric acid. Depending on the interesting PL property, we investigated a novel strategy for Fe3+detection. Comparing to the previous papers used complicated and tedious process to fabricate nanomaterial-based probes for Fe3+ sensing, the one-pot hydrothermal method spend only 2 h to prepare C-dots from dopamine and trisodium citrate. The limit of detection (LOD) is 5.8 nM, which is lower than these papers.

This paper shows the possibility of the output improvement to a large wind turbine, so the operator can earn more and thus reduce the overall cost of energy. For a modern wind turbine certificated by IEC or DNV-GL guidelines, a 20 years design lifetime is a base line. However, the efficiency of the turbine will degrade after 8 or 9 years' operating. Some components, especially the turning blade, the efficiency may vary due to the surface condition change. Meanwhile, the controller technology may also have been improved after years. So, the turbine can regain its original output or even have a better output performance through some adjustments. In this paper, a 2 MW wind turbine with different design and operating parameters like blade efficiency, wind direction alignment, high/low wind control strategy has been evaluated, then with the software DNV-GL BLADED simulation, to calculate the output differences and availability of the turbine. The result shown that a 3~5% yield annually can be obtained for each improved parameter in a 9 m/s mean wind speed situation. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018.
